I made some shadow puppets for a show I did recently, and finally got pictures so I can share them! I really enjoyed figuring out how to express what I was thinking with just a silhouette, and how to make the puppet in a way that’s structurally stable and can move as intended.

This is my baby, the hydra. There are five single heads, and then the three attached. On the single heads, the neck is a fabric tube, which the puppeteer’s arm would go through. Then there are two straps used to keep the head in place. On the combined, it’s just fabric strips attached to the head and a dowel, which is attached to the wood. The puppeteer just holds the plank.

These are two of the people. I had fun figuring out the girl’s design.

This is a hospital bed. I didn’t make the bed, but I made the pillow and girl’s head. It was hard to find a position that looked realistic but also made it easy to tell what it was supposed to be.

The apple tree was pretty simple. We had an apple puppet, so I copied that for the cutout.

R2-D2 and C-3PO were tricky. I couldn’t make them super big because of how close they had to be to the light. But they’re also so detailed, it was hard to choose which features to include.

I didn’t make this one, but I repaired it too many times. I eventually took a coat hanger and bent it to fit the necks, so that they’d have more stability.
