This Quarter is Kicking my ass

I can’t watch anything without analyzing it like a piece of literature. I watched Megamind for the first time the other day and I’m now a firm believer that it’s a thesis on the principle of nurture vs nature.

Sorry for this Vent but work has been so frustrating! My boss is so disorganized and doesn't take criticism very well.

I get that the holidays are super stressful but don't take it out on your employees.

Fences and the Impacts of Generational Trauma

 I wrote this for my high school English class. I'm pretty proud of it so I'm sharing it here :)

Fences by August Wilson is a play surrounding this family in the 1950s. His play explores how Generational Trauma can have severe negative effects on our relationships and ultimately ourselves. We follow Troy Maxson, a man whose dreams had remained unfilled due to societal structures and the limitations of the world around him. Troy grew up with an extremely abusive father and faced an extreme amount of oppression due to racism. Troy has two sons. Lyons is his son from a previous relationship and Cory is from his current wife Rose. Rose and Troy have been together for almost 18 years. Troy’s experiences with his past affects how he interacts with his own children and the relationships they form or the lack of relationship they form. 

Troy used to be a great baseball player in the past and probably could’ve gone pro, if it wasn’t for racial barriers at the time. This unfulfilled dream that he had sticks with him for the rest of his life. He holds a lot of anger and resentment at the world around him. We see this in his interactions with his son Cory. Cory is also an athlete, he plays football, and he wants to go play it in college. Our first interaction between the two of them is Troy disapproving of this dream. He’s afraid that cory will get hurt the same way he did in the past and worries that Cory will throw away his future. In Act 1, Scene 1 Troy exclaims to his wife rose that “The white man ain’t gonna let him anywhere near that football” This is what happened to Troy with baseball, he couldn’t make living off it and now he feels like he is struck with a job he dislikes and in a house that always needs fixing. He wants Cory to have a better life than him and not go down the same path. In the same line Troy claims that Cory has learned how to fix cars or something that will make him a living. 

Troy feels like Cory, on top of wanting to pursue a dream that Cory sees as impossible, also lacks responsibility and experiences with the real world. In Act 1, Scene 3 as Troy and Cory are fixing up the fence Cory is asking why they can’t buy a T.V. This leads into an argument regarding money and responsibility. Troy claims that Cory doesn’t understand that they need to spend money on more important things. It shows this contrast between want and need. Troy wants to be a baseball player, he wants to be more than what he is right now, but he needs to take care of his family. This also feeds into his affair with Alberta. Being with her allows him to focus on what he wants to be rather than what he is. In Act 2, Scene 1 after he tells Rose about the affair, he tells her that Alberta “Gives me a different idea…A different understanding about myself. I can step out of this house…I can be a part of myself that I ain’t never been.” 

Despite all the hardships that have been passed down from generation to generation, each one becomes better than the last. Troy, although he wasn’t the best father, was better than his own. Cory, even though he was kicked out of his home and had to make a way for himself ended up better than his father. He ends up joining the Marines, which provides him with a much more stable income then Troy had, and he ends up marrying a woman that he loves. Troy’s failure to acknowledge his own problems is what leads to Cory and his relationship completely falling apart.

Personal Education Manifestation

I actually really love school! I'm very grateful to have access to education and I'm super excited to transfer from community college to university. I can't wait to have my own apartment and decorate it.

My future is looking bright, and I must keep moving forward.

i love community college cuz why am i, a 19 yr old w no major hoping to transfer, in the same classes as an intelligence analyst mother of 2 children and 30 yr old men. what could we have in common ? an intro level psychology course that's what

College and work are so tiring. I think I'm starting to burn out, and I feel so awful pretty much all the time. It's so frustrating. I used to really love my job, but now I'm starting to dread it. I hope this gets better
