Her eye sparkled when he pulled out the dresses. Her doubt was gone and all she could do now was gawk at the pretty dresses that she could buy.

“Oooooo” her eye wandered over each dress as she cupped her eye with her hands. Which one should she buy? They were all so lovely. How could she choose? Here eye soon rested on the dress that was patterned with light blue and pink. She wanted it badly. She needed it.

“That one!!” She pointed vigorously. “How much???”

[💼] He grinned when he noticed how Aubrey’s eye sparkled and then how she gawked at the dresses. His plan was indeed working quite nicely. He waited patiently as she struggled to figure out which one to buy. Who knows, maybe he’ll be lucky and she’ll decide to buy all the dresses since she had a hard time deciding?

“A brilliant choice, Miss,” he smiled when she picked the dress that had been patterned with light blue and pink, “It will really bring out the colour of yer eye. As for the price, this pretty dress is goin’ at the special price of eighty price. Considerin’ the quality of the material used to make it, it is quite a bargain, no?”

“Eighty???” She seemed surprised by the price as her eye widened. With a worrired look on her face, she shuffled around in her pocket to pull out the money she had on hand. After sorting through her cash, it looked as though she had plenty to purchase the dress with, yet she still looked concerned.

“Uhhmm..” she said is a hushed voice before pulling out a few bills from her wad, offering them to the salesman. “What about sixty??” she asked, looking no less worried than before.

She gave him a delighted nod. “Yeah, I love bugs! (she did not catch the “lady” portion) Such cute little critters! BUT! They’re not my favorite. My favorite is-” Aubrey suddenly froze and looked very nervous and panicked. She stared at her hands as if they would give her the answer. She did not know the sign for her favorite animal. To some this isn’t a big deal, but this seemed to matter a great deal to Aubrey. She then stared at William wondering if he could help her out.

*William tilts his head with curiosity. He senses something is wrong, but he’s not quite sure what it is. He reaches for his phone, realizes he dropped it, and retrieves it from the floor. He types into the app and it translates for him.*

William: (What is it? What happened?)

“The sign!” she motioned “I don’t know the sign!” she twiddled her fingers as she glanced up toward the ceiling, but after a few seconds she seemed to have gotten an idea. “Mouse, but bigger, not a rat, soft” she motioned to him to see if he could guess it.

*He ponders a moment then spells out some animals he thinks fits her description.*

William: (C-H-I-N-C-H-I-L-L-A? H-A-M-S-T-E-R? G-U-I-N-E-A P-I-G?) *He hopes one of those is right.*

Aubrey’s eye widened when he spelled out Chinchilla “Yes! The fluffy baby! I love them a lot!!” she signed with enthusiasm and hugged herself as if she was pretending that she was holding one.

William: (I love them too! I call them “squirrel rabbits! Or “rabbit squirrels!” Because there’s no actual sign for them. They’re supper fluffy! Have you ever had one before?)

She let out a short sigh

“No! I want one SO BAD! Have you pet one? The are really really soft!”

William: (Yes! I have! My neighbor had one! She was really nice to me, but then she moved away. I was really little so the chinchilla was too big for me to hold on my own. So she held him for me so I could pet him! He was floofy!)

“I can’t wait to have one. I will pet it every day and call them a good baby.” she paused for a bit. “Have you ever had a pet” she paused, trying to remember the sign for a word. “…before?”

William: (No.) *He shakes his head.* (My parents didn’t think I could handle it. Dad said if I was too dumb to talk, there was no way I’d be smart enough to take care of even a fish. Mom figured she’d end up taking care of them if I got one. And she said it was hard enough taking care of just me. And I lived at home up until the moment I joined this place.)

*He tells her as emotionlessly as someone relaying this week’s weather forecast. Except that William would actually been excited to talk about the weather.*

Aubrey looked confused and tilted her head a bit. “I don’t understand. You seem smart to me. Why they think you can’t take care of a pet?” She signed. Aubrey didn’t think that it had anything to do with his disabilities at all and didn’t even consider it as a reason as to why his parents would think that. @askthedeafwatchdog

*William tries to remember his parent’s words exactly. What was it that they had scrawled on paper the millionth time he asked if he could get a pet? When he told them that all the other kids had pets, and that he’d fit in more if he had one.*

William: (They said I could hardly take care of myself. That I couldn’t pay attention to an animal or listen to it. They told me it took a normal kid to take of one. And to stop bothering with foolish and idiotic thoughts that I could do something a normal kid could do.)

Aubrey paused for a little bit, then looked as though she had some sort of idea “Hey. Do you want to go to the pet store with me?” she signed then smiled with a hint of mischievousness.

William signs, ‘I would love to!’ Then looking a bit sad, he adds, ‘But I can’t right now. Today is reeeaaally busy! Someone had a party and half the staff is cleaning that up, so there’s not very many people working out here.’

“awww” Aubrey said aloud. She sounded slightly disappointed, but also understanding. “That’s okay!” she signed in reassurance with a smile. She paused and looked pensive. “Do you want me to help you?”

‘You really don’t have to! But it’s really nice of you to offer.’ He smiles graciously. 'I’m sure you have other stuff to do, like getting attacked by vents.’
