my take on the castiel confession that might be a little, uh, spicy for some:
it shouldn't have happened. neither should all the queerbaiting, the homophobic/biphobic/mysogynistic/etc. jokes. as the seasons go on the content wains in quality, entertainment, and originality to the point of being shockingly inauthentic of its own original content; almost copying itself somehow. this isn't really the hot take, but this is:
we have to stop talking about the show. stop posting whether it's positive or negative. stop making memes. stop showing even a modicum of support. you cannot claim to be affronted by outright homophobia and yet continue to do all of the exact things which bring these shows into popularity. just because it is "ending" does not mean they will stop making money. doesn't mean the writers, producers, and actors will not benefit from their work on the show & go on to spread their casual hatred masked as entertainment in other ways.
you can adore the show, in your heart, acknowledging its flaws and its successes. you can do that. if you still love supernatural, you are 100% valid. but every post or tweet or fanedit you make is actively benefiting the very people who have been unapologetically making this content for literal years. the more you use the name of the show, the actors, and the characters; the more that you get these things trending, regardless of what exactly you are talking about-- it is not only benefiting the creators, but also showing the lgbt community how little you take our issues seriously. it is not difficult to be an ally. writers, producers, and actors alike all have to actively make a choice to be homophobic, racist, hateful in their content. So Many People read and/or write those scripts and don't say anything about it. it is not hard to be considerate. the tv & film industry is extremely cuthroat, sure, but the more we allow them to get away with it, the less pressure they will feel to make the effort to change. these things will not change if we do not advocate for it as the consumers. afterall, supply cannot exist without demand.
so, yeah. i get that what they did is laughable, and it may not seem like a big deal to some, even to some ppl in the lgbt community-- but what truly enrages me is that i know how easy it is to avoid having hateful content, just like i know how easy it is to cast poc, disabled actors, nd actors, and trans actors in tv/film and yet every show, movie, miniseries, whatever-- it is all just full of cishet, able-bodied, nt white people and any actors who do not fit that are typically playing mistreated characters.
please remember that everyone involved in creating Supernatural, as a whole, for the entire duration of the show's existence, has chosen to ignore these issues. and by you not taking it seriously or even ignoring it, you are signaling to them and other creators that it is okay, too.
again, you are allowed to enjoy art that has flaws, but being critical of something you enjoy is not the same as pretending flaws are just jokes. these things hurt real people, even if not you personally. think of the ways the shows you grew up with shaped you. now apply that to people who are having the hatred they are taught reinforced by everything they see.
