JosĂŠ Olivarez, âLetâs Get Marriedâ
sorry if this has been asked before, but what are your favorite quotes about (romantic) love?
⢠âI love you. I want us both to eat well.âÂ
â Christopher Citro, from âOur Beautiful Life When Itâs Filled with Shriekâ
⢠âYou kiss the back of my legs and I want to cry. Only the sun has come this close, only the sun.â
â Shauna Barbosa, from âGPSâ
⢠âAugust. We were arguing. You want love to be like this every day donât you? 92 degrees even in the shade.â
âI used to be a hopeless romantic. I am still a hopeless romantic. I used to believe that love was the highest value. I still believe that love is the highest value. I donât expect to be happy. I donât imagine that I will find love, whatever that means, or that if I do find it, it will make me happy. I donât think of love as the answer or the solution. I think of love as a force of nature - as strong as the sun, as necessary, as impersonal, as gigantic, as impossible, as scorching as it is warming, as drought-making as it is life-giving. And when it burns out, the planet dies.â
âIf love is going to be done differently I will have to do it. I donât mean as a messiah-thing, I mean as a me-thing. I want to look into your eyes and not get blown up. I want you to see me as I am and not destroy me. I donât want to retreat into plant life, or have the same bad dream every night. I donât want to watch a city burn because I was there.â
â Jeanette Winterson
⢠âIâll take care of you. / Itâs rotten work. / Not to me. Not if itâs you.â
â from Anne Carsonâs translation of Orestes
⢠âI think of you all the time and therefore have little to say that would not embarrass you, for instance my first feeling about the rain was that it was like you.â
â John Cage, from a letter to Merce Cunningham
⢠âI want you to know, if you ever read this, there was a time when I would rather have had you by my side than any one of these words; I would rather have had you by my side than all the blue in the world.â
â Maggie Nelson, Bluets
⢠âI want to be a village full of sweethearts, / as you are, every second of the day, / cooking me soups & drawing me pictures / & holding me, my inexplicable & elephant sadness, / with your infinite arms. / But isnât it true, you are not / always why I am happy. & I promise / it is true, you are almost never why, / why I am sad.â
â Chen Chen, from âElegy for My Sadnessâ
⢠âLook here Vitaâthrow over your man, and weâll go to Hampton Court and dine on the river together and walk in the garden in the moonlight and come home late and have a bottle of wine and get tipsy, and Iâll tell you all the things I have in my head, millions, myriads â They wonât stir by day, only by dark on the river. Think of that. Throw over your man, I say, and come.â
âI always have such need to merely talk to you. Even when I have nothing to talk about â with you I just seem to go right ahead and sort of invent it. I invent it for you. Because I never seem to run out of tenderness for you and because I need to feel you near.â
âI could only think of you as being very distant and beautiful and calm. A lighthouse in clean waters.â
âWhat can one say â except that I love you and Iâve got to live through this strange quiet evening thinking of you sitting alone. Dearest â let me have a line⌠You have given me such happinessâŚâ
â Virginia Woolf, from letters to Vita Sackville-West
⢠âI am reduced to a thing that wants Virginia. I composed a beautiful letter to you in the sleepless nightmare hours of the night, and it has all gone. I just miss you, in a quite simple desperate human way. I canât be clever and stand-offish with you: I love you too much for that. Too truly. You have no idea how stand-offish I can be with people I donât love. I have brought it to a fine art. But you have broken down my defences. And I donât really resent it.âÂ
âPlease, in all this muddle of life, continue to be a bright and constant star. Just a few things remain as beacons: poetry, and you, and solitude.â
â Vita Sackville-West, from letters to Virginia Woolf
â˘Â âLove is awful. Itâs awful. Itâs painful. Itâs frightening. It makes you doubt yourself, judge yourself, distance yourself from the other people in your life. It makes you selfish. It makes you creepy, makes you obsessed with your hair, makes you cruel, makes you say and do things you never thought you would do. Itâs all any of us want, and itâs hell when we get there. So no wonder itâs something we donât want to do on our own. I was taught if weâre born with love then life is about choosing the right place to put it. People talk about that a lot, feeling right, when it feels right itâs easy. But Iâm not sure thatâs true. It takes strength to know whatâs right. And love isnât something that weak people do. Being a romantic takes a hell of a lot of hope. I think what they mean is, when you find somebody that you love, it feels like hope.â
â Phoebe Waller-Bridge, in Fleabag
⢠âi carry your heart with me(i carry it inmy heart)â
â e.e. cummings, from â[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]â
⢠âThere was once a very great American surgeon named Halsted. He was married to a nurse. He loved her-immeasurably. One day Halsted noticed that his wifeâs hands were chapped and red when she came back from surgery. And so he invented rubber gloves. For her. It is one of the great love stories in medicine. The difference between inspired medicine and uninspired medicine is love. When I met Ana I knew: I loved her to the point of invention.â
â Sarah Ruhl, The Clean House
⢠âoh god itâs wonderful / to get out of bed / and drink too much coffee / and smoke too many cigarettes / and love you so muchâ
â Frank OâHara, from âStepsâ
⢠âThis morning thereâs snow everywhere. We remark on it. You tell me you didnât sleep well. I say I didnât either. You had a terrible night. âMe too.â Weâre extraordinarily calm and tender with each other as if sensing the otherâs rickety state of mind. As if we knew what the other was feeling. We donât, of course. We never do. No matter. Itâs the tenderness I care about. Thatâs the gift this morning that moves and holds me. Same as every morning.â
â Raymond Carver, from âThe Giftâ
⢠âWell Marianne, itâs come to this time when we are really so old and our bodies are falling apart and I think I will follow you very soon. Know that I am so close behind you that if you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine.â
â Leonard Cohen, in a letter to Marianna Ihlen
⢠âI think about love on a scale from 1 to 10. Most of us find a 6 or a 7, and thatâs why we have divorce. Itâs the truth. We settle for that 6 or 7. But I like to think Kevin is Chironâs 10. Heâs found that and he realizes that thereâs no reason to settle for a 6 or a 7 because, âI know this person is my 10. Whether or not this person believes Iâm his 10, Iâm going to devote my life to this person entirely.â Thatâs why the line where he says, âYouâre the only man thatâs ever touched me,â for me, was the most amazing, most beautiful thing Iâve seen in cinema, period. Because thatâs what we strive for as people, to find that one person because theyâre there. If Kevin doesnât feel that they should be together, Chiron is just going to die a miserable person because thatâs his person and he wonât settle for anything else.â
â Trevante Rhodes about Moonlight
⢠âI look at you and I would rather look at you than all the portraits in the worldâ
â Frank OâHara, from âHaving a Coke with Youâ but the whole poem is !
⢠âThe door slammed and someone came home and low voices could be heard, the single lilt of a question as it rose, âHow was it?â or âAre you hungry?â Something plain and necessary, yet extra, with care, a voice like those tiny roofs over the phone booths along the train tracks, the ones made from the same shingles used for houses, except only four rows wideâjust enough to keep the phone dry. And maybe thatâs all I wantedâto be asked a question and have it cover me, like a roof the width of myself.â
â Ocean Vuong, from On Earth Weâre Briefly Gorgeous
⢠âI keep wishing for you, keep shutting up my eyes and looking toward the sky, asking with all my might for you, and yet you do not come. I thought of you, until the world grew rounder than it sometimes is, and I broke several dishes.â
â Emily Dickinson, in a letter to Minnie Holland
⢠âI donât want you to be nervous. Maybe thinking of a walrus would help. Have you seen the video of the penguin accidentally stepping on a sleeping walrus? It thought it was a rock. The walrus wakes up like what the fuck and the penguin scurries off like oh shit. Sometimes itâs funny watching a surprise happen, and not just funny but kind of amazing â like, you never really know whatâs what when it comes to this planet.
Then again, when itâs you getting surprised, thatâs different. Especially for tender ones like us. What are we supposed to do? Itâs bad for our hearts, you know. I hope you wonât need pills like I do. I think I get so scared because Iâm greedy â I want to hold onto everything, the world wants to take it away. What the fuck. The number of hours we have together is actually not so large. Please linger near the door uncomfortably instead of just leaving. Please forget your scarf in my life and come back later for it.â
â Mikko Harvey, âFor Mâ
⢠âWillem sleeps on the left side of the bed, and he on the right, and the first night they slept in the same bed, he turned to his right on his side, the way he always did, and Willem pressed up against him, tucking his right arm under his neck and then across his shoulders, and his left arm around his stomach, moving his legs between his legs. He was surprised by this, but once he overcame his initial discomfort, he found he liked it, that it was like being swaddled. One night in June, however, Willem didnât do it, and he worried he had done something wrong. The next morningâearly mornings were the other time they talked about the things that seemed too tender, too difficult, to be said in the daylightâhe asked Willem if he was upset with him, and Willem, looking surprised, said no, of course not. âI just wondered,â he began, stammering, âbecause last night you didnâtââ But he couldnât finish the sentence; he was too embarrassed. But then he could see Willemâs expression clear, and he rolled into him and wrapped his arms around him. âThis?â he asked, and he nodded. âIt was just because it was so hot last night, Willem said, and he waited for Willem to laugh at him, but he didnât. âThatâs the only reason, Judy.â Since then, Willem has held him in the same way every night, even through July, when not even the air-conditioning could erase the heaviness from the air, and when they both woke damp with sweat. This, he realizes, is what he wanted from a relationship all along. This is what he meant when he hoped he might someday be touched.â
â Hanya Yanagihara, A Little Life
⢠âNo, I didnât imagine my being alone with you the way you do. If I want the impossible, I want it in its entirety. Entirely alone, dearest, I wanted us to be entirely alone on this earth, entirely alone under the sky, and to lead my life, my life that is yours, without distraction and with complete concentration, in you.â
â Franz Kafka, from a letter to Felice Bauer
⢠âIf I could attach our blood vessels so we could become each other I would. If I could attach our blood vessels in order to anchor you to the earth, to this present time, I would. If I could open up your body and slip inside your skin and look out your eyes and forever have my lips fused with yours, I would.â
â David Wojnarowicz, The Half-Life
⢠âI could recognize him by touch alone, by smell, I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.â
â Madeline Miller, The Song of Achilles
⢠âIf Moses had seen the way my friendâs face blushes when heâs drunk, and his beautiful curls and wonderful hands, he would not have written in his Torah: do not lie with a manâ
â Rabbi Yehuda Al-Harizi/Judah Ben Solomon Harizi
⢠âIâll rob the bank that gave you the impression that money is more fruitful than words, and Iâll cut holes in the ozone if it means you have one less day of rain. Iâll walk you to the hospital, Iâll wait in a white room that reeks of hand sanitizer and latex for the results from the MRI scan that tries to locate the malady that keeps your mind guessing, and I want to write you a poem every day until my hand breaks and assure you that youâll find your place, itâs just the world has a funny way of hiding spots fertile enough for bodies like yours to grow roots. I hope our ghosts arenât eating you alive. If iâm to speak for myself, Iâll tell you that the universe is twice as big as we think it is and youâre the only one that made that idea less devastating.â
â Lucas Regazzi, from âSmallâ
⢠âI thought she was sleeping until I heard her call out from across the room, âWill you bring me a glass of water?â I did. Then in her always-sleepy tone and drawl she said, âDo you remember when you were a little girl and you would ask your mama to bring you a glass of water?â Yeah. âYou know how half the time you werenât even thirsty. You just wanted that hand that was attached to that glass that was attached to that person you just wanted to stay there until you fell asleep.â She took the glass of water that I brought her and just sat it down full on the table next to her. Wow, I thought. What am I gonna do with love like this.â
â Dito Montiel, One Night
Moon in Taurus - Vanilla Moon Beam
The Moon in Taurus was designed by Aphrodite beneath a moonstruck madness. Her appearance may give the impression of glamour and sensuality veiled behind a full moon hue. Dressed in raven and the dark spectrum, grape wine lips, and softly sculpted feminine features and gestures. An after hours burlesque show showcasing the classic beauty of Hollywoodâs golden era.
The Gods left natural pleasures as comfort bundles everywhere for the Moon in Taurus. She is drawn to simple delicacies and delicacies, though her version of âsimplicityâ may not come easily, affordably, or modestly. She can wake up in the cradle of her pastel satin sheets from a bedroom with a view and feel like a Princess. And she may continue to role-play this royal fantasy as she dresses and prepares for the day, just as she did when she was a little girl. She may have always carried this sense that she was born with a greater purpose than where she came from. During these years, she may have constantly longed for a new beginning or name, gazing into the houses she passed wishing she was home, measuring her body and image against everyone, endless observations of everything she didnât have. She waits for the day that she is taken away to the life she is meant to lead. The fairytale never loses its glow within the Moon in Taurus, and she waits for the day that she is taken away to the life she is meant to lead. Eventually she matures out of this, but never quite grows out of it. The necessary inner work blooms the self-value that makes these longings or fantasies insignificant as she realises her blessings in everyday reality.
The heavenly muse is a therapist for the Moon in Taurus. Soaking in the bliss of creative expression, pouring her whole body and emotional energy into the honeypot and creating with the dew of the moon. This is not escape, but a reroute for the pain, inspiration mixing with injury to withdraw the poison into slow blooming poetry. When this inner activity has nowhere to flow, the Moon in Taurus can become the bull in the china shop, the melancholic lethargic, and contaminating with old rage. And this doesnât have to be her own exhibition, it could also be the hypnosis of her favourite song or the warm pages of the book that she is reading.Â
Itâs important for the individual to schedule routine mindfulness or meditative practices that bring her back to the present. History does not die inside this body. Memories, experiences, and unresolved emotions from the past wash up on the conscious bank when she is in a similar mood or headspace, or when she is feeling tired or unwell. At worst, and during her most troubled times, she is presented a nightly cinematic replay from her memory chest. She rewinds and re-enacts old wounds in current relationships, she can feel the hand of her old betrayer in the touch of her lover. However, this can also become tuned to a priceless gift, a passage to return to sweet nostalgia in a very vivid daydream. She can bring photo back into the present and hold onto it for as long as needed.Â
Another side-effect of the Moon in Taurus is a strong and subconsciously desperate attachment style. Itâs a consuming infusion into rituals, vices, people, and relationship partners that validate unresolved needs. Though once resolved, redeemed, and drained, she does not leave. She needs to leave, she has already received the dose required- but canât or doesnât want to. The risk is remaining chronically unsatisfied in repeated cycles of comfortable self-sabotage. She proves her strength and virtue in repeated tests of character, but learning to let go and loosen her grip may be the greater challenge.
The condition of Moon in Taurus is very receptive to the âmoodâ of a room. Emotional distress turn her senses to extreme volume, so every sound can be deafening, every light blinding, and every person threatening. Aromatic candles, a room with a view, crisp and fresh forest air, the smell of home cooking, exquisite simplicity are natural mood enhancers. She retreats to childhood comforts to console her, maybe affection, old movies, a make-over, and her favourite âcomfortâ foods. Her desire to devour or starve emotions makes establishing a pattern of moderation and inner stability imperative for wellbeing. Anxiety and stress are overloaded with calories, and sometimes a mere difficult day is recorded in her weight.Â
Particular necessities underlie her emotional and inner regularity. These tend to be related to the needs of the Taurus archetype, like long-term security in finances, residence, work, and relationship. She is admirably resilient and endures plenty of secret battles that remain mostly private, and yet evident in her early maturity and serene acceptance of the seasons of earth, time, life, and that such rhythms exist within her. The fear of losing her soundness of mind, being taken advantage of, or complete loss of independence can be a surprising feature in her desire to gain emotional control. Even when the roaring tide of tears begins to slam against her chest, and she feels that familiar narrowing in her throat, she would dare not expose the storm roaring inside. Itâs proof that she has encountered depths of life that only she knows, and it makes her stellar company in high stake emergencies and chaotic scenarios. And while onlookers may comment that she is slow or detached, she is the one that remains dignified and standing strong at the end. She tends to be the type that takes a quiet step outside to take a breath and re-orient herself. Or maybe she takes a momentary vacation before her favourite scene on earth, like the sunset or the ocean front to cleanse the tension away. In due time, she boards the inner dream liner far away from the commotion and toward oasis, and she does not have to move a step.Â
The Moon in Taurus is not outwardly a leader, but she is relied upon just the same. People look to her to guide and lead the way when all hell has broken loose, the composed and wise Empress that brings chaos into a controlled medium like she is conducting an orchestra. She only seems to become observably shaken and irrational when there is concern or unease surrounding a loved one or family member.
In the milky hue of the twilight moon, the empress of the woods  playing the constellations as music notes through her violin fingertips mascara melted by the night sky and highlighter borrowed from the stars special child of aphroditeâs secret pearl safe, secure and sound inside the hidden shell

Earth moons
Taurus: Individuals with their moon in Taurus will crave stability and will always want security above all. Taurus moons get a bad reputation for wanting âpriceyâ or âbeautifulâ materialistic objects but they are actually very financially responsible and they want whatever they buy to be able to also last and sustain them into their later years. Of course this moon sign does tend to live lavishly and want grand things but they want them only if itâs going to provide them the same way it would provide them now and into the future. They are very responsible, effective and hard workers. They work for everything they want and when they do get what they want they enjoy it, even when itâs years later. Taurus moons invest their time and love in people, they want that time and love to be reciprocated and they want to be valued greatly just as they hold everyone they trust so highly. Their love and trust is unmatched and they donât give it so easily so when you are close to a Taurus moon, know that they are yours forever. The only ânegativeâ side to a Taurus moon would be their laziness, of course they only get relaxed if they get too comfortable with their surroundings and have no motivation for a clear vision or path. Taurus moons are very loving people in the end and will love with their everything when they care deeply for something or someone.
-
Virgo: Virgo moon people will do everything in their power to give, give and give. They want to be a helper and service to anyone in need. It is easy for them to listen to people, to offer guidance and give them any constructive help they need but if it is the other way around Virgo moons tend to cover up their emotions heavily. You can usually find Virgo moons in a certain role, as if they are the therapist and you are opening up to them in ways youâve never opened up to anyone. They want to help you fix your problems and try to give you a better or more fixable solution to something going on in your life that you feel you canât control or fight on your own. Virgo moons need organization, practicality, and order in their lives to feel ârelaxedâ there needs to be some form of âscheduleâ or organized list of things in their everyday life. This could include just regular diet, cleaning, working out etc. They are very immaculate, when it comes to anything they think or touch. There is just a way they go about work, for them it needs to be structured and well thought out with steps. Sometimes itâs hard for them to let things go because theyâd prefer for everything to be perfect? To have fine detail and to be excellent for they only want to offer the best that they can give and sometimes thatâs not even enough for themselves. That can also be considered a ânegativeâ side to them as well, needing perfection and striving for everything to be impeccable. Sometimes when something isnât up to their standards they can get obsessive until it is considered âperfectâ which can get unhealthy sometimes if they donât know when to stop. Virgo moons, truly though just want to help others and be there for people, even if they can be too honest. That is their way of helping you and putting you on your best track.
-
Capricorn: Individuals with their moon in Capricorn are efficient, strong and focused. They are fiercely ambitious when it comes to all aspects in life, family, work and friends. You can usually see Capricorn moon people in leadership roles or second in command oriented work situations. Thatâs usually only because they are able to take on a lot of responsibility and people hold a lot of respect for them. For Capricorn moon signs they work hard and forget about themselves sometimes while doing so. They forget that there is a lot that they feel and itâs hard for them to actually acknowledge their needs, wants and desires. A lot of the time Capricorn moons are called âhardâ or âcoldâ but thatâs not the case, they are very strong and always just takes on the role of being the ârockâ for others but they do have a lot going on and itâs hard for them to be open about that. Their hardest mission in life isnât actually achieving, because they easily can with determination and hard work. Their hardest mission in life is facing the question what do they actually want? You wonât find a Capricorn moon individual playing the victim role usually and they know when theyâve done wrong or have been wronged. It is important that they learn to be open or have someone they can open up to or they will enfold on themselves and will hate themselves further for not being able to be honest about how they feel and what they need or want in life. They are the kind of friend to give you tough love, but thatâs coming from the bottom of their heart. Capricorn moons have feelings and they feel deeply so donât feel hurt or too bothered if they arenât as âtalkativeâ about whatâs going on with them as you might be.

Sense of Humor
Mercury in Aries: jokes at othersâ expense, tries to be funnier than the people around them, likes to tease (or goad), loves wacky dares, very physical and demonstrative, does funny things more than says them, immature, likes stunts. Mercury in Taurus: quirky, charming, classic, lots of idioms, euphemisms, and innuendos, subtle implications, smooth, flirtatious, sophisticated, rhetorical, doesnât exactly âjokeâ but theyâre entertaining anyway, can be dry or ironic. Mercury in Gemini: turns everything into a joke, can be inappropriate, very quick-witted, clever, ironic, rhetorical, demonstrative, loves to use facial expressions, silly, playful, loves pranks and games, punny, mischievous. Mercury in Cancer: sometimes indirect and subtle but seldom sarcastic or dry, old-fashioned, loves to make puns, wholesome humor, cute, silly, can be demonstrative, may exaggerate, mostly simple & fun, often immature. Mercury in Leo: very dramatic, jokes at literally everybodyâs expense (including their own), makes playfully arrogant/vain statements, demonstrative, loves to exaggerate, very perceptive of reactions & caters to their âaudience.â Mercury in Virgo: tells jokes people donât get, good at puns, can be self-depreciating, dry humor, witty, often ironic, jokes are complaints & complaints are jokes, sophisticated, canât play along, good at telling amusing stories. Mercury Libra: might disguise unkind jokes under charm/niceness, master of ârelatableâ jokes, makes a lot of references, often dramatic, indirect, avoids sarcasm, usually tries to make sure their jokes arenât at anybodyâs expense. Mercury in Scorpio: dark humor (sometimes offensively so), inside jokes galore, ironic, sarcastic, indirect, vague, often takes their jokes too far, tells jokes for their own enjoyment, likes to get reactions, mildly mean, rhetorical. Mercury in Sagittarius: exaggerates a lot (& tends to be sarcastic as a result), often offensive, uses a lot of accents, tells hilarious stories, very blunt & direct, can be mean, canât tell a joke with a straight face, inappropriate. Mercury in Capricorn: tends to be condescending, very dry humor, hilarious things spoken in a totally deadpan manner, extremely sarcastic in a bland but entertaining way, âintellectualâ jokes, lots of shrugs and eye-rolls, mature. Mercury in Aquarius: usually pretty offensive, witty, loves pushing the envelope of comedy, tests people, very sarcastic, the kind of person to stretch their joke on for as long as possible & keep adding to it, enjoys reactions. Mercury in Pisces: self-depreciating, amazing at impressions & mimicking, very creative & good at situational humor, endlessly ironic, makes sure you know theyâre joking & probably apologizes for a lot of their jokes, vague.
Your Jupiter sign generally describes what you consider to be funny, so if you have Jupiter in Aries, for example, you will likely laugh the most at people who have an Aries sense of humor.
Mercury or Jupiter in aspect to the sun: sense of humor will be more dramatic, self-centered, creative, unique, and exhibitionistic. Mercury or Jupiter in aspect to the moon: sense of humor will be more innocent, wholesome, considerate, softer, and more modest. Jupiter in aspect to Mercury: sense of humor will be wittier, exaggerated, more inappropriate, playful, mischievous, quirky, and youthful. Mercury or Jupiter in aspect to Venus: sense of humor will be more graceful, sophisticated, refined, classic, inoffensive, polite, and charming. Mercury or Jupiter in aspect to Mars: sense of humor will be more aggressive, impactful, immature, quick, mean, demonstrative, and boyish. Mercury or Jupiter in aspect to Saturn: sense of humor will be more dry, mature, sarcastic, careful, calm, reserved, and uncertain. Mercury or Jupiter in aspect to Uranus: sense of humor will be more eccentric, offensive, unique, shocking, strange, random, and interesting. Mercury or Jupiter in aspect to Neptune: sense of humor will be more imaginative, sensitive, nonsensical, unique, adaptable, and confusing. Mercury or Jupiter in aspect to Pluto: sense of humor will be more intense, morbid, taboo, interesting, controversial, twisted, and reserved.
The subject/object of your humor is often related to the theme of the houses which have some form of contact to Gemini/Mercury or Sagittarius/Jupiter energies. For example, if you have Gemini on the sixth house cusp, you will likely be humorous, mischievous, and playful in work environments with your coworkers and employees. Easy Tarot for Beginners: Cups
Welcome back to the âEasy Tarot for Beginnersâ series! For all the current posts in this series, click here. More are on the way, so stay tuned!
Learning to read the tarot can seem like a daunting task, but beginners should know that while it takes time to develop nuanced skill, there are some pretty easy ways to jump in and learn what you need to know to get started.
In this series of posts, Iâll be exploring the minor arcana. Many people tackle this subject by attempting to learn the elemental properties of the four suits and the numerological associations of the numbered cards. These methods are a great foundation and vital to a more complex understanding of the cards, but what if there was a simpler, faster way to learn the minor arcana without rote memorization? Well, there is:
Learn the story.
Each minor arcana suit tells a story, and the meaning of every card within that suit depends on the cards that came before it. When you understand how the story of the cards unfolds, itâs easier to understand what they mean. The story the tarot tells in its imagery is often called the âFoolâs Journey,â so weâll follow the adventures of the Fool through the minor arcana.
Now, letâs explore the story of the Cups:
A new stirring of emotion arises for the Fool, one that feels positive and full of potential.
The Fool meets another person and recognizes that they, too, share this wonderful feeling! Deciding that they must be kindred spirits, the Fool forges a connection.
Over time, the Foolâs family of kindred souls begins to grow even larger, and they celebrate their union with friendship, revelry, and good times.
After a while, the Fool realizes that despite the festivity and kinship, something crucial is missing. As a result, they grow disillusioned with what once made them happy and begin to isolate themselves.
Unfortunately, the Fool remains withdrawn for too long, and their family of kindred spirits begins to disperse. The three cups that were lifted in revelry before are now spilled, and although some connections still remain, the Fool is too bereaved and regretful to enjoy them.
Having learned a profound lesson, the Fool begins to reminisce fondly about earlier times, finding solace in the happy memories. Now unburdened, the Fool is moved to share their newfound sense of simple peace with others.
Having their head so often in the clouds, however, soon leads the Fool to a place where they are perhaps a bit too optimistic, seeing a number of opportunities for emotional fulfillment that may not actually be there (or, if they are, will almost certainly not pan out the way the Fool imagines).
The Fool learns their lesson the hard way, discovering that sometimes, some things really are too good to be true. Having learned the value of happiness and deciding to finally seek what will truly give them emotional fulfillment, the Fool leaves behind what they know in search of a more meaningful life.
And a meaningful life they find, having discovered the secret to long-term happiness: Self-care and self-satisfaction. After all, if you donât care for and love yourself, how can you care for and love others? Thus, the Fool spends some time fulfilling themselves rather than seeking fulfillment elsewhere.
Finally, the Fool achieves the happiness that eluded them earlier: Now that they know how to care for themselves, they are finally able to devote themselves to a new family, knowing at last that happiness does not come from what others can offer you, but from giving others what you have to offer.
Keep in mind that there are many ways to interpret the cards; as tarot readers, in a way we are also storytellers, and the story will inevitably change in small ways as each new storyteller tackles the tale. How do you relate to this story? Does it seem accurate to you? Have you had any of these experiences, or have you had other experiences that seem to fit the cards (and story) better?
Wishing you well on your tarot learning journey!
