The day had already been a long one, and the reality was, it wasn’t anywhere near over. Briella sighed, closing her eyes for a moment as she took in the fact that she’d need to seek another individual to assist with her housing assignment. She’d arrived to the palace late, after encountering a problem with her luggage at the airport. Once that had been solved, she was forced to wait for a new ride to be sent, as the van carrying the rest of the contestants had already departed. She’d realized instantly she’d missed the bulk of orientation by the time she arrived, and therefore was left completely unaware of whom she was supposed to be rooming with, and where. “Thank you for hearing me out, and pointing me in the right direction.” Briella’s eyes scanned the woman in front of her. “Wait, you’re not another contestant? Bummer. It would have been nice to have spoken to at least one person in the same situation. I’m sure I’ll have the chance to do plenty of that later, though.” Smiling, she extended a hand for the woman to shake. “I’m Briella Ortiz, it’s nice to meet you…?” She paused, waiting for the other to share her name. “So you’re working, then. Were you here before the show, or were you hired specifically for this?”

acadia struggles to keep the smile on her face as the other woman mentions mistaking her for a contestant. it would have been hard to explain why that was such an insult without offending someone within ear shot and acadia just wasn’t in the mood. she was sure there would be plenty of trouble to come in the future, once they got over the hustle and bustle of the first couple of days. there’s a moment of hesitation as acadia’s gaze goes to the outstretched hand, talking herself into reaching out and lightly setting her own hand inside, giving a very light and quick shake — flimsy in a way that betrays how infrequently she offers her own hand. “ms. feng,” she introduces herself, keeping it relatively formal. plenty of time for niceties later. still she nods at the comment of her work. “that’s right, i’m a personal assistant to the royal family. of course i also work closely with some of the personal assistants for the contestants so if you raise a complaint to them i’m sure it’ll end up in my lap sooner or later.” a small shrug of her shoulders at the mention of how long she’s worked here. “i’ve worked with the volgrave family for more than a handful of years now — well before the show.” a chatty one, this one. perhaps she simply needed a little conversation to set her nerves at easy. “and you? what exactly is it that you were doing before coming here?”

Sebastian’s eyes followed the woman’s figure as she made her way around the kitchen, his lips forming a tight line before shifting into a vague frown. “Yes, my kitchen. My family’s kitchen. Not here for just anyone to traipse into on any whim which might call for it.” Taking in her cocked eyebrow and demeanor, Sebastian found himself more than a bit taken aback. While it certainly was not usual for him to speak to others in the tone which he’d taken, it was even more of a shock that the woman would have spoken to him in such a manner.

The Prince’s brows furrowed as the woman continued moving around the kitchen, now beginning to riffle through the cabinets, shifting and searching as she pleased. Her disdain for the beverages being offered, along with her candor in speaking about them, took him even further aback. While he was aware that champagne may not have been everyone’s tastes, he was more than aware that their finest stock had been broken out for the introductory celebrations. Hearing such a strong disagreement to the product left him near reeling as he worked to stop himself from taking the words as a personal affront.

“Excuse me.” Sebastian spoke, his tone hardening a bit further, commanding attention as he was known to do. “While I admittedly have no knowledge of who you are, nor where you are from, I find it hard to believe it is customary to begin riffling through things which do not belong to you in your part of the world.” Stepping forward, he cocked his head, expression having shifted into one of complete shock. “Furthermore, I find it hard to believe anyone might have raised you to believe it was acceptable to announce so firmly an aversion to what is being served, most especially when you are a guest in the home of another.” Crossing his arms over his chest, Sebastian considered what his next move might be. “Not that it should be any of your business, but I can assure you that you shall not find what you seek here. I realize they may not have passed out maps of any kind, which I admittedly prefer. However, I can assure you that your search would be far more productive if conducted in the Wine Cellar.”

pausing in her search to cast a dubious expression towards the offended party in the room, callista can’t help but raise a brow towards him. “i find it hard to believe your family would invite this many people, camera, and crew without prior expectations of nosy people trifling through your things. i’d be less worried about little ol’ me on the hunt for a proper drink if i were you. i’m sure there are plenty of others with more nefarious intentions here.” a small huff of air escapes her as yet another cupboard disappoints.

“look,” she starts as she steps away, raising her hands defenselessly. “i’m not here to step on toes. i didn’t think anyone would be in here to witness — let alone someone like you — but have you seen how many people are out there?” the cameras, the introductions, the upcoming dinner...the thought sent a shiver down her spine. she’d never felt stage fright before but was almost positive that’s what had hit her the moment she’d seen them setting up the cameras. champagne certainly wasn’t going to cut it.

her whole attention shifts at the prospect of a wine cellar. finally; something that sounded promising. “yes,” she agrees, with a slight nod. “that would be a far more productive search.” a glance at the man she can safely presume, at this point, is one of the princes. not exactly the introduction she’d like but it’s a bit late to be back peddling now. “you know it’d be far more convenient and speedy if you could point me in that direction. all i’m after is a single bottle of merlot — you can follow if you don’t trust me. i’ll be in and out, then you can continue on with...whatever it was that i interrupted.”

( ☾ ) —- she wasn’t sure whether his nonchalance was all an act for the cameras or if this was his true personality but she made a note to tell the producers, as they could play-up his bad boy attitude for drama later in the show. ticking him off the list, she manages a smiles at him. ❛ ah, yes. i apologise for that, the staff have been busy with preparations and this slipped their mind. better late than never ! ❜ she chimes, a soft chuckle leaving her lips. he seemed to have many questions, and the smile never faltered as he fired them at her. with her signature customer service voice, she proceeds to answer them one by one. ❛ the cameras will definitely be everywhere ! however, you have the right to request some privacy. and cameras are not allowed in your private chamber. we want to show as much of the contestants’ lives at the palace as we can. ❜ his next comment catches her off guard, though should she have been surprised ? awkwardly chuckling in response, she tilts her head, ❛ do you have anymore questions ? ❜

“seriously?” that’s disheartening, hearing about the cameras. it’d certainly be a challenge trying to avoid them but anything worth doing never was easy. “how many cameras do you have exactly?” gray glanced about the room as if he could pick out any hidden cameras — didn’t see anything with the quick look but didn’t brush the idea off either. he’d take a better look later. waving his hand in an attempt to brush off the question, gray gives a sigh. “forget it, that’s information probably above your pay grade anyway. how much are they paying you to babysit? anything good? is it worth it?” not that he was interested in a job. plenty of money to be made in other ways — easier ways. “eh, i think i’m good,” he answers for a moment before stopping himself, raising a finger as if suddenly remembering something. “oh yeah. that dinner we’re supposed to go to later... is that formal? like suit and tie and shit? you guys wouldn’t happen to have one spare would you? i didn’t pack a tux.”

( ☾ ) —- first day on the job and she was already feeling overwhelmed. well, it wasn’t her first day on the job, per se. but months of preparation did not feel almost half as busy as it did today. from the arrival of all the contestants to the flurry of staff making sure everything would start off smoothly, eve was swept up in the festivities. ❛ excuse me.. ❜ she started to say, only for her supervisor to walk right past her, muttering into a walkie-talkie. something about a missing gown. everyone had a job and it seemed eve would have to find hers. with a clipboard in hand, she set out to introduce herself to the contestants. ❛ hi there. i’m eve !! i’m one of the personal assistants for the selection. i work closely with the producers and other staff behind the scenes to make sure this show will run smoothly. i’m doing a mandatory attendance check, would you mind giving me your name ? ❜

turning away from the end table full of knick-knacks, most of which looked pretty cheap anyway, gray raised a brow at the young woman before him, gaze running over her. she sounded like she was someone in charge but didn’t hold herself that way. whether it was just the busy rush of the first day leaving her tired or not, it didn’t really matter to him — but he made a mental note of it nonetheless. the less on-guard people were; the better. “an attendance check? sounds like something that should have been done at the front door.” a sigh as he leans back against the wall, arms folded over his chest. “kwon, gray kwon.”

it takes a moment for his brain to catch up with what she’s saying and he cocks his head as he brings his gaze back to eve. “you work with the producers and stuff, huh? so — the cameras, are they everywhere or what? any blind spots we should stay away from?” not exactly his intention but he was still fishing for information. “wanna make sure this face gets as much coverage as possible.”

“hmm?” it’s the first time someone’s approached her since the day had started. acadia had been doing her best keeping away from the contestants and crew but knew at some point she’d have to show her face. honestly, she wasn’t getting paid enough to deal with this but still attempted her best customer service smile. “oh sorry, i’m not sure what the rooming situation is. perhaps a host can point you in the right direction. my job is to look after palace residents, not contestants.” || @selectionstarters

“hopefully you’ve settled into your quarters nicely. now, i’m afraid i have a full schedule for the rest of the day, but i can squeeze in one quick tour of the grounds if you’d like,” rosalind greets with a pleasant smile, picture perfect and polished as usual. it’s an easy performance. “was there a particular room you’d like to see?”

“i’ll pass on the tour, thanks.” after all, he was fully intending to take his own private tour of the palace — keeping an eye out for any pocketable valuables that may or may not be too missed around a place as grand as this. “so that’s it?” he questions instead, eager to get to his own devices. “we just kill time until...they mentioned a dinner. is there a dinner bell? someone to get us? or should i just keep an eye on the clock?”

Displeased was perhaps the lightest way to phrase and describe what Prince Sebastian found himself feeling on this particular afternoon. As somewhat of a lifelong isolationist, the man hadn’t ever been fond of having anyone, even the most longstanding members of the palace staff, too far into his space. Sebastian enjoyed solitude, believing the company of others too tedious or too overbearing to find any pleasure in whatsoever. His participation in The Selection had certainly been a forced hand, one he was sure not to accept easily or without some sort of fuss.

Early in the morning, people had begun arriving in droves- camera folx, hosts, chefs, stylists, and those holding near any and every title in-between had descended upon the palace, the hustle and bustle beginning to irritate Sebastian’s very soul the moment it had begun. He’d sequestered himself to his quarters for the duration of the morning, refusing to come down even for breakfast to avoid exposing himself to more than he had to before he had to. That same refusal, however, had left him aggressively hungry and in need of sustenance, prompting what he promised himself would be the quickest trip imaginable to the palace kitchens.

“Under who’s orders are you to film my personal snack?” Sebastian near-spat at the camera crew member who’d manage to catch sight of his coattails as he booked it into the kitchen. “I demand you put that contraption down at once.” Though any other time the Prince would have been as charming as he possibly could have been, understanding the gravity of the camera placed upon him. However, in the moment he was nothing more than hungry and irritated. Hearing a second set of footsteps approaching from the kitchen’s entrance, he spun on his heel, taking in a breath as his eyes fell upon the other, narrowing near-instantly. “And who on Earth are you? What are you doing in my kitchens? I’ll sign no autographs, I’ll take no pictures, and I’ll engage in no pleasantries until I am utterly forced to do so. That time has not yet arrived!” The Prince grumbled, crossing his arms over his chest.

a quick blink as the voice resounding through the kitchen nearly the moment she stepped foot inside had callista stopping in her tracks, if only for a moment. she’d come wandering in for a reason after all, a goal in mind, and despite the tone of the man in the room it was still very much on the forefront of her mind. with the buzzing of activity going around and the unfamiliarity of the place, callista would stop at nothing for a proper glass of wine to settle her nerves.

“your kitchen?” she asks instead, eyes wandering about the room. “as in more than one?” a raised brow as her gaze, for a moment, goes back to the one grumbling. “what in the world do you need more than one kitchen for?” such a lifestyle — she’d be lying if she said she wasn’t a little envious.

moving forward, her next step is checking the tops of counters and opening cupboards here and there without shame or hesitation. “look, i’m just here for some wine. the good stuff — not the trash they’re handing out on platters out there. champagne,” a scoff from the woman as she continues her search. “how about some merlot? hell, even whiskey would have served for a better introduction.”
