@alpacka_rafts first adventure in my new #packraft in #puremichigan at #turniprock. #lakehuron #greatlakes #notsalty @thewayfaringson @_theseasonals_
Multi sport days are the absolute best. 25 miles before dinner split between hiking and pack rafting. Absolute best.
My-gon Trail
Again, it has been some time and many states. From California to Colorado, upstate New York to the upper peninsula of Michigan–off to Wisconsin, Minnesota, and soon to be in Arkansas. I have stayed in strangers houses, national parks, roadside scenic views, cars, hotels, and backyards. I am a traveling teacher. I play games with kids and challenge adults’ habits. Working for the Leave No Tace Center for Outdoor Ethics has been a wonderfully rewarding adventure. It keeps me busy and experiencing.
Someone once told me that thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail was like my pilgrimage or expedition to “new land”–my Oregon Trail. Who knew it would continue two years later. How long do we travel and explore before reaching our new land. Our new home? I’m still on the journey. Getting my wheels stuck in a few muddy ruts, occasionally eating poisonous weeds, getting attacked by the occasional bandit and running out of supplies; but always moving forward and ready for the next obstacle.
Find your journey. Whether it is in your career, your family, your love life, or your self. Everyone’s pilgrimage may look different. They may be following different maps. But no one pilgrimage is comparable to another. No one pilgrimage is better than another. Just different. Keep it up. Do your thing. Make your way to a new place where the grass is truly greener and you are truly happy.
The Yellow Deli found me once again. From Rutland, VT to Boulder, CO. From one epic adventure to the next. ‘Twas delish and the company 'twas delightful.
Check out my first visit: http://atupdate.tumblr.com/post/58716293976/more-of-the-yellow-deli-hiker-hostel-in-rutland http://atupdate.tumblr.com/post/58715792719/work-for-stay-at-the-yellow-deli-loving-community http://atupdate.tumblr.com/post/58716922144/inside-the-hostel-you-can-understand-why-it-was
Because dressing up makes this way more fun... plus it gives you an excuse to hop/skip all the day long.
A couple things you missed.

Cali-girls!
equivocatoryElevate-or
Okay. So here is my elevator-pitch update. Ready, inhale, and hit it Ace Ventura Pet Detective-style:
Alaska (may-october), black bears peeking through the bedroom window in the night, seasonal workers/comrades/besties, bushwhacking through native Devils Club and Muskeg, midnight ocean swims lit by the fairy-like phosphorescence of the sea, becoming Miss Maypole in the locally infamous “Fish Pirate’s Daughter” play, unbeatable salmon jerky, hanging with Gabe and Cupcake (@Alaskan Bush People), dancing on rooftops wrapped in the warmth of the moment and lost in the distant stars, 3 am wake-up to witness the total lunar eclipse, you name it.
...I hope one of the seven open tabs on your computer is dazed with elevator music...
By Halloween, I was back in Michigan visiting family/friends and preparing my turkey-wear for Thanksgiving. Then off for some southern sun in my sexy red-stitched-leather-seated Ford Fusion (14 hour solo drive, a few stops to pay-it-forward, and a bag of boiled peanuts later) I arrived. Several weeks later, and another 14 hour drive, I was back north for family Christmas and winterloverland.
“We seem to be experiencing slower elevator times do to an overload of destinations/details. Your ride will be extended for several paragraphs…”
At this point, something extremely important happened: Atreyu (fellow AT thru-hiker, thespian, writer of sorts, expert craftsman of miniature boats, and dear friend) shared with me the an opportunity for a life “power-up”. With steep competition, I took the opportunity, the “mega mushroom”, and joined the race of 135 Bowsers, Princesses, Toads, and Yoshis that were vying for, what I can now call, MY and my partner’s: Blake Edward Jackson, dream job (more on this later). #Subaru/LeaveNoTraceTravelingTrainer
4...3...(ding)...
(inhale) I hopped a plane between interviews, caught my two gal pals on vacation in LA, stayed with one of my best AT trail buds and hiking partner of more than 500 miles: Turbo, toured highway 1/101 through Big Sur, over to Yosemite, down to Sequoia National, caught a bus in Fresno, hopped off in San Fran, met with Zorro (another trail bud), crashed there for a couple weeks trying my best to understand Hebrew and consuming champion-worthy homemade, brick-oven pizza, found a random Craigslist Rideshare with Shoji, this totally kickass, generous, funny, personable rocksolidstar who believes in the goodness of the world and does his part in sharing it, who knows when the Thai menu says spicy, they really mean it, and who leaves the shelter of a planned route in chance of meeting someone new, learning something new, &/or giving something known (you totally rock man, come visit). Shoji dropped me in Bellingham with my girl Bekah, a new Leave No Trace advocate/role model, who brought light to my story through a couple glasses of wine, shared her city, her family, and tales of relatable awkwardness. (...2) Picked up Blake and his Great Dane (Raleigh) from the Alaskan Ferry, we rented a car, made it to Michigan in 4 days, 3 car camps, 2 ice cream cones, and 1 detour to a small ski town bar to deliver a clipping of Blake’s old rat tail braid. From Michigan we took my sexy car to Georgia and…(ding) I put it up for sale. Itisnolongermysexycar:(
And then, DING!
Alrighty then. TBC.
GET READY FOR IT!
I’M BACK! Okay gang, trail Angels, payer-forwarders, adventurers, supporters, lovers—I have been on wild adventures from Alaska to Michigan, to the south, over to California, Oregon, Washington and back to the Midwest. I have been on trains, planes, & automobiles with strangers, Craiglisters, and angels of sorts. I’ve accepted adventures and challenges and am committed to spreading the word of the vast amount of goodness in people, that if you want to do something, do it, and that being a female traveler with a low bank account isn’t so bad. :) My BIGGEST regret… not taking that very advice, not following through with my promise--thinking and planning to blog but slacking on the execution. I pledge, at this moment to be better. To do my part by sharing the beautiful things that happen to me, the kindness of strangers, the luck of the road. To keep my loved ones better updated and to leave myself a more stable reference for when I tell my stories some steep mountain as an 89 year old woman, surrounded by the glittering youth. This is my step one. No longer will I wait to release my “ideal/perfect blog/website” because the adventures do not wait and they are passing, changing, turning, and sparking every moment.
Adventure ON!
Appalachian Trail Anniversary!
This time, last year, I set out on the AT thinking I was just going to hike the trail and move onto the next venture of life. I soon realized there was soooooo much more to the equation. The AT isn't about hiking... its about finding a way to laugh when your feet are soggy, about cheering when you find a trash can, about sharing your last two squares of toilet paper. Even more so... it is about the people. I have had so many individuals offer up their cars, homes, showers, wallets, you name it--and the best part is that they had no mal or misleading intentions. I have danced under the stars, napped on mountaintops, and eaten more oatmeal than one should eat in a lifetime. To this, I simply say I have so much to pay forward and remember that attitude is the difference between an ordeal and an adventure. So, ADVENTURE ON! sending my love to fellow AT hikers! Oh and a quick side note, my next adventure commences May 2--Alaska here I come!
My world! Conquered!...for now
Hi Kate; Have you completed the hike and if so,what is your next adventure?I have enjoyed your blog and especially the pics;I realized that I am somewhat isolated by not traveling and seeing other places.If you have finished your journey I guess it was sort of a bittersweet feeling;happy you had accomplished such a venture and sad about not meeting new people and places. Anyway,let us know what your status is.
Fondly;
Richard in N.C.
Hi Richard! I made it!! It was the time of my life. Absolutely insane that I've been out there since April! Thank you so much for helping us along our way :) it is people, angels!, like yourself that made this adventure. I have stories for days about everyone who has helped out or reached out to us in some way. I'm not sure what my next adventure is yet but stay tuned! I think it's near impossible to sit put at this point. I can't wait to get started with something new, meet new people, see new places. We will keep in touch :) ill let the boys know you say hello. God bless
This is Tom. Tom is an angel. He is the honored guest at dinner parties he doesn't attend, he is the head chef for meals he has never tried, dog whisper extraordinaire and so much more. Tom picked us up as we were heading out of town one late afternoon. The previous 3 days had been drowned in stubborn wetness and let us say, we were less than thrilled to jump back into the woods (but of course, keeping our heads high and smiles wide-ish). Well anyway, Tom picked us up and invited us over for a home cooked meal and a bed to sleep in...Goldilocks, who had an abscessed tooth and a face that was starting to swell jumped in Tom's car and said yes please oh thank you. So myself, goldilocks, turbo, and zoro were in for a special treat-- lots of them, Tom fed us an extraordinary amount of food... Ripened me up for the 100 miles of wilderness that were oh so close. Tom's deeds: ride to hospital for goldilocks, pesto pasta, pork roast, eggs Benedict, pancakes, more more more, GnTs (gin and tonics but with a wicked awesome twist), good company, a dance party, showers, laundry, beds, slack packs, my new flannel!, car rides, good company, four wheeler rides, puzzles, eyeyeyeyeyeyeyeyeyeyeyeyeh.... We stayed for 3 more nights :). Thanks Tom Dickey! P.s. ladies, he is a single man and oh so generous. If anyone is interested, you just send me a message ;) P.s.s. the tree picture is called the dancing tree... Check it out, looks like the trunk on the right is being dipped backwards with the support if the left trunk.
Did a night hike up this mountain during a full moon. It was spectacular. It felt like we were actually walking on a moon cratered surface, super surreal. We cowboy camped up on top and watched the sunrise. Yupppppp
Fording the river to Caratunk! We almost missed the last boat trip, but started running and made it by 3:58. It's funny how when you really need to get somewhere or do something, that sore foot or tweaked knee is suddenly transparent.
