Seriously though, mike.curtin is a one man band that plays a heavy brand of math rock, almost psychedelic. Intrincate and beautiful yet head-splattering. The fact that Mike is a self-taught instrumentalist makes it even more impressive.

Reseña. Mike.Curtin - Indecisive Euphoria. Atlas Records (2012)

Indecisive Euphoria es el primer EP del multinstrumentalista de Nueva Jersey Mike Curtin. Este es un EP de mathrock que tiene tanto guiños con la musica llena de texturas y facil de escuchar de Foals como con la violencia y pesadez del género hermano Mathcore. El EP nos recibe con una guitarra rápida con el ritmo extraño que caracteriza al Mathrock y con una voz cantando sobre todo el lio que tienen las guitarras, avanza un poco la canción y se escucha una guitarra acústica tocando melodias que recuerdan a una guitarra clásica. Desde esta pieza se puede descubrir la formula que se va a repetir por el resto del EP que son riffs de guitarras pesadas y rapidas intercaladas con guitarras creando texturas que recuerdan a la banda Foals. La segunda cancion “Plotless set of points” es una cancion de muy poca duracion - apenas cincuenta y cinco segundos - que al acabar se siente como si estubiera incompleta, cosa que tambien se aprecia en otras canciones de “Indecisive Euphoria”. Luego viene la tercera cancion, “Hey (Bass Heavy)” que es la pieza que se acerca mas al género mathcore de todo el EP. En esta cancion oimos ambos guitarrazos llenos de distorcion como guitarras punteadas que crean texturas sobre. La cuarta toma “Pay with feeling” usa de nuevo la formula de intercalar riffs pesados con guitarras que crean texturas y tambien se aprecia de nuevo una pequeña sección con sonido de guitarra clasica. La penultima pieza es la primera canción donde se le dan descansos a la música de la priza que tenia hasta ese momento, también cuenta con voces con efectos y lo demas suena como los cortes pasados del disco. El EP llega a su fin con “Saxual Salvation” que logra destacarse del resto de las canciones por el uso de un saxofón recordando al album “Antidotes” de la banda de Oxford ya antes mencionada, y por la desaceleracion que la cancion sufre a la mitad, para despues acabar abruptamente. En mi opinion este es un muy buen primer EP y una excelente presentación de un músico que podria hacer grandes cosas en el futuro, la unica falla que le encuentro es que las canciones son muy parecidas una de la otra lo que resulta algo cansado y que hay pocas variaciones o detalles que puedan hacer que uno de sus cortes sobresalga de los otros.

Putting some finishing touches on the Tiny Moving Parts CDs. It feels really great to be part of all of this.

John had to glue his eyes to his monitor and make a handful of phone calls and Chris is adding the inserts and double checking everything tonight to make sure we have these in time for the Tiny Moving Parts show tomorrow.  From that point on, you will be able to purchase physical copies of "This Couch is Long and Full of Friendship" from the band at any point on their tour, and Zach will be helping make sure everyone who can't make it to a show will be able to get their hands on one another way (stay tuned for more info on that).
