Talking to his parents wasn’t something Auggie enjoyed doing. He tired to avoid it like the plague. Only doing it once every few weeks. But this might have been the longest he had gone without speaking to them besides of course when he went to Korea. Then his parents didn’t speak to him for a few months. This time though it had been almost four weeks since he had spoken with them. It wasn’t like he was trying to push it that long. No. August was actually fairly busy right now. The man was working on a project for his company. A huge project actually. Which is why he was calling his parents. He wanted to clue them in on the project.

His heart was pounding every time he heard the ring. Would they even answer? He had been declining their calls. Again he was busy. He had other things to focus on. When he finally heard the woman answer. He froze. “August?” It was his mom of course. “August? Is this some kind of joke? Speak or I’m hanging up.” Her voice was already harsh nothing like the moms you read about or see on tv. No His parents were nothing like that.. “Don’t hang up ,eomma..” It only took Auggie hearing his parents’ voice for him to turn back into that scared little boy. That little boy who felt nothing but unloved. “What do you want August? You don’t call for weeks and then don’t answer when I call,” A sigh left her mouth. “So? What? I don’t have all day?”

Auggie froze for a moment before remembering why he called them. “Can you put it on speak so Appa can hear?” The man waited a beat before speaking again. He hoped that she had actually done what he requested. “I called because in a few weeks a show I’m working on is going to be on Hulu..and I um was wondering if you’d want to come to my viewing party?” Auggie just wanted their love. He just wanted their approval. Just wanted them to be proud of him. That wasn’t a lot to ask really. “Working? You work?” It was father this time. He could hear him over the speaker phone. Tears swelled in is eyes as heard the comment. “Y-yes..I work.” It wasn’t the first time they had said something like that but it still hurt every time. “You know what I do for a living..I work for an animation company.” His voice was weaker this time. “That’s not real work,” His father repeated. “And we won’t be entertaining the idea that it is. So no we won’t be coming to some party and that’s that.”

Tears flowed down the young man’s face. All he wanted was for them to support him. For them to be proud of him and again they weren’t. Again they acted like he was a joke. “This is a big deal.” He got clearly sobbing. “I’m the head on it..they normally don’t even let people lead a team but I am..I really want you guys to come.” He was begging at this point. Begging them to just say one nice thing. “No,” again his father cut him off. “i’ve given up so much for you guys please..” His mom laughed at that comment. Actually laughed. “What have you given up August? You’ve done nothing but just let us down so explain how you’ve given up stuff?” Without thinking of his words the man spoke. “I’ve given up friends, love..I can’t date because of you guys.. I can’t even think a man is attractive without reminding myself I can never go after that...”Auggie was about to speak more when his mom cut him off mid sentence. “August Lee..You said sending you to Korea helped you get over this thing you have. Did you lie to us? You still think being a man with a man will make you happy?” Full tears ran down his face as he began to get sick at his stomach. Why did he say that? Why didn’t he keep his mouth shut. “I...Yes..” It was no bigger than a mutter. “I know being with a man would make me happ-.” The phone clicked.

Calling to invite his parents to a party just ended with them bashing him and hanging up with him. Auggie was pretty sure he had just ruined the last bit of his relationship with them. Auggie collapsed to the floor of his kitchen. He sat there in that spot crying for hours. Crying till he couldn’t anymore. Crying until he was sick at his stomach. Crying until he dragged himself to his room and collopsed on to the bed. He didn’t sleep. No he just laid there next to Lilo. He was there in his body but it was as if he wasn’t. As if right now he was just a shell. The only thing that came to his mind of the decisions that he wasn’t going to have a viewing party at all. That he wasn’t even going to let anyone know about the show until after it aired. He didn’t need anymore heart break around the one thing he was lucking forward too.
