the Netflix ASOUE series is really interesting bc the books were originally marketed as childrens’ books but as children’s books that REALLY didnt want to be children’s books, largely due to Handler (Snicket) not even wanting to write children’s books in the first place and deciding that if he had to write children’s books, he was gonna fuck with the whole damn genre (and that’s why there’s the common theme of ‘look away’ as if to say ‘these books really, really arent what you’re expecting’) and thats a big reason why it took off so much among children; it was basically taking them to the side and saying, “look, we both know children’s media is godawful. im not gonna do any of the stuff that children’s authors usually do, but you can read the books if you want to. dont say i didnt warn you though.”

like daniel handler literally went to schools as himself and told the kids that ‘lemony snicket’ couldnt make it and would often go on rants about how life is disappointing. partially because he didnt wanna play a character but also because he knew the kids would see right through it every time and they did. “they’re in school, they’re used to being lied to,” he said.

and now that those kids have grown up and bought Netflix accounts, the inside jokes are still going; every time Snicket tells you to stop watching, you just smile and think “oh, come on, i know how this goes.”

Who would be Kit Snicket’s favorite brother? Why?

This ask is hard to answer because I think her relationship is just different with Jacques vs Lemony. In canon we don’t get many interactions between J and K so canon wise I can’t definitively say she disliked him. It’s my personal headcanon that they had a tumultuous relationship but that headcanon is just based on how I interpret certain passages. K seems to act more like a mother towards L— the hand-on-cheek tidbit, Lemony going to her for advice(not physically but imaging hes talking to her), Lemony wanting to scream for her when he was in trouble....

TLDR; I wouldn’t say Kit has a favorite, just different relationships. J is her equal while L is someone to parent and protect
