“The Dress” in Aspects of Love
In Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Aspects of Love”, two major points in the plot are Rose and Jenny wearing a dress that belonged to George’s first wife. I’m a little obsessed with Aspects at the moment so I’m making a costume-y post about this dress. Sorry.
1+2 Ann Crumb and Diana Morrison in the OLC, 1989: This is my favourite version of the dress in any production ever. It’s really striking AND it just about matches the description of the dress in the novella by David Garnett. Not to mention, the actresses look stunning in it.
3: Shona Lindsay in the 2007 UK Tour: This is literally the only photo I can find of it, and even then I’m only guessing that this is the dress - at first glance I would have thought it was some fancy dressing gown. It’s very pretty though, if a bit underwhelming.
4+5 Rebecca Brewer at the Menier Chocolate Factory, 2010: I think it’s a bit of a plain design, but it matches a dress described in the book - just not the one that is worn. I think they went with this one so that when Jenny wore it, it matched up to the mermaid theme going on there.
6+7: Jennifer Hope Wills and Jenna Brooke Scannelli at the Walnut Street Theatre, 2011: I really have no clue what this dress might look like overall, but It looks kinda boring and poofy, and doesn’t match up to a time period as such at all (at least, not at a glance - I’m really no expert). Cute though!
