CORBIN - MOURN

Corbin aka Spooky Black returns with an introspective and sombre LP that leaves his prior works looking comparatively joyous.

The World Wide Web sensation with the haunted voice is proving his rise to internet subculture stardom was no stroke of luck. Mourn leaves you feeling like Corbin has left every fibre of his being on the record - emotions, guts, vocal chords and all. He’s an artist that will undoubtedly split opinion, and although a track with the sensation of his breakthrough moment ‘Without You’ might not appear on Mourn, this is his most complete and accomplished work yet.

If catharsis is your thing then this is for you, and if it’s not, well, steer clear.

POPPY AJUDHA - LOVE FALLS DOWN

Warm, playful, and irresistibly charming, Poppy Ajudha’s effervescent vocal talent comes to life on ‘Love Falls Down’. Hailing once again from the musical breeding ground that is South London, the girl’s got talent that should not be ignored. With a voice full of soul, and a sound which wouldn’t feel out of place in a smoke-filled Jazz bar, Poppy’s exuberance will be sure to take her onto big things.

LOW ISLAND - DISCONNECT

Low Island aren’t playing around, having apparently found the formula for trippy technicolour escapism in the form of song, the Oxford four-piece have definitely caught people’s attention. Taken from their newly released debut EP Just About Something, Low Island have produced a sound with the maturity and technicality of a band that have been writing and playing together for years. Intricate jazzy drums back up delicate math-rock guitars, misty vocals and dreamy synths, all to create a cosmic journey of a track. Low Island seem to have thrown all the elements of great experimental alternative music into the kiln, and it’s looking like it has come out quite nicely. I’ll be keeping my eye on these lads.

COSMO PYKE - CHRONIC SUNSHINE

One of South London’s brightest young talents Cosmo Pyke continues to realise his potential with the release of his latest single Chronic Sunshine. Combining resonant jazzy instrumentals with effortless melody and soft-like-butter vocals - the lad is on to something special. 

Oh yeah, he’s a model as well, and he’s been in a Frank Ocean video, and he went to Brit School. Probably one to watch out for then...

CODE WALK - GUESS WHAT (FT. SMERZ)

Danish producer duo Code Walk team up with Norwegian girls Smerz to create a Scandy smash. This is the first track from Code Walk that has come to my attention, but with Smerz turning heads in the British capital for a short while now after some memorable live shows and sets on NTS radio, it’s the perfect combination to showcase the talent coming out of Northern Europe right now. I’m sure this won’t be the only thing we hear from Code Walk in 2017.

MATT MALTESE - VACANT IN THE 21ST CENTURY

A voice to be reckoned with, Matt Maltese creates a track which is as sulky as it is uplifting. Matt labels his sound as ‘Post-Emo piano music’, and like all the best soppy emo tunes, this track is full to the brim with cathartic energy and crescendo. It’s not often these days that I let my inner side-fringe loose, but for this I’ll make an exception.

BILK - GET ON IT

New lads on the block Bilk kick out a decent racket. The boys absolutely stink of the dregs of last nights Amber Leaf, an empty ash-filled tinny, and peeling your face off your mates leather sofa - if you’re not liking the sound of that then it’s probably not for you. A refreshingly untouched band straight out of Essex whose sheer unashamed adolescence deserves your attention. Apologies if it’s ringing around your head all day.

KOJEY RADICAL - GALLONS

Your new favourite artist just stepped it up a gear. Kojey Radical is the name, killing tracks with thought-provoking lyrical and musical mastery is the proverbial game. No, but seriously, I’ve been listening, posting and fan-boying over Kojey for a while now, and this track feels like the fork in the road. This is where the beautiful obscurity of past releases gets put into perspective and people really sit the fuck down and take note of the talent at hand. Maybe I’m getting too excited after three back-to-back run throughs, but fully gassed or not, Gallons bangs.

JORDAN RAKEI - ROOFTOP

It’s not that hard to find great songs, yet great artists are far more elusive - Jordan Rakei is undoubtedly the latter. With silk-soul vocals and inebriating groove, the young Aussie-come-Londoner will leave his signature written on your brain all day. First grabbing my attention, alongside many others, with his 2014 smash ‘Add the Bassline’ Rakei finally released his debut album Cloak to great acclaim earlier this year. And what success he has found since, his European tour arrives in the UK in November, but no sleeping on this ticket as unfortunately for London and Bristol heads you’ve already missed out on sell-out Louisiana and Jazz Cafe shows. Anyways, I saw he released this fucking great video to accompany one of the stand-out tracks on the album, ‘Rooftop’, earlier this week so I thought I’d share Rakei in all his glory with you. The glittering iridescent gloom of the visual seems to capture the mood perfectly, and I’ve been watching it all day.

FREDWAVE - 99

London’s most exciting up-and-comer has once again proven himself as the one to watch. Fredwave’s prior release, the haunting hidden gem, ‘Kno Betta’ (posted below), is to this day one of my most played and most adored tracks. The 22 year-old writer, singer and producer returns adding his signature vocal luminosity to a more upbeat yet equally as grief-fraught track. With ‘99′ being the first taster of the upcoming debut album Fredwave has in the pipeline, all signs lead to a bright future.

PALACE

With their debut album set for release this November, all signs point to a big 2017 for Palace. First coming to my attention with the above track, Veins, Palace have a sound that has no barriers, it’s made for anyone - it’s just fucking great music. These boys are on to something so keep your eye out and take notice.

SERPENTWITHFEET - FOUR ETHERS 

It’s not often I post music from across the pond but for this i’ll make an exception. With a name like Serpentwithfeet i’d forgive you for thinking you’ve gone one video too far on a weird two-hour reptilian YouTube tangent, but bear with us here. Backed by a muted operatic crescendo, Serpentwithfeet punches his voice through the rising texture to create something truly special.

JORJA SMITH

Keep your eye on Jorja Smith.

After hearing her re-imagine, re-invent, and re-invigorate Dizzee Rascal’s classic track ‘Sirens’, Jorja Smith hasn’t left my recently played. Ever since then she’s been building on her repertoire, releasing a cracking track with Maverick Sabre, and then following it up with a beautifully uplifting summer anthem, ‘Where Did I Go?’ (Rumour is she shot the video on her staircase - top marks for ingenuity). 

Once you hear her music, you definitely won’t forget her.

JERKCURB - NIGHT ON EARTH

For the past month as soon as I open my laptop and have finished pissing around on BBC Sport gossip column, my fingers have been typing the name of this track into the YouTube search bar as if it were subliminally embedded into my subconscious... and, to be fair, I wouldn’t be surprised if that were true. This track is as hypnotic as it is thoroughly fucking great, and Jerkcurb is a talent that undoubtedly requires your undivided attention. So crack it on - even whack it on full screen if you like.

SLOWTHAI - JIGGLE

Visuals looking like Post Malone meets The Basement and the audio sounding like Sub Luna City meets Ice Rink. I’ve never heard of this dude before, but in his first visual Slowthai is proving he’s definitely no amateur. Geeza said, “Back in the day I was a gyallis, now i’m on a vibe with my wife in a palace, dressed in Palace” and I was sold.

KANO LIVE

So I hit up Kano on Saturday night after his Mum managed to get me and a couple others on guest list (true stories, cheers Melrose). I caught him last year when the set list was very much a comeback vibe, all the old bangers came out and I was feeling like I was 15 again walking to school with my iPod Nano blasting - in my zone. This time round I didn’t know what to expect as much. I hate to be the hipster who ‘prefers their older stuff’, but honestly that is how I initially felt after hearing some of the tracks on the new album. Don’t get me wrong, I honestly feel Made in the Manor has some of Kano’s career highlights, but tracks like ‘Drinking in the West End’ and ‘Little Sis’ just felt a little bit... under par. Nevertheless, I was up for it. Kano held true to Made in the Manor playing almost every song and only making way for a couple of the classics (which saw me start pouring my drink everywhere like it was Courvoisier in a hood video). In fact on reflection I was loving all of the tracks. What I thought some tracks may have lacked whilst listening at home, was all but revealed live. So yeah, turns out I am just a fucking hipster, Kano’s new album is straight banging... except Little Sis - it’s boring. Sorry. And maybe Drinking in the West End. But apart from that. Banging.

YGG - DON’T TALK LIKE THAT (EZRO REMIX) 

If you don’t know about YGG go and listen to their set on Spyro’s The Grime Show. As in now. Seriously.

Saint, PK and Strally have been taking pirate radio by the balls for well over a year now; their affiliations with the lads from The Square(r.i.p), AJ Tracey and the rest of the Radar Radio regulars has them fixed at the centre of one of the most exciting era’s of new young talent grime has seen since the golden era. The lads finally swapped up the station for the studio after releasing the video to their new track ‘Dont Talk Like That’, and there is no doubt it bangs, but it’s the Ezro remix that has had me coming back to it again and again.
