It’s honestly jaw dropping how so many people on this site seriously think the idea that Nazis burned books of erotica was made up recently by fanfic authors as opposed to being made up by… the Nazis.. when they did that… because they did… they used the 1926 Weimar law “Gesetz zur Bewahrung der Jugend vor Schund und Schmutzwritten” (Law to Protect Youth from Trash and Smut Literature) as the legal basis for their book burnings beginning with their seizure of power in 1933 until 1935 when it was rendered obsolete by the newly established Reichsschrifttumskammer (itself a branch of Goebbels’ RKK). “Schmut” or in English “smut” is literally vulgar erotica that managed to escape the stricter definition of “obscenity”. The campaign from churches and right wing political parties to pass the 1926 law was entirely a moral panic about the supposed effects such literature would have on the populace. This isn’t me looking inward for a hunch it’s what the fucking evidence says

Since this is getting notes I wanna make it clear I’m talking about this post people are uncritically reblogging.

It’s ironic how a post that mentions “firsthand accounts of historical atrocities” (btw I have no fucking clue what this person is talking about and am certain is just speaking out of their ass because when I hear “covering up historical atrocities” and “Nazism” I think of Holocaust denial which obviously wasn’t a thing in the 1930s) the OP is going out of their way to provide a false description of what was targeted by Nazi book burning campaigns simply because they think historical truth somehow conforms to their gut feeling and instinct.

Oh also the bit about “scientific research that supports civil rights” seems to be OP half-remembering Magnus Hirschfeld’s Institute for Sex Research. This is doubly ironic because not only was Hirschfeld a staunch opponent of decency campaigns aimed at censorsing of erotic literature but the burning of the Institutes archives was part of the same wave targeting “smut literature” with Hirschfeld’s research being grouped in the same category

Thank you, OP. I saw the post by mirthils and was just too tired to write something about it. The ignorance - or intellectual dishonesty, sometimes I’m not sure which of those two it is - in posts like that is seriously disturbing.  Tiny correction from a German: it’s “Gesetz zur Bewahrung der Jugend vor Schund und Schmutzschriften”, and “smut” is “Schmutz” in German.
