“Yeah. But fear not. As uplifting a sight as that would be, I will not subject you to that coarse act.” Revving the engine with a twist of his wrist, he grinned. “Now get out of my way, please. Come on, I even asked nicely.”
“You’re such an asshole, you know that? I hope you crash your motorcycle somewhere.”
Some of the times Dom liked most was when people failed to recognize him. It wasn’t unheard of as he tended to stay out of the limelight when it came to his family business, though he still played an important part. Or it may have just been due to the fact that he had been out of the country for five years until Julianne’s death. Either way, he preferred to be just another person. “No. Not a cop.” Her insinuation of him being such a thing brought a corner of his mouth up in a half smile, as did her compliment. “So, you’re looking to learn to shoot or something. Or improve?”
“So this is just a hobby? Or do you picture someone’s face on that target?” Audrey rose an eyebrow, a hint of a smile on her lips. “Yeah, the former. I’ve only held a gun once in my life and I want to learn how to shoot, both to protect myself if need be and because it’s a challenge for me.”
“They’re not, but a couple thousand dollars and a rising consumer’s list is still good for business. It’s not personal, it’s just what it is. Sorry, no ride for you. Good luck with public transportation.”
“Are you serious? I thought we had something special going on MC, and now you’re breaking my heart, all because of business. Shame. Oh well, I’m definitely not gonna beg you, if that’s what you’re expecting.”
“I won’t insult your purse if you slip them another brand instead. You should’ve kept that part a secret, James.”
“Sorry, no can do. I’d rather you insult me than have my ass kicked out on the streets because of my boss, or worse. Please, it’s not like you don’t know what I do, and what’s a couple thousand dollars to you, anyway? Don’t tell me things are going south for you Castles.”
Yes, your cryptic message has been understood. You need to meet with someone. Got it. I’m just headed for a ride, so your destination isn’t really out of my way at all. I will ask, however, for a cup of coffee in return.
“I’m not trying to be cryptic, it’s just a work thing, meeting up with some teenager that wants to throw an unforgettable party for his friends. His words, not mine.” Audrey rolled her eyes before grabbing the extra helmet and putting it over her head. “Of course, you wouldn’t do anything for free. You got yourself a deal, but only if you don’t insult my purse this time.”
To tell the truth, Dominic had been becoming annoyed with the nearby woman staring in his direction. Being raised in a crime family made one naturally suspicious of most people, and he’d already began to size her up before she opened her mouth. At her words though, her intentions became clear. “No, you’re alright for now.” He returned to the target and disengaged the gun safety, opening fire on the target figure that was a ways down the range. “So what have you observed so far?”
Audrey watched as the guy shot the target with ease, his aim impeccable. She took off her ear muffs and nodded, clearly impressed. “That you are very good at this,” she responded with a smile. “Are you a cop or something?”
“Okay, I guess. Where to?”
Lexington avenue, 74th street. There’s this coffee shop where I need to meet someone. Where are you going? Don’t wanna keep you from your responsibilities and whatnot.”
“But if he knew she was cheating with him, don’t you think he would’ve been more inclined to shoot the guy instead? Killin’ your own wife is just insane, man.”
“Killing someone over adultery is insane, period.”
“You’re telling me that Subway makes pizza now?”
“Yeah, it kinda makes me feel better about all the bad decisions I’ve made in my life. Word of advice? Don’t try it.”
Slapping the magazine back into the tail of the handgun, Dominic lined his sights along the barrel of the gun. The safety was still on as he turned to the person nearby. “You might want to step back, or at least cover your ears. She’s got a nice scream to her,” he said, referring to the firearm in his grip.
Audrey felt like a fish out of water at the shooting range, but she didn’t plan on giving up so easily. She decided to simply observe another person who looked like they knew what they’re doing for the sake of learning something other than what her instructor had told her earlier. “Oh--yeah, sure,” Audrey stuttered, putting on the safety ear muffs. “I’m not distracting you or anything, right? I just wanted to observe your technique.”
“You know, I actually do expect you to pull off some stuntwoman stuff.”
“I don’t know if I should be flattered when you say it like that. So will you seriously give me a ride? I have to meet with someone.”
“So, my birthday suffers because you’re poor company? Hardly seems fair.”
“I’m great company for people who know how to appreciate it. You just look like you wake up on the wrong side of the bad every single day and that is what’s not fair.”
“Yep. I am stressed. You know how long it’s been since I’ve gotten laid? That’ll stress any man out.”
“Oh, c’mon. A little hit never hurt anyone.”
“It feels like I’m talking to your brother right now.”
“Fine, but just because I’m stressed out, too.”
“Since I needed to chill the fuck out. C’mon. Not even pot?”
“Are you stressed out? I don’t know, I haven’t smoked pot since high school and that was a long time ago. I’m not sure how my body will react to it.”
