My kid’s about to be born, John. Maybe I’m done being careful.
thechsenones:
She stopped smoking when he said she didn’t have to do this any longer. That she was brainwashed. She had to stay with the Remnant. She found peace with the Remnant, despite having things thrown at her or being shoved off of curbs or into walls.
Her hand furiously wrote on the pad of paper, her lip actually trembling with emotion. Renata hoped that he didn’t see it — she hoped that her partner didn’t either. The Remnant wasn’t supposed to express feeling, not like the way she was now.
“ you don’t understand. you could come see it. “
At least she stopped smoking. Atlas didn’t mind the smell of cigarettes, but when Ren was doing it for the GR, it felt wrong. She wasn’t smoking because she wanted to, she was doing it because they told her to.
He huffed as she started writing again, trying to ignore the stab of guilt that shot through him at the clear display of emotion on her face. Atlas was a blunt guy, and he’d been angrier since the Departure, but he never wanted to upset Ren. He just wanted her back, wanted her to be herself. Reading the paper, he shook his head. “No,” he said. “No, I’m not going to do that. I don’t want to see that shit. I don’t want to see the people they send to follow me down the street. I want them to leave me the hell alone. How about relaying that message?”
ariadnedavis:
“I get it. I think I would kick some asses if I found out you or Fee were being harassed like that. And y’all can cover your own asses better than a girl can, even if you can’t fight back.”
“So how long have you liked her like that?” Ariadne didn’t know for sure if he actually did like Renata like that — but hell, it was worth a shot to be nosy.
“See? It’s tempting, you know?” Atlas couldn’t stand seeing someone he cared about in trouble, even if he didn’t agree with what Ren was doing with the GR. He understood wanting to fight the cult, but Ren? Ren didn’t deserve that shit. “Shit, I’ll always fight back. You know that.” That was one of the many reasons he never would have made it in the GR, even if he’d wanted to join. He couldn’t let anyone walk over him.
At Ari’s question, Atlas faltered. “Like what? She’s my best friend. Or she was, anyways. I’m not sure what she is now.”
roxieelvin:
“Not again. Fuuuck…” Roxanne had knocked a tray of glasses clean off of the bar and made a huge mess on the floor. Sometimes she wondered just how one person could be so clumsy, but apparently she managed it. Huffing with immense frustration, she dodged the biggest shards of glass and went to grab a brush to sweep the debris away.
Hearing the door close and the padding of footsteps, she shouted from behind the bar as loudly as she could. “Be careful where you walk - there’s broken glass all over the floor! My bad!”
Atlas limped into the bar, pausing in the doorway at the sound of cursing and the shattering of glass. After a moment, he walked the rest of the way into the bar, stopping to watch the bartender stare at her mess. “I’m not great at careful,” he joked, closing the distance between himself and the bar to get a better look at the broken glass. “You need help cleaning all this up?”
ariadnedavis:
“I know you probably better than anyone here. Apart from her. You’d totally lose your shit, man. Tell me with a straight face that you wouldn’t kick someone’s ass because they were harassing her,” Ariadne said, half-serious, half-not.
“Of course not. The Tinder selection always dies off around Heroes Day.”
She was right, and Atlas knew it. With Lara gone, Ren knew him best, but Ari was a close second. He wanted to continue denying it, wanted to insist that he wouldn’t lose it, but he knew Ari would see right through it. “I don’t like seeing her get harassed,” he allowed with a shrug. “There’s nothing wrong with that.”
He snorted at her statement, shaking his head. “Guess all these posters reminding everyone that the world kind of sucks do keep their pants on.”
thechsenones:
“not a cult. we help. they help me.”
She looked beside her to her partner, who just kept taking long drags off her cigarette. Renata followed in action, putting her pad of paper in the back pocket of her white pants. She pulled a pack of her own cigarettes out, placing one between her lips.
“They didn’t help you. They brainwashed you,” Atlas snapped. He’d almost forgotten her partner was there, almost forgotten that the GR traveled in pairs. He shot the woman a glare for good measure, rolling his eyes as Ren took a drag of her cigarette. “You don’t have to do this shit.”
ariadnedavis:
“Good. ‘Cause I know the second you saw Ren there you would’ve lost your shit. And don’t even try to pretend that you wouldn’t,” Ariadne said, shaking her head. “Want me to spend it with you? So you don’t get all gung-ho about going?”
“What? No I wouldn’t,” Atlas insisted, but he knew she was right. Seeing his (former?) best friend among the Guilty Remnant was never easy, and it almost always ended badly. He wasn’t good at it, wasn’t skilled in seeing someone he loved, knowing they were in pain, knowing someone was using them, and doing nothing about it. Unfortunately, the things he usually ended up doing were never productive. “You don’t have someone better to hang out with?” His voice was teasing.
thechsenones:
Renata didn’t want to be assigned to Atlas. She cared for him deeply and she knew that this was going to hurt him. She followed every order she got, however, knowing that it was all for the greater good. Everything they did in the Guilty Remnant was for the greater good. The brunette looked at him blankly, before looking down at the pad of paper she had in her hands.
“ if friends, join g.r. ”
The writing was fast and sloppy, but she wanted to make her point across as fast as possible.
Atlas leaned over, reading the paper. The moment the words registered, he was leaning away from her again, groaning and running a frustrated hand through his hair. Join GR. Like it was a simple, logical solution. “Are you kidding me, Ren? I’m not going to join a cult to make you feel better.” His words were harsh and angry, but there was a level of exhaustion beneath it all. The truth was, Atlas was tired, and he missed his friend. He’d never join the cult, but he intended to get her out of it. “Why don’t you leave it? If we’re friends.”
ariadnedavis:
“It’s just a parade, man. I mean, a totally pretentious one that I think that are just gonna have those weird Remnant people pop out to mess with everyone, but still.” Ariadne frowned, looking her friend over. “You gonna be cool?”
“It’s just giving them a bigger crowd of people to bother,” Atlas muttered, clearly still annoyed. He sighed as he glanced over at Ari, lifting a shoulder and dropping it in a half-assed shrug. “I’m gonna be at home,” he replied. “I’m not wasting my time with this shit.” He wasn’t sure it was true. He’d always had trouble staying out of trouble, even when he knew it was trouble. Especially when he knew it was trouble.
@thechsenones
He felt her behind him long before he saw her. Ren’s presence had always been a familiar one but, since she’d joined up with the GR, it was less positive than it had once been. Atlas tensed as he felt her approach, turning to face her with a scowl. “They’ve got you on me today, do they? You’re really okay with this? Following me around and harassing me? I thought we were friends, Renata.”
Heroes Day. Atlas rolled his eyes at the poster, half-tempted to tear it down. Instead, he just scoffed, glancing over to the person next to him. “Every year they do this shit I spend half the day waiting for the punch line,” he muttered.
› [ SEAN TEALE ] ┊ BRANDON “ATLAS” RILEY ― This 26-year-old RETIRED AIR FORCE PILOT DID lose someone in The Sudden Departure. He’s lived in this town for 7 years and IS a risk of the Guilty Remnant.
Rules were never something Brandon Riley was good with. In school, he was in constant trouble for bending and breaking every rule he came across, and no amount of punishment ever seemed to deter him. It was only his girlfriend, Lara, who could really reign him in. Unlike Brandon, Lara was far more willing to follow the rules as they were set out for her. They seemed an unlikely pair, but they worked.
When Brandon joined the Air Force, no one who knew him expected him to succeed. He was too wild, too unwilling to conform. For a while, Brandon proved them all wrong. He became a renowned pilot, gaining the callsign Atlas and making a name for him throughout the Air Force. Unfortunately, it couldn’t last. When he disobeyed an order he didn’t like, he crashed his plane. While no one was killed, Atlas was critically injured and lost his leg. He was discharged from the Air Force and moved to Ashgrove with Lara, who he had proposed to shortly after high school.
Without the Air Force to keep him busy, Atlas became restless. His relationship with Lara began to deteriorate, and he found himself feeling trapped in the engagement instead of in love the way he’d once been. When the Departure happened and Lara vanished, he found himself more relieved than mournful. The feeling filled him with guilt, but he couldn’t help it.
