"Lucheek's Decimal System"
I was reading about the Dewey Decimal System, and other library categorization criteria, last night… and I decided to come up with a semi-serious parody code system for organizing comics. The code has two parts: "Genre/Trope" and "Evil/Angst"- which is my indicator for grimdark / edgelord stuff… an important metric to know for modern comic readers, in my opinion. :P
Genre/Tropes are given a two-character letter code. "Moral Fable" (AA), "Wonder Tale" (AB), and "Medieval Fantasy" (BB)… and so on.
"LitRPG/Isekai," "Magical Girl," "Superhero," "Slice of Life," "Romance," etc… will also have codes I haven't decided on.
However, a book is not only organized by what genre/tropes (and I do mean they could have multiple) but a single digit 0-9 on how close they follow the genre cannon. 0 is "genre-defining." 9 is a "barely this at all, really, but I guess kind of matters."
So, lets say "The Hobbit" - a book I've described on the cusp of classic Medieval High Fantasy, almost starting the genre as it transitions from fairy tale. I'd give that a "BB1AB4" code. Lord of the Rings might be "BB0".
(Lower numbered codes go before higher numbered codes.)
Evil/Angst is the next part of the code, which defines the point on a grid with two axis.
"Evil" is how much bad, horrible, macabre, dark, etc…. stuff happens in the fiction. If it happens at all, if it's shown or mentioned or implied at all… that increases the Evil axis position from 0 to 9.
"Angst" is how the reader is meant to feel about the the evil in the story. Are we supposed to also feel bad about the horrible things- or are the horrible things a joke, or only meant to get us riled up so the heroes can stop it? 0 is "feel-good and/or comical" and 9 is "miserable lecture at you."
These are represented as (E,A). So, (0,0) is like… Care Bears. (6,2) would be around the ATLA level. (8,0) is Happy Tree Friends or Rainbow Factory.
If I assign codes to "Magical Girl" (idk… MG) and "Romance" (idk… RR) we can complete codes to Sailor Moon and Madoka Magica.
MG1RR3(5,2) and MG2RR3(7,5)
