a year ago, zhang yuehua had a vision. it had blossomed into a plan; the type that was meant to be long term. because a year ago, when love still looked rosy behind the glass, lua believed she and jisung would outlast the longeviety expectancy for a relationship like theirs.

and for a time, they were lucky.

their respective group members were supportive, and so were the fans. the managements hadn't demanded much from their relationship; only that they do not let it affect their careers.

well, it was a strange form of reverse psychology.

and now that lua looks back on it, maybe she should have knocked on wood (could it still work now? or does it only apply upon immediate recitation?). or, perhaps the relieved sigh she'd exhaled after letting the world know she was in love came too soon.

lua isn't in the right space for hypotheticals. all she had on her hands right now was a scenario that she'd become familiar with during the past five months.

“one dinner, jisung. all i asked was for you to spend time with me before we get so busy again.” she calls out the elephant in the room again. “i had it all planned out, even asked you to save the date so you won't forget.”

jisung tries to plead his case, hopelessly gesturing to his phone. “and i did, it's right there on my reminders. but you know what it's like when you have that bout of inspiration, you write one idea then it spirals, and then—”

“—you forget your girlfriend's waiting for you, hoping you'll show up this time. then when she realizes you're not going to, she crashes into your studio and starts this fight again.” she snaps, “i know, jisung. this isn't the first time we've ended up like this, remember? or was it the deadlines that made you forget that too?”

and despite it being futile, jisung weakly argues, “i texted you, didn't i?”

yeah, he did.

only after an hour of sitting at the table she'd reserved specifically for what would have been their private moment, he'd let her know that he would be running late again.

the silence falls upon the couple, loosely binding them together.

both of them know this script. neither were permanently assigned to a role because at one point, maybe two, lua too had let their relationship down.

and neither were solely to blame, not when both idols were tethered to relationships that regularly expected and demanded too much from them. but someone had to peel the band-aid..

“is this it? is this where we end up?”

lua still looks at jisung with love in those sad eyes. because that's the truth—she loves this man. despite the exhaustion that'd become a regular in their relationship, she adores him. and even at their worst, she reminds him of that.

“i love you, jisung.” she says it with conviction, with his face cupped in her palms, and her mind recommitting every part of him to memory. “maybe i always will. but right now, we need to set each other free, before what we have becomes something we can't save.”

and jisung closes his eyes, sucks in a shaky breath. because she's right; between the two of them, she usually was.

when he opens them again, tears gather upon his lashes. a few rebellious ones fall, only to be swiped away by lua's tender touch, replaced by the gentle kisses she sets on his cheeks.

he leans in and kisses her, just to feel the buzz that jumps his heart one more time. jisung murmurs against her lips, “please don't forget about me.”

“never, i could never forget you.” she swears to the fragments of his fragile heart.
