“or…not.”
“i just.... what? i’m confused. i don’t know what just happened.”
‘ to try and find my golden list of the best guys and girls on campus to sleep with so i have a good cycle of people to go round fucking. so far, i have valentina and valencia on there…that’s about it. ‘
“the male population ain’t capable of much, so... i understand why you only have val and val on your list.”
“i’m probably the best sneaker i know. small, limber, manipulative. i’ve truly got it all.”
“then we’re gonna have a blast. just let me know when you’re available.”
“alrighty, list ‘em. what are you thinkin’?”
“i’ve got some mj that’s needing to be used. just a wonderful way to start off anything - she’s the reason that i can make semi-decent art. don’t worry if you haven’t before, i’m a great teacher when it comes to first time students. after that, the fun kicks in. you any good at sneaking around?”
“well, it is saturday. i think the weekends are truly a shining moment for the bad influencers, no?”
“i think you’re right in that assumption. i’ve already got a few things in mind that can liven up this weekend.”
was it weird to say a boy was pretty? val didn’t think so, particularly not right now when one of the most beautiful guys she’d ever seen was sat in front of her. how she’d ended up with him was a mystery and a mere reality check when they broke up; she’d never been sure if she actually deserved him. “you are a good boyfriend, don’t say that. we both have our moments but you treat me so well when we’re together,” val soothed him, her hand moving to gently play with his hair now that it was within reach. “i don’t know if we’ll ever know how to be okay. whether it’s just one of us, or both and this entire relationship was doomed from the start. i don’t believe in fate but i do believe in gravity and sometimes i think you’re mine,” she admitted. “we ground eachother but not always in the best ways.”
austin knew he didn’t deserve val. he’d been bad to her, even if she didn’t see it that way, and she didn’t deserve it. maybe if he’d treated her like the queen she was, then their relationship wouldn’t always be on the rocks. yet, despite knowing all of this, he found it difficult to change. but he wanted her. he wanted her so bad. austin’s hand moved to rest against her knee, giving it a gentle squeeze as she spoke to him. “star-crossed lovers.” a sad, sarcastic smile adorned his pierced lips as he stared at her, shaking his head once. “even with all the bullshit, val, i... i don’t see myself with anyone but you. you’re always on my mind, even when i don’t want you to be. you’re the most beautiful girl i’ve ever met. everything about you draws me in and i can’t even function sometimes because you make me that happy. you’ve got my heart. that’s why i keep coming back. but...” there is was. it was always that stupid but. “i don’t know. all i even fucking want is for you to be happy, and if that isn’t with me...”
“welll, then you could be my bad influence. sounds like a fair trade.”
“i hope you’re as good at your job as i am at mine. i heard that i tend to be a pretty persuasive individual with a knack for corrupting.”
“which part? the sleeping with alex? ruining your chance with rowan? pushing her over? the break-up in the first place? i mean take your pick, it’s been hideous all the way through,” val sighed through a tone of sad amusement, moving to sit down on the arm of her couch in front of austin.
austin found himself crouching down in front of her when she sat on the couch, leaning forward onto his elbows. he could honestly say he had done worse, but he wasn’t going to voice that. instead, he gave her a smile that reflected her tone. “i’m sorry too.” he finally spoke, reaching a reach up to rub at his scruff. “i don’t blame you for any of that, by the way. okay, maybe i do for being mean to rowan, but the rest i don’t. it’s my fault that all of it happened.” austin admitted. it wasn’t easy for him to do, but that bubbling guilt was starting to rear its head. “i’m not a good boyfriend, val. i’m the reason that you aren’t smiling, i’m the reason we broke up, the reason you slept with alex, and i hate it. i wish that... i just wish that we knew how to be okay.”
“what, do you need a good influence around?”
“well i’d be lying if i said no. i think everyone needs a good influence. i also think everyone needs a bad influence. to balance them out. you need a bad influence, too.”
‘ i’m really unimpressed with the level of freshmen guys ucf let in this year, not one has been able to hit it right yet. ‘
“why are you messing around with freshmen, though?”
leaning back against the door for a moment of support, valentina began walking even slower behind austin and attempted to bide her time. however, that didn’t seem to be something he was interested in. “i’ve been thinking about everything that happened the other night, and i keep going over it all and it really didn’t go right. in fact, it was all wrong and i feel fucking shitty for it.”
he turned to face her, his eyes watching her as she spoke. her words surprised him, austin not having expected it. val had owned up to her mistakes a lot, but he didn’t expect her to apologize for the night before. “can i just ask you why? why did it happen?”
“i like to think so. i’m not exactly the type that loves unpredictability… but thanks.”
“see, i’m pretty much the exact opposite of that. maybe that’s why i’m not good at school. you seem like you’d be a good influence, though.”
“it’s easy to be confident when you’re consistent.”
“you seem like the type to be consistent. good for you.”
it wasn’t like val had been waiting for austin to turn up, except that she had and whilst no-one was in the apartment, she’d decided it was time to open up to austin about how she was feeling. waiting a couple more seconds so she didn’t at least look as if she were waiting, val swung open the door and smiled awkwardly at her ex. “hey, just uh, come in?” she invited him, gesturing with her arm for him to come past and she closed the door behind him.
he was almost tempted to turn back around so that he could pull himself together mentally, but he’d made his presence known. not even moments after considering to walk away did she answer the door, knocking that plan completely out of the park. “hey.” he acknowledged val with a nod, his arms crossing over his chest as he slowly made his way inside. “what’s up?” there was no point in beating around the bush.
“i made hella bank in tips at olive garden today and i’m gonna make some more tonight at the bar so honestly, i feel like i should be inducted into the official brown boys club. or like maybe if you’re looking for a target sugar daddy, i’m your man.”
“.....what?”
she wanted to talk. those words always made austin wary. he never knew what it would be this time. val was a wildcard, something he both loved and hated. he reluctantly agreed to meet up with her, not sure what he was in for. he, of course, hoped it would be something good, but he wasn’t holding his breath. his eyes glanced down at his phone as he waited for her to answer her door, hating the way his stomach clenched occasionally with nerves. “open up, val, it’s me.”
“i’ve got a new manicure, a new planner, new textbooks, and a new lease on life. ready for a got-damn 4.0 this semester, bitches.”
“someone’s feeling confident. i hope that doesn’t expire by the end of the year. it’s always easy to say that in the beginning.”
