Hey guys the theme for February is Submarine, which is not always what it seems at first. We don’t really care that much about the actual underwater boat, but more of the 2010 film. If you haven’t seen the movie, (which you definitely should) the themes that encapsulate that movie we believe encapsulate February. Submarine is about a couple of things: for one when the main character and his father feel sad, they feel like they’re underwater, that’s what they objectify depression or sadness as. Submarines also use sonar waves to communicate with other boats and see what is ahead of them and the characters of the movie seem to communicate with each other like that as well. They can’t seem to find the right things to say to each other, yet love, loneliness, fear, lust and longing still resonate in each of the characters. Submarine more than anything though, is looking for yourself and trying to be the person you want yourself to be, while at the same time figuring out the person you actually are. Jam packed of beach sunsets in Wales, young oh-so-very awkward love, and a soundtrack exclusively by Alex Turner, Submarine is a very funny, sad beautiful, and real coming of age piece of art. URGENT ACTION: Sentenced Activist Remains At Risk Of Torture

Prominent Chinese activist Wu Gan (better known by his pen name Tufu, ‘The Butcher’) was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for ‘subverting state power’. In a statement released after the sentencing, Wu Gan stated he was tortured during detention and there are fears that he continues to be at risk of torture and other ill-treatment. Wu Gan was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment and deprived of political rights for a further five years for ‘subverting state power’ by the Tianjin Municipal No.2 Intermediate People’s Court on 26 December 2017. Shortly after being sentenced, Wu Gan released a statement saying that he had rejected the authorities’ request for him to plead guilty in exchange for a more lenient sentence. According to his lawyer, Wu Gan was given a relatively harsh sentence in comparison to other activists due to his refusal to plead guilty.

Immediately and unconditionally release Wu Gan as he has been imprisoned solely for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression and assembly;

Pending his release, ensure that Wu Gan has regular, unrestricted access to family and lawyers of his choice, and is not subjected to torture or other ill-treatment;

Conduct a prompt, effective and impartial investigation into the alleged torture against Wu Gan and bring those responsible to justice.
