Brian and Astrid

  "I’m not a violent person…well…I have my moments, but people crowded around and I couldn’t get in the hospital and I was almost screaming,” Brian shook his head and closed his eyes, “I just lost control of myself despite everything I knew about public image…”

He rubbed his eye with his index finger and coughed. He looked at Astrid once again for confirmation he was doing what he was supposed to, before letting his gaze fall back to his hands. 

"There was so much adrenaline in my system and I cried when they told me. I threw myself against the wall and collapsed on the ground and cried and screamed. I wish I could have stayed calm…for Yoko. But I…I couldn’t. Everything shattered at that point in time."

Just as Brian said 'shattered', she snapped a photo. 

"Go on...if you like," she told him softly after several seconds of silence. She adjusted the position of her camera as Brian spoke.

  "No, no dear, it’s quite alright," he waved his hand and nodded before letting his eyes fall to the floor. He blinked and thought back.

"It’s a little odd, you see, I haven’t actually answered that question in years. I tend to avoid it. But I was in New York at the time, in my apartment, I was reading and the phone rung. It seemed a little louder, not to sound so….well…anyway, I picked up the phone and Yoko was talking very fast and she sounded like she was in great pain. None of the words made much sense, they sort of flew right through my head almost."

He inhaled a shaky breath.

"She repeated it to me when I failed to understand….and I just went numb. I was shaking and shallow breathing and I went to the hospital…."

She nodded and watched his posture deflate slightly. 

"I understand," she wished she could reach out and touch his hand gently, but she remained behind the camera, watching and waiting.

  He shyly glanced up at her after a few minutes, coming up for air from the memories that had suddenly flooded in. She had a kind gentle face, genuinely interested in his story.

"No more questions?" he asked, clasping his hands together.

She took a step back from her camera and put her hands on her hips. 

"I don't want to cause you any distress," she paused, "How did you hear about John? You do not have to answer if you do not wish to..."

  "I remember John and I being rather stupid with the phone, pretending to call each other," Brian chuckled, "He said - oh I don’t remember now…But goodness he made me laugh." 

Brian rubbed his hand over his chin and sat up, looking up at Astrid.

"I also enjoyed it when one of the boys popped over for tea to talk…. I enjoyed those moments greatly, being closer to them."

Astrid smiled gently and watched the man's eyes light up with the old flames. A smile flicked on his lips every now and then, obviously remembering something from the 'good old days'. Astrid wouldn't ask though, she let him sit in his own world as she captured moments.

"She worries. Instead of thinking, her head spins, mindlessly...without a mind," Stuart's eyelids fluttered as he shuffled even closer to Astrid.

Astrid chuckled and wrapped one arm around him, drifting off soon after.

"I know," he felt his skin tingle at her touch, even after all this time, "I wouldn't want to upset her though. I mean really upset her." He frowned but quickly pushed the negative aside because Astrid was looking at him with starry, sleepy eyes and he couldn't help but lean in to kiss her cheek softly.

"Her mind could change," she tilted her head slightly, "We can not change how we are feeling.”

He yawned into her shoulder and stretched out his legs, wriggling his toes. "I sent it this morning," he replied feeling his body tense slightly, "Hopefully the letter will calm her down."

She nodded thoughtfully. 

"You know you are doing the right thing," she stroked his arm, tracing over his veins lovingly.

Stuart settled beside Astrid near the window where warm afternoon light trickled through the curtains. He curled up beside her, nuzzling her neck, speaking softly into her skin.

She let her fingers gently travel across the top of his head and finally letting her hand rest on his cool cheek. 

"Did you send the…the letter to your mother?" she asked rather sleepily.

  "Oh dear…" he blinked, surprised by the enormity of the questions, "I couldn’t narrow it down to one particular moment, you see, because there were so many…. However, I do remember on my birthday, we were flying from one city to another, and they presented me with an antique phone and announced that it was my birthday over the speaker."

Brian beamed at the memory, feeling the same warmth in his chest he had felt all those years ago. He laughed quietly to himself. 

"I do quite like that one," he added almost wistfully.

She hid her smile behind the camera, a buzz begun to pump through her as she saw Brian transform into exactly how she needed him to be for this shot.

"Do you remember what they said to you?"

  "But, love," he kissed her forehead, "I’m nearly finished, go to bed, I’ll come." 

He watched her look at him with such concern and worry - guilt swirled in his stomach as he watched her slink off out of the attic.

She nodded and kissed his chin and walked towards the door, wishing him a final good night before shutting the door as softly as she could.

  He cleared his throat anxiously but managed a small smile at Astrid. He leaned forward slightly on the stool, elbows on his knees, face propped up by hands. He directed his attention to the plant to his right side, he studied the fine features of a particular leaf of the tree, trying not to let the ‘snapping’ sound of the camera put him off.

She pursed her lips in concentration as she concentrated on Brian. There was something off with his posture. He was too embarrassed about the attention. 

"Can you tell me your fondest memory of The Beatles?" she tried as she snapped away.

  "I’m particularly flattered you would want to photograph me,” he smiled down at his lap, wringing his hands, “I haven’t done this in a while… I admit, I’m quite nervous.” 

There was to be a story on his induction into the RRHF with Astrid’s photos featuring in the lengthy and ridiculously embarrassing article.

She laughed softly, feeling her cheeks warm at the compliment. 

"I see you as the leader of a great movement," she stepped closer to him, "But I know how humble you are, and that is what I want to capture."

She arranged the three plants around him and jumped back behind the camera.

  Brian nodded and smiled politely. 

"Just over here?" he waved his hand over to the stool that sat in front of the white screen. Adjusting the scarf around his neck nervously, he sat on the stool, sitting uncomfortably straight.

"Yes," she smiled and leaped over a cardboard box to reach the potted plant behind the camera. 

"These plants represent the talent you have grown," she smiled kindly and placed the plant on the man's left side, "Thank you again, Mr Epstein. I know you don't usually like publicity about yourself...."

Brian and Astrid ?

Astrid greeted Mr Epstein with a shy smile as he walked in through the doorway. 

"Hello Mr Epstein, my name is Astrid Kirchherr," she waved from the other side of the room, "I'll be taking your photograph today."

She studied the man. He seemed like the 'mystery wrapped in an enigma' sort of man, but with a kind face and perfect manners.

  "Perhaps," he responded and sighed into her hair. Suddenly he felt a little tired like he hadn’t in a while. His racing mind started to slow and there was only Astrid.

"Would you like to rest now?" she whispered, her own eyelids feeling heavy. It was particularly cold that night and she wanted Stuart next to her. More so to keep him warm than the other way around.

  He wrapped one arm around her waist and pulled her closer, resting on hand on the top of her head. 

"I’m just finishing this off," he spoke softly, "You’re quite beautiful at this hour." He let his thumb trace over her cheekbone.

She smiled.

"Trying to charm yourself out of sleep?" she giggled into his paint splattered shirt. She hoped she had said that correctly, she must have, because Stuart chuckled and she hugged him tighter.
