Élite (Season 1-3) Review

I want to share a piece of my mind about this show (I need to get this out of my system )

What Ander said to la Inspectora in 2nd season could sum the series up well, "This is all your fault and your crappy investigation. We are kids. We pretend and play at being older, but we don't even know what we're doing half the time. We fall to the ground, because we know that there will always be an adult to pick us up."

Ander here might blame only la Inspectora, but stating that facts, we are being reminded even though the supporting characters are the adults, they do have big influences on these teens' actions and choices.

The way the rich kids belittles the new scholarship students in the beginning, because their parents, friends' parents and heck even the school had been normalising and enforcing this. Polo killing Marina, apart from his obsession to mend things with Carla, I cannot help to think, his upbringing, the pressures from his mothers also push him to do the unimaginable. Carla covering for Polo is her way to protect his own family and Guzman's, she might not do so if her father had not put so much pressure on her. Lu killing Polo because her scholarship being taken away, but she wouldn't be that angry if her father hasn't disowned her.

This is why I love this show. They treat these teens characters as humans with many layers, that it's never that simple as black and white. We see them going all through the pains and hurdles. They are questioning what is right and wrong, and along the way they are defining what makes each of them happy or not, what's worth to protect and what not.  

No one is deserved to be murdered. Not Marina, not Polo. But the 3rd season ending, the way they all come together to cover for Lu, makes sense to me. It makes sense because all of that had happened in 1st and 2nd season. The way the polices and justice system had not done them right with Marina's case, they might just give a shot to muddy the investigation and that way they might get closures how they wanted them to be, without adults' influences.

With these many characters and storylines in a show, it's hard to do proper justice showing the depth of each characters. For example, I wanted to see more sadness coming from Ander after Polo died. Saying that, given the limitations though, I think they done a pretty good job.

“When I was 26, I went to Indonesia and the Philippines to do research for my first book, No Logo. I had a simple goal: to meet the workers making the clothes and electronics that my friends and I purchased. And I did. I spent evenings on concrete floors in squalid dorm rooms where teenage girls—sweet and giggly—spent their scarce nonworking hours. Eight or even 10 to a room. They told me stories about not being able to leave their machines to pee. About bosses who hit. About not having enough money to buy dried fish to go with their rice.

They knew they were being badly exploited—that the garments they were making were being sold for more than they would make in a month. One 17-year-old said to me: “We make computers, but we don’t know how to use them.”

So one thing I found slightly jarring was that some of these same workers wore clothing festooned with knockoff trademarks of the very multinationals that were responsible for these conditions: Disney characters or Nike check marks. At one point, I asked a local labor organizer about this. Wasn’t it strange—a contradiction?

It took a very long time for him to understand the question. When he finally did, he looked at me like I was nuts. You see, for him and his colleagues, individual consumption wasn’t considered to be in the realm of politics at all. Power rested not in what you did as one person, but what you did as many people, as one part of a large, organized, and focused movement. For him, this meant organizing workers to go on strike for better conditions, and eventually it meant winning the right to unionize. What you ate for lunch or happened to be wearing was of absolutely no concern whatsoever.

This was striking to me, because it was the mirror opposite of my culture back home in Canada. Where I came from, you expressed your political beliefs—firstly and very often lastly—through personal lifestyle choices. By loudly proclaiming your vegetarianism. By shopping fair trade and local and boycotting big, evil brands.

These very different understandings of social change came up again and again a couple of years later, once my book came out. I would give talks about the need for international protections for the right to unionize. About the need to change our global trading system so it didn’t encourage a race to the bottom. And yet at the end of those talks, the first question from the audience was: “What kind of sneakers are OK to buy?” “What brands are ethical?” “Where do you buy your clothes?” “What can I do, as an individual, to change the world?”

Fifteen years after I published No Logo, I still find myself facing very similar questions. These days, I give talks about how the same economic model that superpowered multinationals to seek out cheap labor in Indonesia and China also supercharged global greenhouse-gas emissions. And, invariably, the hand goes up: “Tell me what I can do as an individual.” Or maybe “as a business owner.”

The hard truth is that the answer to the question “What can I, as an individual, do to stop climate change?” is: nothing. You can’t do anything. In fact, the very idea that we—as atomized individuals, even lots of atomized individuals—could play a significant part in stabilizing the planet’s climate system, or changing the global economy, is objectively nuts. We can only meet this tremendous challenge together. As part of a massive and organized global movement.

The irony is that people with relatively little power tend to understand this far better than those with a great deal more power. The workers I met in Indonesia and the Philippines knew all too well that governments and corporations did not value their voice or even their lives as individuals. And because of this, they were driven to act not only together, but to act on a rather large political canvas. To try to change the policies in factories that employ thousands of workers, or in export zones that employ tens of thousands. Or the labor laws in an entire country of millions. Their sense of individual powerlessness pushed them to be politically ambitious, to demand structural changes.

In contrast, here in wealthy countries, we are told how powerful we are as individuals all the time. As consumers. Even individual activists. And the result is that, despite our power and privilege, we often end up acting on canvases that are unnecessarily small—the canvas of our own lifestyle, or maybe our neighborhood or town. Meanwhile, we abandon the structural changes—the policy and legal work— to others.”

This is why the media keeps pumping out articles about plastic straws and avocados that focuses on what we, individually, are doing to destroy the environment, when really the most pollution comes from multinational corporations and the only thing that will save us is global collective action.

there are so many filmmakers today outside of hollywood, and especially outside of the west, trying new things and using the art form in such innovative ways to tell such interesting and diverse stories and sure, while it is sad the academy hardly acknowledges any of them, we really shouldn’t wait and rely on such a notoriously limited and self-serving capitalist institution to tell us if they’re good or not

of course it’s a shame that the academy only watched 5 movies last year, but it pains me to see the way people taking this to mean “cinema is dead” and/or “people dont make good films anymore” because there really are so many amazing and talented people out there who renew my love for this medium every single day with their incredible work

instead of complaining about snubs (or at least in addition to doing that) try to actively seek these new gems out. go out to that one indie cinema that’s a little bit out of the way for you, stream whatever you can online, borrow dvds from your local library, attend those foreign film festivals in your city only old people seem to have time for. if it’s within your financial capacity, support these artists any way you can. cinema is too beautiful for us to wait around and go off what the academy has deemed patable, more of us need to go out and decide and enjoy for ourselves

You know what line gets me every time I watch MAD MAX FURY ROAD? 

“Do not, my friends, become addicted to water. It will take hold of you, and you will resent its absence.”

Think about that. “Addicted to water.” It makes it sound like water is an extra luxury that people don’t need but are greedy for, something they should be able to go without, and if they are desperate for it, it’s their own fault, and not the fault of the man who has all of it, and withholds it.

Think about how the people in power tell us not to be greedy for the things we need, like healthcare, like a living wage, like the right to be free of fear and violence in our own communities. The people in power tell us not to be greedy for these things, when they themselves already enjoy them freely, and withhold them from us.

Don’t trust the narrative that tells us we’re being greedy by asking for things that we need.

Don’t trust the asshole sitting on a grassy hilltop with his hand on the spigot telling us not to be greedy for water.

Regret

one way or the other, I began to realize how I haven’t forgive myself completely on not taking my ex-boyfriend seriously (the most endearing guy I’ve got to know, yeah the one before my last good-for-nothing boyfriend). My 20 years old-self was so distracted by the appeal of latin culture and city that I found it hard to be committed to this one guy from my hometown.. and you know, to think about it, after broken up with him, my world began collapsing, I became this ‘zombie’ who not really sure what to do with her life that she only cares about enjoying the present and made her forget with her obligation or duty as a daughter.

It’s been 7 years, here I am still trying to make peace with myself , letting go past mistake and in bed with regret every single night.
