Here's the final product. It took me a long time to complete. I wasn't able to take frequent process pictures as I'd hoped due to camera failure. Overall, I really like how it turned out. I just wish it could look a little more realistic... Oh well. I'm proud of how well I was able to accomplish this project and how it really gave me LOTS of great technique to further improve my art!
Progress Update
I'm now starting my final product! It will be charcoal, like the rest of everything I've done so far, but the outline will be in light pencil this time so it looks more professional. I'll use white chalk for the highlights. Whoooooo, okay, I'm going to get to work. I'll be very frequently posting pictures of progress.
Here's a picture Mr. Aplin and I drew during the third and fourth lessons. I'm not really happy with it, to be honest. It looks odd. I'll definitely be creating a different final product, although this was supposed to be the final thing.
I drew this based off of the online tutorial I posted earlier, "How to Draw the Head From Any Angle." AMAZING website. Very helpful.
This website is seriously amazing. It has all the basics of drawing the placement of the skull. Mr. Aplin's lessons were mostly for facial structure, so this is an awesome way to combine the two into drawing a head. I'll post a picture soon of what I drew from this website.
So I keep talking about Mr. Aplin's fantastic skills... Here's a portrait he did awhile back, just so you know. Very awesome.
This is a really basic, simplistic understanding of the parts of shadow. Very helpful for drawing anything, really, but because there is so much shadow in a face (which is FULL of concave and convex shapes), it is imperative to be correct on the placement of the elements of shadow and this website is quite informative for that.
This is the result of the second lesson from Mr. Aplin, where we went over shading. He told me about five different types of shading: the full light (the highlight; usually just a spec of white), the half tone (the more normal, not very shaded part), the shadow edge (the shadow on the object), the cast shadow (the shadow coming off of the object onto the platform), and the reflected light (the light that bounces around the object and rises from the cast shadow). The best way to demonstrate this was by drawing an egg, which I did, with the help of Mr. Aplin.
This is the skeletal form of the face. I drew this with the aid of Mr. Aplin during our first lesson of four. This shows basically where everything falls on a universal face; of course, every face is different, but these are the "abouts."
The second picture was drawn at a later time. It is a piece of tracing paper over the original skeleton to display shading.
Progress Update
Working with Mr. Aplin has been incredible! I've worked twice at his house (studio in the back). First of all, he has an INCREDIBLE studio/house. His easel is beautiful. The windows in the back give North light perfectly onto his artwork. It’s awesome.
Last week, we went over all of the basic structures of the face, such as contour lines, placement of eyes, nose, etc., and everything like that. This week we discussed shading. He had me draw an egg with serious shading to understand the shading of the face. He says there are 5 parts of color in everything: the highlight, mid tone, shadow, reflected light, and cast shadow. He said knowing the way of the facial placement and the way to shade well are the only two most important things about drawing a head. All of his information is very helpful.
In other news, I believe I’ll end up doing a charcoal or graphite portrait of a girl not looking at the screen, but over her knees, in a Thinker style pose. The light will be really suttle and soft. Maybe I’ll try some acrylic paint. I don’t know quite yet. I’ll need to decide by next week.
My next door neighbor from when I was a really little kid just so happens to be an incredible artist. I've been looking all over for a mentor, and as long as he replies to my email, I'll have this guy! He's really, really good and I'm hoping it will work out.
This is one of the coolest/most helpful websites I've seen when talking about learning how to draw proportionate and realistic faces. Crazy cool.
