just realized in about a week from now the thing i've been dreading since january, that has been making me throw up in the morning before work at least once a week from sheer anxiety and dread, will be over and i can tell my boss i'm literally never doing it again. i feel like this is not going to be a very good week anxiety-wise in the interim though

There's an awful trend in reading that's this CinemaSins kind of rejection of abstract concepts and suspension of disbelief, that makes people say it's bad writing when authors use descriptions that aren't immediately one to one with physical reality.

Like it's bad when a "tattoo is undulating" (as opposed to... "drawn in a wave like pattern on the skin"?), or when hair is "wet wheat from a late Summer field" (as opposed to "sort of brownish light yellow that dries lighter, but is not actual wheat stalks growing on someone's head but kind of reminiscent of the color and texture"?), or when when ice cream tastes like midnight at the fair" (as opposed to "ice cream flavour bringing back memories of undefined ice cream flavours that are individually popular but always tied to a memory of late evening at the fair ground and probably smelling vaguely like popcorn and sugar"?).

Please. We have to get back to understanding abstract descriptions that evoke feelings and memories and mental images or things we haven't experienced yet. This hyper utilitarian way of reading and judging text is killing fiction. it's robbing you of experiencing things you haven't actually personally experienced.

#and if i said this is a big contributor to why i think taylor swift has regressed as a lyricist in the past few years....#i think it's a combination of her having a rightfully thin skin after years of being attacked by the whole internet for breathing #and the bad-faith way any of her metaphors or abstract lyrics are interpreted by people trying to make a quick buck from x/tiktok #AND the fact that mass audiences on the whole are illiterate and refuse to/unable to understand any kind of abstraction or metaphor at all #and in response to all that she's like ''fine. i will write in a very literal way that requires no interpretation to know how i feel''#like just look at the stupid ass hyper-literal reaction to ''you wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me''#if folklore came out today ''i knew you/leaving like a father'' would get her accused of stealing valor from REAL deadbeat dad havers #so anyway. it's just less satisfying as a huge fan. i get why she's moving in this direction but i miss when she pushed herself harder #don't yell at me i say all this from a place of love but i hope she course-corrects on the next one bc it's been bumming me out for a min
