I know I just made this post where Andrew takes Aaron’s place in a game, but I already can’t get follow-up ideas out of my head.

Andrew is still exclusively allowed to play as goalkeeper in games

Practices too because he can already be dangerous enough in goal at practices when he’s in the wrong mood

But night practice is a different story

Remember “Perfect your own performance and it won’t matter who is in goal.”

Remember how Kevin doesn’t think the goalie matters when you’re practicing?

Kevin tells Andrew to get one of Aaron’s practice racquets and act as a backliner, pressuring Neil and trying to pick the ball off of him

Andrew would never go along with it if he didn’t want to actually get to face someone instead of standing in net

So he starts grabbing one of Aaron’s racquets every night and acts as a backliner for Neil and Kevin to practice against

Andrew enjoys night practice a lot more when he gets to knock Kevin over

But of course he pretends he doesn’t and is only doing this for the benefit of pathetic Kevin and pathetic Neil who care so much about exy

No one else finds out about Andrew’s new role at night practice for a long time

Until one day Aaron goes to grab his racquet at practice and one of them is broken

He asks who broke his racquet and no one says anything

Aaron looks to Andrew, thinking he probably did it just to be an asshole

Andrew says it was Kevin’s fault

He thinks it’s true

If Kevin hadn’t been showboating so much, Andrew wouldn’t have gotten pissed off and slammed Aaron’s racquet against the court wall

Aaron is still sure Andrew just broke it to be an asshole because why would Andrew even be near his racquets anyways?

He knows trying to reason with Andrew is hopeless though, so he glares at Andrew, then grabs his other practice racquet

Neil, Kevin, and Andrew don’t breathe a word about Andrew practicing a position he’ll never play

The Foxes face Breckenridge again and Breckenridge’s players are just as aggressive

Everyone’s getting knocked around

Aaron’s striker slams him shoulder-first into the wall

It takes a second, but Aaron gets back up

Aaron is doing a convincing job of pretending he isn’t hurting

But Andrew can see through it from the sidelines

Because Andrew has experience watching Aaron for injuries

And seeing when Aaron is in pain and trying to pretend he isn’t

At half, Andrew tells everyone how Renee is playing goal again second half

Everyone argues, especially Wymack, Kevin, and Neil

Andrew insists they can have Renee in goal or no one

Wymack and the team think it’s just Andrew being his usual aggressively indifferent self

But then Neil and Renee get a clue that there’s more to it when Andrew ignores Neil’s arguments and hauls Aaron off

Andrew tells Aaron they’re switching equipment and uniforms

Important add-ons, though, as someone who’s done policy work on this: 

It’s July 16, not just the start of July.

988 can not only be used as the suicide hotline, but for any sort of mental health or substance use crisis situation. As opposed to 911, the goal of 988 is that when dispatch is necessary, you’ll be met with a trained crisis response team rather than the police. The police will only be involved if there is an immediate threat to safety, which has almost never occurred in pilot programs - in one of the most well-known, Denver STAR, (which a lot of y’all seem to be familiar with) the police has actually never been called for backup. We’re hoping that this is going to get more individuals directed towards help rather than a prison cell.

Eight Rules For Writing -- from a long ago piece I wrote for The Guardian.

1 Write.

2 Put one word after another. Find the right word, put it down.

3 Finish what you're writing. Whatever you have to do to finish it, finish it.

4 Put it aside. Read it pretending you've never read it before. Show it to friends whose opinion you respect and who like the kind of thing that this is.

5 Remember: when people tell you something's wrong or doesn't work for them, they are almost always right. When they tell you exactly what they think is wrong and how to fix it, they are almost always wrong.

6 Fix it. Remember that, sooner or later, before it ever reaches perfection, you will have to let it go and move on and start to write the next thing. Perfection is like chasing the horizon. Keep moving.

7 Laugh at your own jokes.

8 The main rule of writing is that if you do it with enough assurance and confidence, you're allowed to do whatever you like. (That may be a rule for life as well as for writing. But it's definitely true for writing.) So write your story as it needs to be written. Write it honestly, and tell it as best you can. I'm not sure that there are any other rules. Not ones that matter.

Words to Describe Hair

This began as a guide to describing Afro/curly hair but of course, I got carried away. From look and texture of hair, colors and various styles, this guide serves as a thesaurus of sorts for hair, as well as pointers for use in your writing.

Know the meaning behind head wear and why it’s worn, when and by whom, such as a Native Nation’s headdress, before bestowing a character with it.

Afro - Curly - Straightened

There are many varieties of braids, twists & Afro hair styles; have some more!

African/Black Hair: Natural, Braids and Locks

African Hair: Braiding Styles 10 African Types

Describing Black (Afro) hair:

Appropriative Hairstyles: Keep in mind that Afro styles should be kept to those in the African Diaspora, such as dreadlocks, cornrows + certain and many braided styles.

Tread carefully describing Afro hair as “wild” “unkempt” “untamed” or any words implying it’s unclean or requires controlling.

“Nappy” and “wooly” are generally words to stay away from, the first having heavy negative connotations for many and the latter, though used in the Holy Bible, is generally not acceptable anymore and comes off as dehumanizing due to Animal connotations.

There are mixed feelings on calling Black hair “kinky.” I’m personally not opposed to the word in itself and usage depends on the person’s race (I’m more comfortable with a Black person using it vs. a Non-Black person) as well as their tone and context (if it’s used in a neutral or positive tone vs. negatively/with disdain). Get feedback on your usage, or simply forgo it.

Hair Colors and Style

Writing Tips & Things to Keep in Mind:

Combination Words: Try combining words to illustrate look of hair. A character with springy coils that dance across her shoulders with every movement, the man with thick silvery hair slicked back into a ponytail…

Mind Perspective: Depending on POV, a character might not know exactly what cornrows or a coiffure style is, at least in name, and it might make more sense if they described the hairdo instead. More defining terms might come from a more knowing source or the wearer themselves. One book I read described a girl’s afro puff as “thick hair pulled up into a cute, curly, poufy thing on top of her head and tied with a yellow ribbon.”

POC & Hair Colors: People of Color’s hair comes in all shades and textures. There are Black people with naturally blond and loosely-textured to straight hair, East Asian people with red hair, and so on. Keep that in mind when coding characters if you tend to rely on hair color alone to denote a character is white vs. a Person of Color.
