The team from “More than Just Parks” has already done some great work - the Aurora Borealis shot at the front seems like reason enough to click through this video. Here’s their original caption:
This film is the culmination of several weeks spent in the northernmost region of Minnesota known as Voyageurs National Park. Encompassing more than 340 square miles, Voyageurs is a watery wonderland almost exclusively accessible by boat. Journey with us as we explore a land blanketed in pristine lakes, ablaze with kaleidoscopic fall colors, and home to the most spectacular displays of the northern lights on the planet. This is Voyageurs. This film was made possible by the wonderful people at the Voyageurs National Park Association who work so hard to maintain the park for folks like us. I want to become a tour guide of one of those haunted asylum tours. I’d sort of hunch over in my wheelchair, wrapped in a cloak, greeting the people. They’ll be nudging each other, waiting to hear about the crazies.
I’ll beckon them with a single finger, wheeling backwards, letting the darkness consume me. They’ll follow, inch by inch, already trembling with adrenaline.
We’ll enter the asylum. It will be dark. Gloomy.
“Take your seats,” I say.
They’re confused but comply, feeling in the dark, finally reaching a table. They can’t wait. They have their cameras prepared.
Somebody asks if you can still hear the patients’ screams in the corridors.
“Well,” I say, “you can hear someone’s screams.”
Without warning, the door crashes shut. We hear a lock. People start screaming. Panicking. At that moment, the lights come on. We’re sitting in a lecture hall. I whisk off my cloak to reveal a perfectly tailored suit.
“All right, folks,” I say. “Let’s talk about how every single horrifying event that happened in asylums was a direct result of the doctors and nurses committing medical malpractice rather than the patients themselves, shall we? We’ll start with Rosemary Kennedy. Someone get the lights. I have a PowerPoint.”
When you don't know anything about linguistics: The plural of "memorandum" is "memoranda", why can't people get it right
When you know a little about linguistics: The plural of "memorandum" should just be "memorandums" because that's how people naturally say it, "memoranda" is just prescriptivism
When you know a lot about linguistics: Oh my god? So certain English words borrowed from Latin and Greek have competing plural forms, with one form using the English plural -s and the other using a borrowed Latin or Greek form? Do you realize how crazy that is - a language borrowing *inflectional morphology* from another language? And here the two competing plural forms have become markers of education, expertise, and social class, isn't that incredible?
When you have a degree in linguistics and dgaf anymore: memorandibles
A high resolution view
Here you have the most detailed single images ever taken of Earth (as opposed to the blue marble type ones usually stitched together from several satellite passes), snapped by Russia’s Elektro-L weather satellite sitting 35,000 km above the Indian Ocean. Taking a 121 mpx picture every half an hour (for a resolution of 1km per pixel), the data from May 14th 2011 was stitched together by an educator into this brief film of a day on Earth. The data includes infrared as well as the normal 3 visible wavelength bands, making the vegetation appear red as it also does on certain Landsat images. A gigapan image taken by the same bird is linked below, and gives you the opportunity to see how detailed it gets for yourself.

Find Your Asari Name
I want to make one of those silly name maker memes because they’re fun, so let’s try this one.
Asari First Name: - First 3 letters of your preferred first name - Last two or three letters of your mothers middle name (your choice) - Put in an apostrophe if you’re in the mood
Asari Last Name: - First letter of your birth city - Last half(ish) of your middle name - Add a T’ prefix if your current age is an even number
Mine would be Shara T’Selle. Add yours in the tags/reblogs :D
a concept: me, in my cottage, in front of the wood stove, sipping tea. looking outside, my bees are pollinating my expansive garden. my goats and chickens and cows are happy and safe. i feel content with my choices and my future. i unconditionally and recklessly love myself. the local children believe i am a witch.
why are japanese people collectively so absolutely fucking obsessed with safety?
me: I like thunderstorms everyone: GAAASP but they’re DANGEROUS!!!!1!
people: I don’t want to travel me: why not? people: because every other country is SO DANGEROUS!!!!1!!1! terrorism happens sometimes!
me: I like to keep my window (on the second floor in a rich suburb) open because it gets hot in my room if I don’t people: but it’s so DANGEROUS PLEASE DON’T MAKE SUCH BAD DANGEROUS DECISIONS!!!!!!!!!!
I kind of want to scream sometimes.
my traumatized ass: do I have a crush or am I just idolizing this person for being vaguely nice to me
It is a very valid question to ask. Especially if you crave validation from higher status/more popular people.
