Chapter 2/?
Like A Bird Through The Night
A day later, Bruce brought me home to his manor. It was difficult being back, with all the memories. The Titans were still there, much to my disapproval.
“Evelyn, right? I’m Gar,” said a voice behind me. I was getting my things set up in a spare room. I turned around to see the little guy from the Titans.
“Yeah. What’re you guys still doing here? Thought you were going to San Francisco.”
“I think Dick is dragging his feet because of you,” he explained. “He wanted to meet you under better circumstances,” he finished when he saw my confusion. I didn’t have much to say. “Well, um, Jason is in his room down the hall. He hasn’t said much, but I think he’s been waiting to see you.” Gar walked away and once he was far enough from me I made the trek to Jason’s room. I contemplated just walking in, but I decided to knock.
Jason opened the door and let out a gasp when he saw me. “Bruce didn’t tell me you got here,” he greeted. “I was waiting a long time for you.” He opened the door to let me in and we sat on the bed.
“What happened?” I asked. “I don’t remember much.”
“It’s a lot,” he started. “When Fletcher and his guys were cornered, he shot you. I was unharmed, so I got to skip the hospital. Bruce is working with Barbara about all the crime stuff, trying to get it waved on account of grooming. Everyone says Crane took advantage of me, but I don’t see it like that. So I’ve just been here, waiting for you.”
“I’ve been meaning to talk to you,” I said. He looked at me and I grabbed his hand in mine. “I hate to be cliche, but what are we? We felt more like partners in crime, but since I was alone in the hospital I’ve been thinking about it. Is this going to die out without the sneaking around?”
“I don’t want it to,” Jason said after a long hesitation. “I care about you, I don’t want to lose you.”
“I don't want to lose you either.” There was another lull in the conversation. I couldn't tell what he was thinking, but I knew what I had to say. “I love you, Jason.” He looked at me and blushed. “I do. I don't know how it happened but I can't stay away from you. I fear that if I don't say it now, I'd never tell you how I feel.”
Jason took my head in his hands and gently pulled me close, kissing me. This time it didn't feel confusing. It felt familiar. “I love you too,” he confided. “I should've told you months ago.” I leaned my head on his shoulder, pulling him into a side hug. “I hate to break the moment, but I want to go downstairs and get something to eat.” I kissed him on the forehead and went down with him.
Bruce and Dick were talking in the kitchen while Conner, Gar, and Rachel hung out in the living room. The former didn't pay any mind to us as Jason made a sandwich.
“Do you want ham on yours?” Jason asked me. I didn't realize he was making two. I got an onion out of the fridge and began slicing it. “Can you get a tomato too?” I grabbed a tomato and sliced only a few just for him. Jason assembled the sandwiches as I finished and we brought them to the living room.
“Oh, hey guys,” Conner greeted. “Feelin’ okay?”
“Yeah, I'm feeling great,” Jason responded. He was genuinely smiling.
“I have a question,” Gar spoke up. “Are you two, like, dating?” I rolled my eyes.
“That's none of your business.”
“Actually, we just made it official," Jason said at the same time. I playfully shoved him.
“Alright, yeah whatever, we're dating.”
“For how long?” Rachel asked.
“A couple of months.” The team and us got to talking, enjoying ourselves. I was glad to be welcomed in the group. A little bit later, Bruce and Dick came into the room.
“Are you guys finishing up? We should get on the road soon.”
“Aw, but Evelyn just got here!” Rachel protested. “We're having a nice time.”
“Say your goodbyes. I'll be waiting outside,” Dick told her.
“Well, I'll miss you,” Gar said.
“You seem pretty nice,” I told him. He pulled Jason into a hug.
“You've been good, man. I'll see you later.”
“See you, Gar.” I hugged each of them too and I found myself getting a little teary-eyed. It took so long to find a family and when I had the start of one, they were moving back to across the country.
