Updateeee
A few weeks ago some weird new creature moved into OUR home. He's big and orange and always wants to play with us. Mom was really happy to have her "Norwynn" finally living with her after spending over a year apart. She started to feel bad though because Norwynn seemed to be lonely. Today, we found out that next Saturday another one of these things is coming to stay, but he's only a baby and is white. So now we have to live with two of these things. Maybe they'll get their own blog too.
Stay tuned.
xoxo,
Atticus and Penelope
Hi, I saw your post about shelves. Whimsy's Menagerie and Chinchilla Rescue has shelves of all kinds of lengths, and they even do custom lengths.
Thank you so much!
Need shelving help!
Hoping to do some custom changes to the cages soon. Wanting to take out some of the fleece shelving and put in wooden shelves (like Pen's lower level). I'd much rather order the shelving from a reliable chin place than worry about doing it myself. We don't really have the tools even though Trevor wants to do it himself. Anyways, if anyone can suggest a site to order from, please message me!
You would recommend fleece over regular bedding or no bedding at all?.
Fleece over regular bedding seems unnecessary. I honestly highly recommend just using fleece. Bedding is messy, smelly, and the cost adds up. A nice layer of fleece works perfectly. You can easily vacuum up the poops (so I also suggest a hand vac) and the fleece can be thrown into the wash to get rid of urine. Just be sure to try and get as much hay off as you can. Hay is messy and if your chin is anything like Penelope, it gets everywhere. There is always a little hay in the washer after the cycle, but that’s a simple clean up. And as I always say, fleece is just adorable. Hope I helped. I seem to go into so much detail on my posts, sorry for the length!
Chinchillas teeth grow quickly and constantly, so they need a constant supply of munch-able toys to chew on! Otherwise, their teeth will overgrow painfully and potentially fatally, which is known as malocclusion.
Various types of wood, natural pumice stones, and natural loofah (which is actually...
I can't remember if I already posted these, but these are from when Penelope was a baby.
I didn't take these pictures. They are from Detroit Chinchillas, where Pen's previous owners bought her. If anyone in Michigan is looking for a chinchilla, I highly recommend looking into these guys!
Oh boy. Ignore my messy dorm floor.
Chin toys can be expensive! Since the vast majority of pet store toys are not chin safe even if they claim to be, the best way to keep your little guys entertained is to order toys or toy parts online from various breeders and other chin owners who are committed to keeping your chin safe. (Here’s a good list of suppliers! Explore; a lot of people sell similar items but for different prices and shipping methods. I always look for people who ship in flat rate boxes.)
Since I order Bovril’s feed (Purina Rabbit Chow Show) from Chinchillacity, who flat rate ship, I filled the box with a bunch of little toys. Many places sell preassembled toys, which are super fun and cute!! But wholesaling toy parts is more cost effective. Rather than paying $7 for a preassembled hanging toy, I got everything in the picture for less than $25 WITH shipping!
5 slices of natural loofah
10 medium sized vine balls
25 colored wheels (for less than $3! see what I mean?)
A palm star
A drilled coconut shell
25’ of vine rope to string up the toys ($2.50!)
20 little wooden sticks
and not to mention 10 pounds of super fresh food! The wicker heart, popsicle sticks, pumice stone, and anything else not mentioned was thrown in generously for free.
All colored items are dyed with food coloring!
