A federal judge in Arizona on Thursday temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s administration from immediately deporting dozens of Guatemalan and Honduran children who came to the U.S. alone. U.S. District Judge Rosemary Márquez in Tucson granted a preliminary injunction, citing concerns about the steps the government had taken to prepare to deport the children. “The foundation of Defendants’ argument for their authority to transport Plaintiffs out of the United States is that Defendants are reuniting Plaintiff Children with parents abroad, but counsel could not identify a single instance of coordination between a parent and any government—American or Guatemalan,” she wrote. The ruling extends the protection for the children living in shelters or foster care after Márquez issued a temporary restraining order over Labor Day weekend. The order was meant to keep the children from being removed until at least Sept. 26.

I do sort of wish western anime fans would analyze anime and manga from a framework of japanese historical and cultural context. Specifically a lot of works from the 90s being influenced by the general aimlessness and ennui that a lot of people were experiencing due to the burst in the bubble economy and the national trauma caused by the sarin terrorist attack. I think in interacting with media that’s not local to our sociocultural/sociopolitical sphere it’s easy to forget that it’s influenced and shaped by the same kinds of factors that influence media within our own cultural dome and there ends up being this baseline misalignment of perception between the causative elements of a narrative and viewer interpretation of those elements. It’s a form of death of the author that i think, in some measure, hinders our ability to fully understand/come to terms with creator intent and the full scope of a work’s merits
Tumblr tags of the month award goes to:
is the homophobic yaoi-loving straight woman fangirl in the room with us or is this another strawman for misogyny
like i have been in and adjacent to various fandom circles my entire adult life and have never met someone who omg loves fetishizing teh gay anime bois but doesn't think gay people deserve rights irl. i don't think this person exists. in fact i have met so few actually straight cis women in fandom at all that i can recall all of them i've ever known, and those have all been in...het shipping circumstances
to me this feels like another manifestation of the "omg so it's okay for WOMEN to victimize MEN??? imagine if a MAN did this to a WOMAN" knee-jerk reactionary discourse you see online all the time - like imagine if men constantly jerked off to gay women while also dehumanizing us and denying our participation in society and the legal and political system!!! oh wait that has literally been happening since the beginning of time, but it's only a problem when you make up a woman doing the same thing to men and then extrapolate that into a moral panic when what you're really talking about is a bunch of cis queer women, nonbinary people, and some trans men (though many gay trans men in fandom are often really bad at perpetuating this rhetoric too) who are basically just minding their business and doing the jerking off part, but not the dehumanization and human rights violation parts. inch resting innit
and if you’re going to go all in on “well the jerking off part is STILL BAD and THEY SHOULDN’T DO IT” as a counterargument then idc much what you have to say. you’re basically the catholic church at that point
Well that explains a lot.
You’re 28 years old and still drawing Pokémon on a dead website. Things are not going to get better
I’m a senior designer who got promoted to design lead recently. Last year I single handedly branded a campaign valued at 4 million euros. I’ve had my art displayed in one of Ireland’s biggest tourist attractions and have given talks about my art process and what it means to be a queer creative.
I think I’m still going to draw Pokémon for fun
discords new username update is literally just “what if we got rid of privacy & safety & the fun of name changes! cuz numbers are so hard :(” and it is making me physically violent
good advice.
I’ve read the notes and I still genuinely don’t understand the issue here.
We’ll still have perfectly customizable display names so we can put our pronouns and stuff. We’ll still be able to personalize a nickname for each server. We’ll still be able to change our usernames up to 2 times per hour, so it shouldn’t affect our ability to escape malicious stalkers. And there is no obligation to use the same username as on our social media.
None of these features will be locked behind a Nitro subscription.
I’m begging people to explain here. Is there a big issue that I’m completely blind to, or did nobody bother reading the FAQ?
the usernames now must be completely unique and are separate to display names; aka the same as most socmed systems right now. that’s annoying on its own because discord is not a socmed. it’s a messaging app. anyway this means even if you can change them whenever you want, you shouldn’t, because it opens up your name to being stolen. this also means url hoarding can be a thing on discord now. this also means that people who don’t like to change their name because they want it consistent across platforms can be forced to if they don’t want to be stalked for any reason— and then, should their new name be found; they will have to do that again, potentially eventually running out of any names they even like having. sure, we’ve all had to make names we didn’t like that much on social media before— but discord is not a social media, not to mention they literally had a perfectly good system before and are just deciding to change it.
this also means that anyone besides the FIRST person to have a common name now must change their name, regardless of how attached to it they were before. because it’s going off of seniority.
there’s also the fact that there was practically no good reason for this change. the statistics discord mentions in their announcement of the update are misleading at best and at worst completely untrue. i also struggle to understand the purpose of forcing 9999 people to chose an entirely new name just because that 10000th person wasn’t able to get it too. “only 9999 people can have this name, which seems unfair! so instead of adding a number to make it 99999 or something, we’re going to take away numbers, so now only 1 person can have it!” does not seem like a well thought out decision to me.
as i understand, it also means that only people with latin characters for names can make their usernames, and people without will have to change their names. i’m not going to even go into why that’s dumb.
in short, it’s going to be a huge hassle and inconvenience for many many people, and actually dangerous for other people. and even if it wasn’t, there really is zero good reason for this change besides the homogenization of the internet, which personally i am avidly against.
at least, this is my opinion. i hope it doesn’t come across as harsh.
in short, to use a mangled metaphorical: you know how we're getting bots with really good urls these days? and how those urls are gone forever, locked away from us because some botnet took it? discord is introducing a similar scarcity problem.
FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE MENTIONS THE PRIVACY THING!!! I love how no one can message me on discord without me personally giving them my 4 numbers even though I use the same username everywhere!! I don't want to loose that!
[ ID: Tags reading: #remember when a bunch of ppl unsubbed from nitro en masse bc of the nft shit and they backpedaled #unsub and make sure u tell them why if u have nitro /end ID. ]
this is literally how every messaging app has ever worked since the internet was a thing though. skype is associated with your email, AIM and MSN were associated with your email accounts, zoom is associated with an email account. whether or not it's a messaging app or social media is irrelevant.
the only other platform i can think of that uses discriminators is battlenet, and that's a gaming platform. i don't mind the discriminators, but I'm personally looking forward to the change, and as the faq says, you can still use the discriminators to be identified. if you don't want strangers to dm you, that's a security option within the app itself. i think more people are okay with this change than not tbh
Rise fans, here’s how to ACTUALLY get the show renewed:
Ok gang, looks like the creator of rottmnt has hinted that if we make enough noise, renewal can creep back onto the table. As someone who’s spent the better part of a year in the Our Flag Means Death fandom and have observed organized tactics that actually worked to draw attention and get it renewed, I have some advice.
Whenever you tag #rottmnt, tag or @ Nickelodeon as well. I cannot stress enough how important this is. When you don’t do this the chances of someone from the team actually seeing your post drops exponentially. When we were grinding to get ofmd season 2, a hugely important part of that success was the organized effort to call out to HBO Max directly.
Likewise, find out which social Media Nickelodeon networkers, producers, representative accounts, etc are actually active on. Post there. Again, it’ll increase the chances of the campaign actually being noticed for the scale that it is. Posting #saverottmnt on sites that Nickelodeon simply doesn’t frequent is not pointless, but it really only serves to drum up hype and tell fans possibly in the dark about the movement. But as I said before, our most important target is the Studio itself.
Try to also hashtag #saveRiseOfTheTeenageMutantNinja Turtles. It’s a lot to type I know, but the show’s acronym may not show up in whatever systems the studio uses to track the internet presence of their content.
Watch the show and movie on it’s official platforms like you need it to breath. Watch it as many times as you have the whim to, turn it in in the background while you do chores, show it to your friends and family members, ANYTHING to help cause a noticeable spike in viewership. It HAS to be official platforms too or it doesn’t count. Ratings are king.
This one’s a little more involved but if even just a a few dozen or a hundred people have the means, it can make big waves. Send in physical letters. Especially in our near completely digital age, a real stamped, hold in your hand letter is not going to be buried. It is way harder to ignore something that showed up at your door rather than something you need to either be looking for, or be in the right place to see. If you can, write to Nickelodeon about what the show means to you, make appeals directly to them about why the show deserves to be renewed, and also importantly, why it would be profitable to the company. Your main incentive to have a paramount plus prescription is the turtles? Let them know you’ll cancel it when you get bored watching the same two seasons over and over. This show had a huge impact on your life at a time you needed it most? Share that!
The bottom line: campaigns are only as successful as their volume and audience. Make sure you’re not only making the right kind of noise, but make sure you’re talking to exactly the people your message is for. Alright everyone,
LETS GET ROTTMNT BACK!
Y’all for real please don’t let this flop, I need them back 💀
Have a lil Bowser sketch! :>
i beg you.. stop only consuming kids media.. your life will be so much better
u can watch whatever you want dgmw but if you 34 and getting in discourse about the morals in bluey and making headcanons about cocomelon maybe it’s time to broaden ur interests
cold ass take. i’ve got enough adult shit to deal with irl, i don’t need it in my media. i have enough complex real life issues to think about in my professional life studying polsci. i watch cartoons for FUN, specifically to get away from all this shit.
I think if your reading comprehension is this shitty you shouldn’t be allowed to reblog posts
Enlighten me about the true meaning of this post. I think my reading comprehension is pretty darn good thank you very much
THEN WHAT’S THE POINT OF THE POST
Fun fact: We know the size of the Pokémon world because Scarlet and Violet has framerate issues
Video games tend to do this thing called "culling," where they don't render things that aren't in use. In Breath of the Wild, there's no reason for Link to be able to see how many apples are on a tree in Hateno when he's all the way in Tarrey Town, or know how many Bokoblins are running around Hebra Mountain. Link has a radius around himself that spawns in people, enemies, items, etc, so that the player gets the full experience of a rendered world without the game having to keep track of 850 Hearty Radishes sparkling.
This is good.
Scarlet and Violet has really AGGRESSIVE culling. The devs knew the game was framey and did everything they could up until the last possible second to save on resources.
The player has a single square that's always rendered around them, which takes about 10 seconds to run across. Besides that, all that's visible is whatever the camera is facing; if the camera can't see it, it does not exist.
You might think that this would be good for performance, since the game isn't calling as many assets constantly. And you would be right, if the things culled were ALL that the game was trying to render.
We all know at this point about the memory leak problem the game has, where it won't toss garbage data it's not using. This is supposed to account for the framerate drop; however, if it was ONLY the memory leak, it should start out smoothly, then decay over time until it's unplayable.
So what gives?
This is the ocean.
It's pretty. It's got a tiny bit of reflection, some gentle waves, a nice gradient. A beautifully made ocean without repetitive textures is always nice.
THIS IS THE OCEAN.
IT IS NOT CULLED.
Look at the SIZE of this thing! Paldea is an ANT in the middle of this puddle. It's rendering ALL of this, ALL its sparkles and waves, ALL the time.
Now, this is usually the part of the post where I'm like "and because we know the size of the ocean, based on the coastlines and wind direction, we can figure out how big the rest of the planet is by comparison!" like I did with Breath of the Wild over a year ago.
No.
Another video game term you might not be familiar with is a "skybox." Basically, to give the illusion of faraway objects, clouds, mountains, etc, and to hide the black void most 3D games are built in, games will have a texture wrapped around either the level or where the player is standing. For example:
This is a level from Twilight Princess called Sacred Grove. You normally can't see the bottom parts of this, hence why it turns into a gray plane, but the parts you CAN theoretically see by looking through the trees are colored so you think you're looking at a sky. You can see the edge of the void down in the bottom right corner.
Here's another one from Twilight Princess. You can see the different textures that stack on top of each other, as well as the blue skybox that's centered around Link when he's in the area. You, as the player, FEEL like you're in a small part of a larger world, because the devs cleverly structured together elements you CAN see in other areas into the background.
More complicated versions of skyboxes, typically semi-circular, are called skydomes.
They tend to look kind of like snowglobes, because you do not need to render anything that can't be seen. There's no situation in which the player should be able to fall lower than the level, so there's no reason to render the dome into a sphere in the event that that happens.
In Scarlet and Violet, it would make sense for the skydome to end where the ocean does. There's no situation in which the player manages to go past or underneath the ocean, so even if you wanted a gigantic ocean size like they have, you don't need to use more sky to encompass that.
They did not get this memo.
You might be thinking to yourself "wow, that looks like the curvature of the Earth!"
AND YOU WOULD BE RIGHT!!!!!
Why is this here. Why is it so big. I can't even see Paldea anymore. What exactly was planned for this.
Clever readers might have noticed that I labeled this "Skysphere" and not "Skydome."
That's because it for some reason is a sphere. Paldea is sitting in the middle of a fully rendered gigantic sphere in space. For some reason.
Look at Earth. Look at Spain, which Paldea is supposed to mimic.
I overlaid Spain over Paldea and made them roughly the same size. Assuming the two to be 1:1, the OCEAN is bigger than Earth.
If I then take that size and apply it to the skysphere:
HI. WHY IS THIS A THING.
The skysphere is bigger than the PROPORTION OF THE SUN TO THE EARTH:
I will be taking this as canon sizing until the Pokémon Company comes out and either CULLS this monstrosity and stops forcing our Switches to render THE SUN, or until the Pokémon Company comes out and gives us a canon planet size.
7.8/10 too much water
