153. Sadistic Music∞Factory
An...interesting song from the same producer as The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku, which on one hand checks out but on the other hand is somehow so much more unhinged.
It's a unique take on the meta/self aware Miku trope, featuring Miku as an entity that feeds off of the music people compose for her. Which is an interesting concept for a horror song, and the extra robotic tuning combined with cosmo's trademark super fast Miku vocals alongside the more techno-y sound definitely sell the vibe the song is going for.
It just...doesn't quite click for me. Something about the song just doesn't quite come together, in my opinion. Maybe it's the fact that, as creative and thematically appropriate as the tuning is, it ultimately just sounds kind of unpleasant to listen to. Maybe it's the fact that...it kind of sounds too cohesive, if that makes sense? It has a sound it's going for and it nails it, but it kind of just sticks to a very specific pitch range and that makes it ultimately sound kind of muddy.
I suspect I'm correct, because there's a remake, and the most obvious difference is the pitch range is much more dynamic.
Which...is a pretty substantial improvement, if I can be totally honest.
But in terms of the original...like a 6.5/10. Certainly not a bad song, and I can definitely respect what it's trying to do, but it has a pretty significant flaw holding it back. RIP to the rhythm game players, though.
152. Selfish Princess
Reminds me more than a little bit of Ashley's theme from the Warioware games. Not a bad thing since that song slaps.
It's a cute little song that nails that classic G-rated spooky vibe, and it has a nice kinda swingy beat. The instrumentation is solid and there's some fun bits like the part with the crows--sorry to mix my video game references, but some of the beats sound like they wouldn't be out of place in Rhythm Heaven.
Not the most substantial or memorable song, but definitely a fun one. 7.5/10
151. Daybreak Frontline
It's a lovely song with a great nostalgic vibe, but like with the other Orangestar song I've heard it doesn't quite click for me. Part of it is the instruments sounding a little synthy for my taste, part of it is the style itself not really doing it for me.
I'm still not sure how I feel about IA as a voicebank since I've still really only heard Orangestar use her. The way they tune her is kind of hard to distinguish from Miku's voice, though the verses of this song display a pretty nice sounding lower range from her. I think I'd like to hear that side of IA more, but it's no surprise at this point that I tend to prefer lower voices just kind of in general.
It's a perfectly solid song. It's fine. I just don't really feel much about it. 7.5/10
150. Bug
Kairiki Bear is always one of those producers I really want to like but who generally doesn't quite land for me, and this is a pretty strong example of the not landing.
It definitely does some interesting things. Their style always stands out and I always know I'm going to be in for a catchy and fun time despite the darker tone of the lyrics. I really like the hectic keyboard in the intro. But this song pretty quickly gets off on the wrong foot for me with the percussion, something about the instrument choice here really rubs me the wrong way. I've never heard a drum wheeze before. Then, Miku's voice...the tuning is overall pretty good, but it definitely gets a little higher than I prefer, especially in the chorus.
It's never a bad song, and my quibbles with it are definitely more personal taste than actual flaws, I just hate how often I'm disappointed in Kairiki Bear's work. 7.5/10
149. Lavie
Same producer as Junky Night Orchestra, similarly utilizing the high end of Len's range to portray a more feminine vibe--in this case, it's the theme song for the character Lovey from the Japan- and Taiwan-only gacha game #Compass which I will not be looking into further because that's a rabbit hole I do not care about. But the relevant point is he's an otoko no ko/male daughter/femboy vampire character.
I'm not really interested in getting into that trope and whether/when it's benign vs harmful, because it's 1. complicated, 2, kind of out of my wheelhouse since I am not transfeminine, and 3. another vaguely off topic rabbit hole outside of the scope of these reviews. (The song Rabbit Hole, meanwhile, ever looms in the distance, but we'll be getting to that, uh, someday.)
So, in terms of the song itself...I don't like it, lol. I mentioned in the Junky Night Orchestra review that I don't really like the producer's tuning style, even if it is both interesting and distinctive, and that's if anything even truer here. It doesn't help that the song is bouncy, frenetic, and annoying as hell. I can see how someone who likes that style of tuning and doesn't mind the style could find it to be a lot of fun, it's upbeat, energetic, and that's absolutely what it's going for, but it does not work for me. 6.5/10
148. Kami no Kotoba
A lovely, haunting song. Miku dark's soft vocals are a perfect fit for the song's vibe. The instrumentals, especially the keyboard, are very strong and verge on overpowering the song at times, but I think it overall works very well for the effect the song is trying to achieve
The static at the end hurts my ears, but it's a cool effect and I get what it was going for. Overall, it definitely has an unsettling vibe that definitely feels a little internet horror, in a good way. 8.5/10
When trying to find the song, it's pretty hard to ignore that there's a human vocal cover by Luschka that has significantly more views/reuploads than the original Vocaloid version.
And...I kind of see why. As noted, I do think Miku dark was the perfect voicebank for the original, but the vocal cover is kind of insane.
But...in a way, that's the beauty of Vocaloid. The original versions absolutely have a ton of artistic merit in their own right, but seeing the human vocal covers that they inspire and the new life they have within the community is super inspiring.
Kind of sad for the original producer in this case, though.
147. Cyber Thunder Cider
This is my first time reviewing a song using the VY1 voicebank, and due to the style used, I feel like I still don't really have a great grasp on their voice.
Honestly, that's fine, because it's a really interesting style. It does get a litlte lost in the sauce in terms of its use of techno effects, but it's overall a pretty cool song with a really interesting vibe. Definitely feels a bit experimental, but I like it.
This song is apparently the most well known work from the late producer EZFG, who passed away from appendiceal cancer earlier this year. It's a strong legacy, and I can definitely see why he's so missed.

146. Fire◎Flower
Super interesting tuning on Len here. It's definitely more than a little bit dated, but it goes substantially deeper in his range than most songs do, and...if I'm being completely honest, I kind of like it.
I wish I could say I liked the rest of the song as much. It's kind of a standard pop-rock ballad. It's competently made, if a bit dated, and I can definitely see why halyosy is one of the original Vocaloid greats. But...like I've said before, I'm not a big fan of ballads
Still, it's nice. 7.5/10
It does have a couple of remakes. This is the most recent one, and I honestly do quite like it.
145. MKDR (DSCF)
For a deco*27 song that came out the same year as Ghost Rule and Hibana, this song pleasantly surprised me. It feels reminiscent of his older stuff...albeit with his more recent tuning, which is kind of the one main drawback to the song. Still, it's a solid pop-rock song, no frills, not as overproduced as his newer stuff...it definitely falls into the territory of the kind of deco*27 song that appeals to me more.
I've kind of put myself in an awkward situation with how I review deco*27 songs. This one feels like an 8.5 to me...but that's also what I gave Ghost Rule, which I do like less than I like this one. I feel like if I was reeviewing Ghost Rule now, I'd drop it to like an 8, based off of how I've reviewed other deco songs? Then again, I gave Vampire an 8, and Ghost Rule definitely should be higher than that... And admittedly, my take on Ghost Rule was basically "I would really like this song if it either used a voicebank other than Miku or just was tuned differently." And I guess in that respect, this song having the same rating makes sense...overall I do like this song more than Ghost Rule, but the qualities of Ghost Rule that appeal to me are more to my taste than this one and so in the end they come out to about the same. Does that make any sense? Eh, it's all kind of arbitrary anyway.

135. Hated By Life Itself
Out of all of the Vocaloid songs I've heard that are either explicitly about suicide/suicidality or otherwise touch on those themes--and there have been many, as I've discussed on here before there are so many Vocaloid songs about suicide--I feel like this is the one that has felt the most emotionally resonant to me.
It's not just about suicide. In fact, while it addresses suicide, it arguably isn't directly about that at all. "In truth, I couldn't care a bit if I died," we hear Miku sing, but she never directly expresses a wish to die. It's more of a middle ground state, that thing where you're passively suicidal but not necessarily with any active suicidal intent.
Like I said in my review of Gehenna...I can relate to that more than I'd like to admit.
Rather than being about suicide directly, though, it's more of a philosophical exploration of death, the world and its attitudes towards violence, the experience of being depressed, and the world just kind of being awful sometimes. Which is definitely as relatable now as it was in 2017.
Even if we don't care if we live or die and the world around us sucks, we stay alive because the people around us would be sad if we died, and we would also be sad if they died. Even in a hostille world, even if we will all die someday, even if that day might be tomorrow, we live on.

144. Death Should Not Have Taken Thee
An elaborate "Len dies" joke, set in what appears to be a series of songs by this producer starring the Kagamines as characters in a fantasy RPG.
It's definitely a gimmick song and more than a little silly, but the joke is decently funny and strong enough to carry this song at least. The song is upbeat and well produced and the chiptune elements are pretty fun, the tuning is solid, and there's some pretty clever and funny writing in the lyrics--the big standout line being "More shameful than thy death is thy sass."
It's a solid song and got a chuckle out of me, but I don't know if I'd say I like it or that it's a strong enough gimmick to carry multiple songs. But for this one, it deserves at least a 7.5/10 for sure.
143. Hmm, Ah, Ah
Some of these song titles should be absolutely unsearchable (thinking also of Hmm, Ah, Yes), and yet Vocaloid finds a way. (And anyway, they have nothing on that genre of songs with no title at all that just randomly find their way into your Youtube recommendations. You can't find them. You simply have to be chosen.)
Pretty interesting song. I like the more swingy vibe, and the chorus is pretty catchy. The whispered vocal tuning is unique and distinctive and makes the song memorable...unfortunately a little bit to its detriment for me, it's very...ASMR, and ASMR tends to have the opposite of its intended effect for me. Basically, I want to like this song and I respect what it's trying to do, but it makes my skin crawl. The ending is fun though. 6.5/10
142. Turkish March - It's Over \(^o^)/
Decently cute meme song--not the most substantial, but relatable enough and memorable. 6.5/10.
However.
By mistake, in my initial review, I ended up pulling up a different version of the song with a very different video. I think I was looking for a higher quality upload and somehow missed that it was also using a later version of Miku's voicebank.
Anyway, this is the version I ended up covering in my rough draft, which explains why that version of the review was just "What."
141. Love Words
A classic deco*27 song. To the point that I'm pretty sure I actually heard it Back In The Day, even though I didn't really go out of my way to listen to Miku back then.
He's made several sequel songs since then. I'm going to hold off on listening to/reviewing any of those for the time being since I wouldn't be surprised if some of them are on the list for later. On its own, though...it's really cute. It's not really a secret that I prefer deco's earlier stuff, even if his like two Gumi songs have always been more my thing than the Miku stuff, and it hits that great early deco balance of being a solid production while still being rough around the edges in a way that really has a certain charm to it.
It's just a great feel-good pop song. 8.5/10
140. Failure Girl
Another song to add to the "if you really related to this song, I hope you're doing better now" pile.
Kairiki Bear tends to add in an awkward place for me. Their style is really distinctive. It's funky and fun and they're great at making high energy bops with dark lyrics, an evergreen genre of Vocaloid music. Their songs are consistently good...but somehow typically don't quite make it to great for me, and I don't really know why. I feel like it's...it's like, it's not that their songs sound similar, necessarily, but something about them just registers as indistinct from each other in my mind. Solid listens, but I don't know if I would be able to remember which one is which. Though I do like Miku's tuning in this one. 8.5/10.
Maretu did a cover/remix of this one which I'm holding off from reviewing for now on the off chance it turns out to be on the list but it's a solid improvement imo.
139. The First Sound
Another really early Miku song.
In that regard, I can acknowledge its importance. It's a cute song, and the keyboard is kind of nice...but I'm not really a fan of Miku's tuning--it's certainly fine by the standards of the era but doesn't fully hold up imo--and the song just ultimately kind of feels lacking in substance for me.
Not a bad song by any means, just a relic of its era. I'm glad to have heard it for its place in Vocaloid history, but I probably won't go out of my way to listen to it again. 6.5/10
