journal rant/putting thoughts into the universe for myself

i really don't know where im at in life but it's less scary than i thought.

one of the biggest contenders in this is my ideas of subculture and the importance of following the aesthetic areas of said subculture. my first ever punk show and goth club attendance was January + March 2023 respectively. i felt very connected to the styles because of my extreme anger with the government and things happening in the world (plus i was old enough to be going to these things frequently), i saw it as a way to connect with like-minded people. and don't get me wrong: it did! I've met some wonderful people that im very happy to call my friends.

however; things have changed in the scenes themselves. "Kill all rapists" unless it's your friend, "punch Nazis" until a Nazi is in the room with you, etc. nobody actually DOES anything to back their words up. everyone shows up to the shows just for music, and the music barely reflects anything anymore. when i had gone to a protest that everyone had been posting about, only 7 people from that area showed up. benefit shows are a rarity. i felt as though this subculture was digging itself in a hole to a very, very quick halt.

well recently, i tested something out. i stopped going to shows and only visited the club when there was a group that wanted to go, i started wearing browns and neutral colors with jeans, i dyed parts of my hair my natural color, and i started hiking with friends. i signed up for some local organizations that clean trash from the environment and have been sorting all my items to see what i can donate or sell. in the small amount of time i looked elsewhere and stopped applying a uniform, I have done more aid for my community and environment than was ever offered to me during my time frequently going to shows. the people with their natural hair and an old, worn T-shirt, khaki jeans who cleans the trash off mountains and checks in on their old neighbor and forms community around them is a million times more punk than the person with studs covering their jacket with a mohawk who calls people "poser."

the aesthetic-ification of subcultures is killing them. there's no point in dressing those ways because the people who LIVE those styles don't even practice what they preach. it used to be a way of knowing who thought what, but i guess that went out the window.

it's really frustrating

excuse me for stating the obvious but like. james gunn outright calling superman an immigrant and doubling down on it when he got backlash (because he IS an immigrant, that's the point of superman) + the in-movie dialogue of "aren't you going to read me my rights?" "you're an extraterrestrial, son. you haven't got any rights to read." + the violence of his arrest and how they torture and mistreat him unapologetically, all under the guise of "protecting america", in a film releasing during the onslaught of violent ICE kidnappings and abuse... yeah it's really no wonder right-wing knobheads are crying about this being woke. they're being forced to look directly at the reasons one of the most well-known and beloved heroes of all time would not be on their side. and that's only ONE of the reasons this movie covers
