I'm rereading book one and this question hit me. If Barristan wasn't fired and was still Kingsguard in book 2, how would he have handled the Sansa of it all? I have no problem thinking he'd stand by while the others abused her, sure. But what would he do if his king commanded him to hit Sansa? Would he do it?

This whole "age accurate book characters trend" is gonna be the death of me in regards to this fandom cuz WHAT DO YOU MEAN that's not a brave war hero fighting for the North, that's a 16 year old boy who wants his mom to tell him everything will be alright, that's not the Breaker of Chains that's a 15 year old girl who's been taken advantage of by men in her life that should've protected her, that's not an elite assassin in training that's a 10 year old girl who misses her family.

Honestly, one of my favorite things about GRRM's writing in asoiaf is how it turns the reader's bloodthirstiness against them.

Take Theon in ACOK, you are cheering in his final chapter because finally! Just desserts for that arrogant foolish bastard!

You read how the Bolton's have him captured in ASOS and say "Heh, good riddance".

And then... you read Reek chapters and with growing horror, you realize who is the person narrating. And suddenly, this need for payback, for him to face justice, doesn't feel that righteous anymore. No person should go through this.

The same goes for Cersei, her blaze of cruelty and scheming catches up to her when the sparrows imprison her. FINALLY, justice! and... you can only stare in horror and disgust at the walk of atonement scene. There is no vindication to be found here.

For me, the important characters had complete arcs this season. Rhaenerya, Alicent, and Daemon (even smaller players like Aegon, Aemond, Criston) all had full arcs that were completed with the final episode, so the fact that we didn't get a huge battle at the end doesn't bother me. This series has never been about spectacle, the ethos of "the human heart in conflict with itself is the only thing worth writing about" is still intact. In fact, I think pushing the Battle of the Gullet to season 3 will actually be a good thing! If this season is all about trying to prevent the war and minimize causalities, then opening season 3 with this huge bloody battle will be a great contrast and set the tone for the rest of that season

ARYA STARK APPRECIATION WEEK:

DAY 1 : FAVORITE CHAPTER: CAT OF THE CANALS

It's really hard to choose a favorite Arya chapter but Cat of the Canals is really up there for me.

One of my favorite things about this chapter specifically is that we get to see Arya (who "Cat" basically is in all but name) interact with other people without the constant pain and stresses of war. I love that George decided that it was important to show the readers how Arya acts within a community and what we see is a girl who is kind, friendly, curious, helpful, confident, funny, and cared for by others.

Through Cat of the Canals, we get to see Arya Underfoot. She's everywhere with everyone and is so so so loved!
