Despite a number of, honestly, fantastic actors whom have portrayed Hanni/bal through the years, I would like to point out how extremely varying they all are with their personalities.Â
Brian Coxâs version was so quick, so on top of everything Will was saying that if you werenât someone that was prepared, his Hanni/bal could have you in over your head so quickly that you wouldnât know what to do. You wouldnât even recall what you were saying and if you did, youâd begin to question. So quickly he latches on and sinks into you, like a leech. Manhunter is incredibly underrated and so is Brianâs performance as Lec/ter.Â
Anthony Hop/kins is ofc the honorable mention here. His version of Hanni/bal was much slower, like a creeping terror, but still had that mockery in his tone thatâs a shared trait between his version and Brianâs version; and in my opinion, the vibe that I get when reading the novels. Yet Anthony's wasnât as aggressive, not in the aspect of being blunt mind you. It was more of a slow roll, instead of immediately being abrasive. He took his time with Clar/ice, albeit that time was short. Still, his version was like a Tiger playing with itâs meal, before lurching down and going in for the kill.Â
Gasp/ard Ulli/el is incredibly unique all on his own because heâs the ONLY actor who has portrayed younger Lec/ter, kinda making his version unique all on its own. His brutality at moments held an incredible weight because he was able to contain the eloquent air that Lec/ter has naturally as a character. Again, itâs so hard to place him among the others in my opinion because he is suppose to be younger and isnât playing an imprisoned Lec/ter. Gasp/ard is an actor I thoroughly enjoy in general and even though time has gone on and itâs been, what ten years since the film, I would love to see him as Hanni/bal again.Â
Mads  Mikk/elsen, I mean, need I even mention him? In my opinion, his Hanni/bal was the hardest to read. Goddamn I loved it, because his motives, his emotions, his motives were so good, that youâd wait with baited breath to see what heâd do next. Because heâs the Hanni/bal weâve seen the most with the most screen time, I think we got to know him best. He was slow and melodic with everything he did, his voice alluring, entrapping you with his ideas and ideologies. And even though he still held many of the traits that weâve seen before, I would say he was the less aggressive, and that could have been mostly because he was hiding in plain sight. All the other Lec/ters were DEALING with events; whether it was a kind of revenge, or because of his current situation of being imprisoned.Â
All-in-all, every portrayal is fucking thrilling for me. I am shook every time they appear on screen. Unlike certain characters who have had a number of actors played the same character over the decades, Hanni/bal Lec/ter has ALWAYS had an amazing actor and never lacked the true UNF of the character. We should consider ourselves lucky honestly. Â
