Like a decade ago I started my monthly periods,I was excited and so was my mum.She had even saved some extra 100 bob somewhere waiting for the day she would get me my first sanitary towel.I was so happy but at the same time scared, you know this is something foreign. My mom bought me 2 packets of sanitary towels retailing at 50 Ksh shillings each, which I was to go for 2 months but unfortunately I had a heavy flow and used the two packets and did not inform my mum. Coming the second month the periods came very early in the morning. As usual I had to tell my mum, but she didn’t have the cash for a sanitary towel that morning ,so she advised I use a tissue and a piece of cloth, I mean I had to,because there was no other option! I could not ask my dad either because you know that was a taboo by then as much as I was close to my dad. So I used the tissue and a piece of cloth and carried an extra one for change,I left for school but I was feeling so uncomfortable. Then something happened! during break time as I was going for a short call. The tissue and the piece of cloth had fallen down and my inner pants stained, but I didn’t feel or know where they fell.I was so stressed about it, I went all round the school to look for them, I couldn’t stand the Shame Incase Someone saw them fall down.I looked every where I had stepped but I couldn’t find the piece of cloth with the tissue stained in blood.I was so stressed and had to fake sickness so that I could go home sleep and hide myself. I have never shared this story with anyone until today ! As we celebrate menstrual hygiene today I want to applaud individuals and organizations that are making sure girls in the slums are supplied with the sanitary towels as they maintain a proper hygiene because not so many families can afford to buy them especially during this pandemic.
