watched the hadestown proshot yesterday and. songbird vs. rattlesnake and flowers have always both held a shit ton of sexual abuse undertones but god you could really see it in the proshot. the fact that hades tells persephone that if she "doesn't want my love, I'll give it someone else who does" then immediately turns to Eurydice as he continues. the expression of fear on persephone's face. the fact that eurydice is so terrified yet just a bit entranced by him, but also needs what he has. orpheus jumping between eurydice and hades during way down hadestown-- which feels funny at first because it's itty bitty orpheus trying his best to protect her from Hades-- and then not being able to keep her from him, anyways. it makes me think of how people stay in abusive relationships because they can't financially support themselves or because it's all they know, because it's safer than doing what you truly love, and they can't afford to be unsafe. it's bad for her, and she hates it, but she needs to survive so bad that she can't say no.

do you have a favorite song/moment from the proshot?

I mean is it a cop out to say that truly just every moment Amber Gray is onscreen? she's just such a revelation. she has such incredible control over every part of her performance - her instantly distinctive dancing, her vocals, her facial expressions - that it all seems incredibly effortless. honestly what I appreciated most about the pro-shot was getting to see so many expressions up close, and on that front she really stole the show. she doesn't have to say a word to get across Persephone's joy, grief, mania, rage, fear, love, tenderness, etc. she was really the MVP of the pro-shot for me just just because I felt like more than any other character, my understanding of Persephone was enhanced by getting to see her at such intimate proximity.

and I was so touched by the brief segment at the beginning that showed the actors getting ready, when Gray is staring into her mirror at her own face and says "there she is" with such obvious delight and pride in her work. I read an interview with Gray once where she talked about how every 20 performances or so she would learn something new about Persephone (I'm paraphrasing heavily here, because I don't know if I'll ever be able to find this interview again to source it), and that really stuck with me. I wonder what she learned coming back to the role.

what they don't tell you about hadestown is that orpheus and eurydice are not the main characters. neither are persephone and hades. or hermes. or the fates. the main character is whoever in the band is playing the trombone because holy fuck
