His parents taught Hayate what love in general is. They showed it to him consistently, giving him a peaceful and happy childhood. The only tension he was aware of was his mother’s displeasure that he wanted to imitate his father as a shinobi. That only motivated Hayate to prove that he was strong enough despite his illness. He knew, however, that his parents loved him and each other. Though he had conflict with his parents sometimes, as all children do, he saw little actual pain on looking back. He never doubted his parents’ love, and neither of them betrayed their family. (After Hayate’s death, his parents’ marriage became more tenuous, as his mother couldn’t help blaming his father for encouraging Hayate into the life that killed him.)

Yugao taught him what romantic love is. Though Hayate was the pursuer in their relationship, she opened up a world of new emotions, dreams, and commitments by reciprocating his feelings. For the first time, he began to understand his mother, because the idea of anything happening to Yugao caused him anguish. Sometimes he couldn’t wait until they were married and Yugao was pregnant, so that she wouldn’t have to fight anymore. But would Yugao have been willing to make those changes? And even if Yugao retired as a shinobi, Hayate would take on even more missions to support their family. He would still be in danger of leaving Yugao alone if a mission went wrong. Hayate and Yugao walked a thin line between ecstasy and deep anxiety in their relationship, so learning about romantic love did hurt.

Hayate would want to answer this question with “in Yugao’s arms.” However, both he and Yugao know that there is no real safety in a shinobi’s life. Even their best moments are tinged by the knowledge that either one of them could die on their next mission.

Hayate truly felt safest before he understood any of this, when he was a little child living with his parents. Sometimes he would lay his head in his mother’s lap, and she would sing him to sleep. His father would carry him to bed. Those were the most peaceful times of Hayate’s life.
