At Halloween last year, the tiniest little girl dressed as one of the Folk came to my door. There's an increasingly magnificent native beautyberry to one side of my stoop, with its marvelous electric purple berries served up in great tumbles, and she was transfixed by it. She got her candy, I complimented her costume, she started down the stairs, and then stopped, and turned back around. Her: "Are those for-eating berries?" Me: "Oh, you are so smart and clever for asking first! That is such a good idea, I'm so impressed! These are Callicarpa, called beautyberry, and they are edible. Usually they are for cooking, though, to make syrup or jam, and they're not very nice right off the bush. But they are a food berry, and you're so smart to ask!" Her: "Can I...try one?" Me: "If your mother says you may." Her mother, from the walk: "Are you SURE, like, 100% sure. That those are food." Me: "A hundred percent sure, ma'am. The Girl: *waits for her mother's nod, then gently reaches out and takes three very small berries and puts them into her mouth* The Girl: *makes an inquisitive face as she chews, walking down the path toward her mother* Me, turning back inside: "Husband, you should have seen this very smart little girl just now!"

That is going to be less so going forward," she said. Milanesi envisions AI-enabled search and agents proposing products to consumers — perhaps even those they have requested — but with less clarity or choice around where it's coming from. "If you're going to say: 'I want a pair of Jordans, go find them,' you're not necessarily sure what steps have been taken and whether the AI has used a source or a store that was paid for and therefore came up in the search results," she said, "or if AI actually went and did their due diligence and picked the best for me as a customer."

While Google already has “AI Mode,” the company will now power the whole search bar through its new Gemini 3.5 Flash model.  Instead of the classic list of blue links, Google Search will now also generate a custom page with an AI-generated summary of what you’re searching about, which will then trigger a conversation with AI Mode on the main page, allowing users to ask follow-up questions—similar to the kind of layout you would see when opening ChatGPT.

This is a really good point/set of points. I've gone on and on before about why most women wouldn't have been that bothered by their corsets so I don't want to bother rehashing it, but this is the flipside of that aspect.

It really, really is not inherently a problem to have your character(s) not like the feeling of wearing a corset. But it is bad writing to repeatedly use the same cliché characterization. If you're determined to go with this, don't just be like "well she's too free-spirited and modern" and call it a day (and if you do see this cliché criticized, please stop accusing the critics of being dumb misogynists, it just makes you look like you don't know enough about the historical genre to be aware that it's a cliché).

you can use not liking corsets to say something about your character! You just have to get past the idea that not liking corsets is a default state of any woman with a brain!

Even if she dislikes them on principle or for proto-feminist reasons, there has to be something about the sensation of them that she finds impeding to her life (which not all women did). Is it about difficulty bending at the waist, and if so, what about her life means that she needs to bend at the waist so badly and hasn't adapted her wardrobe to do so? Is she making and selling a patented corset alternative and therefore has a financial as well as possibly a philosophical stake in the question? Does she wear one of the many alternatives that were on the market in real life? Does she not experience any particular discomfort from corsets, but has a purely principled objection to them? If so, why? What does she think women should do for breast support instead? Or is she very small breasted and doesn't understand the discomfort many women experience in going without support? 

you could do a lot with this if you weren't falling back on the tired old "well, obviously anyone worth listening to would dislike them because they're corsets and corsets are evil torture devices!" Shorthand

Hey anyone notice how google translate is being pretty liberal with their translations as of late? Takin some real liberties to infer tone.

ask and ye shall receive: When I write in Japanese I usually also throw it in google translate to double check that I'm not using the wrong kanji by mistake, and two years ago it gave me very dry and literal translations.

I was doing it today and noticed it had a pretty strong voice added to the output

For reference, to give a dry translation I would put: Lately I'm into in Hanafuda. Nobody seems to know anything about it here, so they probably wouldn't understand my brilliant jokes. I guess you guys will never be able to understand "Mister November and the Scary Cave".

I have a fluent friend who is able to check my work for me and give me tips on hitting the correct tone (I was going for a comically casual feeling), so I'm confident that I'm expressing the feeling I'm intending. While Google is also hitting the same emotion, I really don't like knowing that it's assigning tone in the first place.

To check if it was editorializing based on informal grammatical choices, I formal'd up the writing to be more polite and remove any non-standard vocabulary.

I'm just like... what is anyone who is translating what I'm thinking into their own language going to think when a translation app decides that it knows my intended tone? When online communication is already so complicated and nuanced? I'm a non-native so I'm spending ages agonizing over 117 characters, but when I'm chatting in English I'm not being so deliberate. How likely is it that tools that 'naturalize' are going to make choices that don't reflect reality and lead to insulting misunderstandings? I spoke with an English learner just yesterday who thought they were being bullied (they were not, the commenter in question was just excitedly infodumping about sociology) because something was lost in translation, and I wonder if it's because of tools making choices like this. I'm just a luddite I don't trust stuff like this. stinks of ai asking me if it can rerwrite my email in a more quirky style.
