the sound of the waves against the side of the ship should have been calming. but astrid had quite the love hate relationship with the water. so instead she tried to focus entirely on @atcmicwhispers. the soothing effect of the ocean around them was also lost when she was locked into a conversation about her and their partner cheating on each of them. with the other's partner. was this a soap opera from the early aughts? it was a mess to discover and even more to talk about. astrid may not be showing it directly, but rage cooked under her skin in a way that would make the water outside boil. "the way i see it-" she began after they took a breath, "-we've got a few options. some are more rational. we kick them out of the rooms or we move rooms. we cut all ties. we do the grown up thing." so not at all astrid's normal way. "or we get back at them for cheating. petty revenge."

cole had thought a cruise was such a romantic idea. when his girlfriend of a year had surprised him with a two-week cruise, he'd been flattered. he'd never had anyone put that much effort into a gift or plan a trip for them. he'd thought it was a good sign in their relationship. instead, it seemed to have been an elaborate ruse to get on the same ship as her apparent lover. astrid's partner. catching them red-handed had been like a punch to the gut and the only thing he could think to do in that moment was be anywhere else. but there were only so many places to hide on a cruise ship. "revenge?" he echoed, glancing at her. cole wasn't exactly an aggressive or vindictive person, but he was hurt and betrayed, and just a little curious. one could think that søren simply threw out these facts to show off his intelligence , or made a big deal out of it to make her feel better. sigrid had thought so at one point , during the first few months he desperately tried to win her over. now she knew that her husband simply couldn't help himself. that he loved sharing his knowledge with others. sigrid suspected it overjoyed søren to no end. the few times she'd added some anecdotes that he'd told her in passing his whole face had lit up like a christmas tree. "it also tastes good ," she couldn't resist but add , "but i agree. we're so happy you're chasing what you want." sigrid had to admit that she might've gone to extreme lengths to ensure that signe didn't feel pressured or forced into something she didn't love. she'd let signe try out hundreds of hobbies — sports , arts , languages. anything you could think of. she just didn't want her daughter to ever feel as constricted by her parents as sigrid had by hers. "oh , honey , don't mention killing. i fear that will wake your father up once again. and i think we all prefer you out of prison and here with us ," sigrid agreed matter-of-factly , smiling at the love and care shared between her two favourite people. "besides , you wouldn't do well in there , darling. best you just stay put." she hummed as she reflected over her daughter's question. "work is good. we're prepping for a new installation at the end of the month , so i'm scouting the last few details to make it all perfect." @st4nheight

søren let the conversation pass, watching the ebbs and flows as he relaxed back against the seat and twirled each bite around his chopsticks. with each mouthful he gently ran his fingertips across his beard, making sure that no sauce or stray scallions got caught in the mottled grey hair. growing up, his parents had always taught him that the world was his to conquer. not once did they tell him that his dreams were too much, that he should pursue a different track … two decades before, when they gazed upon the positive mark of a pregnancy test, one of their first discussions had been to raise signe like søren’s parents before him. free and relaxed, within reason.

despite their early ruling, though, signe was his baby girl, and that came with a certain desperation to protect her. with a mouth full of noodles, prompted by his wife’s sweet words, he raised a clenched fist and waved it in the air like an old man cursing the sun for shining. “i think i’d do great in prison. i have an in - built weapon,” although he wasn’t sure how he would keep up with his daily crosswords, his pathological need for coffee, and his twenty - five year addiction to sigrid holmström. “you know what your mamma is like. always downplaying the incredible work she’s doing. what i’ve seen of the installation is breathtaking already.” ever since they had met, søren had been his wife’s biggest cheerleader from the smallest, insignificant achievement to the most miraculous of milestones. “as for the hospital, it’s been … ” his chopsticks clinked noisily against the side of the bowl, “ … i’m thinking of taking a step back from the more surgical stuff. at least for a while.” @atcmicwhispers

signe was certain that if her parents loved anything nearly as much as they loved her, it was quietly championing one another. it showed in so many little ways — the way her father spoke of her mother's work as though she'd personally hung the moon, and the way her mother indulged his endless supply of medical facts with the kind of fond patience that only came from decades of loving someone exactly as they were. it always warmed her heart, serving as a shining example of what a partnership should look like.

"oh, i'm sure, pappa," signe said dryly, her lips twitching upward. "but what will happen when they cut off your coffee supply? i don't know if i'd be more scared for you or them." even now at twenty five and technically adult, signe couldn't help the warmth that settled in her chest at their praise. there had been a time, especially as a teenager, when she'd worried fashion was too frivolous to stand proudly beside medicine and academia. she'd spent years wondering if she wasn't doing enough, if she should want something bigger, more impressive. yet somehow, her parents had never let her feel small for loving beautiful things.

reaching for her drink, signe leaned back slightly before turning toward her mother, her expression brightening. "mamma, can i see pictures of the installation?" she asked. "pappa's right. you always undersell yourself, and then i see it and suddenly i'm questioning if i've ever actually understood art." her grin turned conspiratorial as she shot a quick glance toward her father, though the amusement softened quickly at the subtle shift in his voice.

the change caught her attention immediately. her brows pinched together as she looked back at him. she knew how much surgery meant to him — how deeply he cared about it — so hearing that he was stepping back from it sparked concern almost instantly. "what do you mean... taking a step back?" she asked carefully, eyes flickering briefly toward her mother as if trying to gauge whether this was news to her too. "just temporarily? or because you want to?" setting her glass back onto the table, signe shifted her full attention toward her father. "is everything okay, pappa?"

it was another reminder that sigrid hadn't been honest with her daughter. truth was , not talking about her mother protected sigrid just as much , if not more , than it did signe. signe hadn't met yang hanyu more than a handful of times , and the last time she couldn't have been more than six years old. sigrid never wanted signe to witness the humiliation her mother put her through. it would've been subtle at first , but the older signe got the easier it would be for her to see the signs. the few times søren had witnessed it had been awful , and it had driven sigrid to tears. looking at her daughter now , sigrid knew that the decision to cut her own mother off had been the right one. sigrid would never want for signe what she had been put through. "i made it sound more dramatic than it had to ," she stated with a small laugh , picking through her food. "it's mostly to do with our relationship … my mother never really appreciated the choices i made and i didn't want the life she had designed for me."

signe was quiet for a moment. her mind rifled through the memories of her childhood. the way her mother had always gone still whenever signe casually asked about her grandparents. no birthday calls or holiday cards. she'd never pushed too hard because even as a child, she could see that talking about them made her mother sad. her brows furrowed together as she picked at the skin around her nails. "she didn't approve of your choices?" she echoed, her tone slightly incredulous. not because she was judging sigrid, but she was genuinely confused by the idea. "like ... what? pappa? moving here? your work?" it was so hard to picture it when sigrid holmström had never mocked signe for changing interests or dismissed fashion as a shallow pursuit. even when signe had her own doubts, sigrid had always encouraged her to dream big and wildly. it was difficult to imagine that she hadn't received the same encouragement from her own parents.

the fire that had always burned within star was as bright as ever. david knew that it would. even when her circumstances had tried to dampen it she kept burning. it seemed as his words had been misunderstood , however , as he heard her heart beat faster in her chest and breath quicken rapidly. "star , you sound paranoid ," he replied patiently , as if talking to a child. they were so quick to come to conclusions , humans. "i would never hurt michael. or you. that was never what i wanted. you know that." he'd told her as much , before the end. he wanted eternity with her — with them both. it wasn't his fault that neither of them had wanted to see the truth for what it was. the smirk that had played on his lips grew wider , like a cheshire cat waiting to pounce. he took a step forward , into her fire. the years spent apart hadn't changed his mind. "are you worried , star ? we did have a special connection , michael and i. do you want him to yourself , is that it ?"

her eyes narrowed as he talked down to her as if she was unwell, or jumping to baseless conclusions. as if david had never given her any reason to fear. star may have not feared for herself, but she always feared for michael. he was a precious lamb that she had unwittingly led to slaughter. that was never what i wanted. it was true that david had encouraged her to take the final step with michael, to walk hand-in-hand to eternity, to david. but michael had a family that loved him, that cared for him. she couldn't pull him into the dark and michael refused to leave without her. "you didn't come all this way to make me jealous, david," she replied, her words sharp and biting as he stepped closer. she knew he wasn't exactly lying about his connection with michael, but it wasn't her place to name whatever it was. star stood her ground, her gaze locked on david's hypnotic one. flashing her brother a victorious smirk , she tossed it over. “i can’t say there’s a reason for anything in this apartment. all i know is that if you lose our holy water , you’re the one getting more.” edgar could try , but there was no chance in hell that alan would jeopardise his relationship with the priest in question. “maybe we should make an organised system so that we won’t have to spend an hour looking for the things we need.” alan pondered that statement for a moment before shaking her head in a chuckle. “nah , that sounds all sorts of fucked up. we’ve got vamps to kill.” at the mention of fishiness he jumped over to her brother , looking over his shoulder onto the old computer serving as their new home base. “luna bay ? that’s not too far from here. you think they’ve got a vampire problem ?”

"i told you already, i didn't lose it!" he huffed out, tossing a glare at alan over his shoulder. they needed to be strategic about how much of their holy water supply they used up because it wasn't exactly easy to get the stuff in the quantities they usually needed. edgar waded his way through the obstacles in their living room until he plopped himself in front of the old computer, whirring back to life as alan commented on building an organized system. he snorted loudly in amusement at the idea, tossing his sibling a look that said yeah right. they didn't have time for that nonsense. as alan came to read over his shoulder, edgar tapped on the screen pointing out to the several messages they'd been receiving regarding strange occurrences out in luna bay. humor had been more of a crutch than any physical mobility aid ever had been. søren needed it, depended on it — otherwise, what else was left but darkness ? throughout his recovery, the struggles that him and sigrid faced in the wake of the accident, he made even the doctors and nurses laugh as they attended his bedside. in that moment, though, the corners of his lips were downturned, and he looked every part the fifty - six year old man that he was. “there was something in the road. an animal, a blockage ... i don't remember. i swerved, and i lost control completely. the car flipped, and it rolled down a bank with such a force that the front ... well, it ... ” søren took a bracing breath. it had been twenty - five years and, even then, he felt a warmth climbing up his throat, a tightness in his chest, a ringing in his ears as if sirens were coming to take him away all over again. “the front of the car completely collapsed and took my leg with it, broke it so badly that mamma had to make a choice. the doctors asked whether she wanted to save the leg, or save me.” and every day since, he had been grateful that sigrid had been strong enough to make the decision. “it's bittersweet. if i had kept the leg, if they had tried to save it, i might not have ever got to meet you.”

"i'm glad mamma made the choice that she did," she admitted, her voice soft as her gaze was focused on his hand. these were the hands braided her hair for school, held her steady on her bike and pressed cool palms to her feverish forehead. signe swallowed a bit roughly, blinking her eyes to prevent them from welling up at the idea of not having had those hands in her life. her hands squeezed his as if trying to give back a fraction of the comfort they'd always offered her. "were you scared? after it was done. were you angry?"
