He was broader and taller than I remembered, but I hadn't stood close to him since we were kids. Now he towered over me, dark shadows strengthening the angular lines of his jaw and highlighting the sculpted shape of his arms.
" . . . Jackie Emerson," he said slowly, like he couldn't believe it.
I was surprised he even remembered. It wasn't even the same last name as my grandma, who had actually lived in town.
"Is that really you," he asked over the music, "Or did the shop fill with fumes and I'm having a hallucination?"
There was something contagious about the way his eyes sparkled, like they used to long ago when we were still friends. All the tiredness I’d been feeling on the drive suddenly evaporated.
"That’s me, Jackie the hallucination."
But his grin fell and his eyes darkened. “You shouldn’t be here.”
