“The Trial of Jean Grey”
The arrival of the original X-Men in the present sent shockwaves through the Marvel Universe, but we’ve only seen the effects on Earth. When alien races learn that Jean Grey, host of the destructive Phoenix Force, is back on earth, they do something about it. Now it’s up to the rest of the All-New X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy to save Jean Grey from twisted intergalactic justice! Don’t miss two of Marvel’s biggest franchises crossing over for the first time!
It was a punk rock commentary on what its like to be young and in love and dealing with the outside world as you came into your own. It was a monthly explosion of the comic book format, constantly pushing the boundaries of what could be done to tell a story in the graphic medium. It was a book that showcased a cast of LGBT heroes and heroes of race.
But more than all of these, it was a book that was true and honest.

"The only people who should be allowed to make comics are ones who actually care about the characters"
It makes the job a lot harder sometimes, actually.
But I can’t write characters unless I care about them.
I dunno who would make comics about characters they don’t care about. Like Garth Ennis wouldn’t write about Wolverine being dismembered horribly if he didn’t hate Wolverine from the bottom of his heart. Authors need to care to make well, I think.
Ideally, sure, but a lot of writers are not in the position to pick and choose, and sometimes you mean well, but the characters don’t click properly for you (I was a bad fit for Firestorm, for example).
Sometimes, a character might get assigned to a book and you have to find things to care about with them…I was not a huge Bane fan when they asked me to put him in Secret Six, for example.
I always say, for me, I have to find the key, that element that makes me care about a character, even a villain. Some writers are more removed than that, and are able to use the characters more as chess pieces, they are moving a plot around, and that can make for excellent stories, it just doesn’t work for me.
But a lot of pros have warned me against my approach because there IS a lot of heartache involved…when you build a character up and someone else tears all that down thoughtlessly, it stings. Or when a character is killed stupidly, whatever, it’s actually very painful. So several prose have told me over and over, don’t get attached, remember that you don’t own these characters.
That’s how they make it all work for them and I get it, but I can’t make that work. When I don’t care about the characters, the stories just don’t turn out well.
I prefer your method, Gail, because it forces out one salient point that the chess masters rarely consider: that everyone is someone’s favorite character. If the characters are just pieces to the writer, then they appears as easily disposable, leading to unsatisfying death scenes and other things which tend to mar a character’s future use out of neglect and apathy rather than any deliberate plan. But when the writer cares, it creates a buffer against that misuse and then, if/when they are killed off under their pen, it truly matters and thus, is a far superior death scene.
I agree! Why bother reading at all if it’s all going to be corporate manufactured?
People won’t care unless someone shows up why we should care! I mean, hell, we’re in a rut where we’re told the only characters we should care about are Batman, Superman, Wolverine, Captain America, and Iron Man! Why shouldn’t writers take the other characters to the fullest extent and expand the horizons for readers?!
Honestly, there needs to be a status quo shift that isn’t just “We’re gonna kill off another lesser character, but keep the same characters at the top”.
