Can you specialize in the UQ Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours)?
The University of Queenslandâs Bachelor of Veterinary Science Honours degree holds full American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accreditation. This means UQ vet graduates are eligible to sit the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE). AVMA accreditation is well recognized as the international benchmark for quality in veterinary education.
To pass the 360-question NAVLE, you require knowledge across many different species, which is why UQâs vet science program offers a comprehensive curriculum covering a wide range of veterinary disciplines.

Applying to veterinary schools in Australia: What is the Casper test?
Applying to veterinary schools in Australia? Youâll probably need to take the Casper test as part of the admissions requirements.
Australian veterinary schools recognize that skills and attributes such as resilience, critical thinking, and communication are essential for veterinarians, but are not always reflected in academic performance alone. The Casper situational judgement test will be used to select and identify applicants who are best suited to the rigours of veterinary science and the profession.
The Computer-based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics (CASPer) is a 90-minute, web-based aptitude test that assesses a studentâs decision-making skills, thought processes, and people skills through open-ended questions. This is whatâs known as a situational judgment test (SJT). It asks what you would do in a tough situation, and more importantly, why. This helps determine behavioral tendencies of applicants pursuing people-centered professions, like vet medicine!
University of Sydney veterinary medicine application tips
There are very few spots in Canadian veterinary programs, and because of that, admission is highly competitive. In fact, itâs one of the main reasons many Canadians choose to apply to AVMA-accredited veterinary degrees in Australia.
We recently held a webinar with University of Sydney Associate Professor Katrina Bosward, an academic advisor of admissions at the Sydney School of Veterinary Science in New South Wales.
She had a ton of tips for anyone interested in pursuing a vet degree. She covered both the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and the undergraduate Bachelor of Veterinary Biology/Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, including admissions requirements and what they look for in a veterinary candidate!
What is the NAVLE?
The veterinary medicine programs featured by OzTREKK are AVMA accredited, which means graduates of these programs are eligible to sit the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) along with graduates from AVMA accredited veterinary colleges in the United States and Canada.
After youâve graduated from your AVMA-accredited veterinary program, you must register with the Canadian National Examining Board (NEB). The NEB reviews the credentials of graduates of non-Canadian colleges of veterinary medicine who wish to obtain a license to practice veterinary medicine in Canada.Learn more about Australian vet degrees
Write the NAVLE
The NAVLE is a requirement to enter into private veterinary medical practice in North America. The exam is offered throughout North America and certain overseas sites at computer testing centers operated by Prometric, and is available during a four-week testing window in NovemberâDecember, and a two-week window in April.
You are strongly encouraged to wait until all clinical rotations have been completed before sitting the NAVLE. This usually means waiting until November â December as these are invaluable for providing the general clinical awareness and experience needed to pass the NAVLE.
Once you successfully complete the NAVLE, you will be granted a Certificate of Qualification (CQ). You must complete this exam within 2 attempts, otherwise an additional Clinical Proficiency Exam (CPE) is required.
The examination consists of 360 multiple-choice questions, answered on computer at a private testing center. Sixty of the items are unscored pretest items, but the identity of these items is not apparent, and they are dispersed throughout the test. Approximately 15% â 20% of the items on the NAVLE include graphic or pictorial information relevant to the item (photograph, radiograph, drawing, chart, etc.). The 360 questions are divided by activity (e.g., data gathering and interpretation; health maintenance and problem management) and species (small animal/large animal/equine plus a small amount of public health).
All NAVLE items are relevant to entry-level private clinical practice.
There is a total of 6.5 hours test time (6 blocks of 65 minutes each).
A total of 45 minutes of break time can be taken during the day (including lunch).
The pass mark is 70%.
Because of this large number of questions and the time constraints, being successful requires a sensible exam strategy and familiarity with the format (lots of practice tests!).

Can I work while studying veterinary medicine?
Weâre going to go âmomâ on you for a moment and caution that your studies should come first and that you should not rely on a part-time job to pay for tuition or living expenses.
With that said, short answer, yes. While on your Australian student visa, you can work up to 40 hours per fortnight (every 2 weeks, starting on a Monday) when your program is in session. You may also work unrestricted hours during your study breaks.

Why is CASPer important? CASPer will provide universities will a more complete view of you and your skills, beyond book smarts!
For that reason, it is required by some Australian vet schools as part of the admissions process. These schools recognize skills and attributes such as resilience, critical thinking, and communication using the Casper test in lieu of an interview.
The Melbourne Veterinary School, Sydney Veterinary School, and the UQ Veterinary School use Casper for their admissions SJT. These universities will request eligible applicants to complete the SJT after they receive an offer letter to their vet programs, although applicants are welcome to write the test before receiving an outcome.

This story is a continuation of Melbourne Veterinary Science Open Day â Part 2
Whatâs it like to be a student at the University of Melbourne Veterinary School? Meet Ashley, a former OzTREKK student who volunteered to walk us through her experience at Melbourne Veterinary Science Open Day.
After I had my horse fill, we moved on to the exciting part of the campus, the radiology room! This room really excites me as there are so many machines and neat technology.
Across the hall from these two rooms is a padded recovery room for large animals. This is for when they are recovering from anesthesia, they have a safe place to wake up. It is padded all the way around so if they stumble to their feet and fall, they are protected by a soft landing. There was a Melbourne Veterinary School student volunteering to explain how this room works.
They also had a display of x-rays for the public to see, and professors there to show the different bones in the pictures. They also had lead aprons for people to try on to see how heavy they actually are.
There was also an atom infant incubator set up for people to see how newborn animals are incubated if born with problems.
Open Day was very interactive for the public, children and future students to be involved. They had a station set up to learn how to administer IV fluids as well as learn how to bandage paws.
We started to get hungry so we ventured out to the lawn for barbecued sausage from the Veterinary Students Society of Victoria (VSSV) barbecue. The weather had once again changed and now it was about 25 degrees and sunny! While we were eating lunch, Edgarâs Mission Group had one of their pigs for show. We got to enjoy âPollyâ the pig beg for treats and make little kids laugh.
