Behind Every Success Story

Success is merely the top of the iceberg. What goes on below the surface is another story. Every one of us is dazzled by success. It is like the shiniest of trophies or the grandest of rewards that calls and beckons for us to come closer. But reaching for success does not happen in the blink of an eye. It is a rarely instantaneous gratification. That’s why so many give up on it before they are halfway through the process because that’s what it is: a process. It is a process that tests the determination of a person. It is a journey that sometimes takes a lifetime. No matter who you are or what you do, success is achievable. However, behind every success story is a story of struggles, trials, and difficulties. Many have been and many will be reduced to their lowest for the sake of success. Many will lose some only to win triumphantly in the end. All of these make success sweet, but the process can be a bitter pill to swallow. It is important then to remember that whatever it is that you are struggling with for the sake of a goal, nothing is impossible. You will get there as long as you take everything in stride and keep your eyes on your goal. Many would give up and turn their backs on their goals, making excuses or blaming other people. That’s not how you achieve success, not how you attract the good things in the universe to your favor. Keep in mind that behind every success story is an even bigger story about trials and challenges. Keep in mind that success is a continuous process. The Grace Beyond Every Plan and Resolution

Because the new year is fast approaching, many are getting their resolutions ready. All over the world, young or old, people make resolutions. Whether they achieve what they set out to accomplish is another matter. Many fail just as the new year is settling in. Why? Why are resolutions sometimes too difficult to fulfill? No matter how serious we are about our resolutions, it takes more than sheer determination to fulfill plans. Whether you want to quit smoking, start saving for an emergency fund, complete a degree, go on a much-deserved vacation, begin a new hobby, or learn to forgive someone who wronged you—nothing is easy without the grace and blessing of God. Every single person who has attained some level of success will attest to the power of grace. Whether you believe you receive grace or blessings from God or the universe, it doesn’t matter. What matters is knowing every plan or resolution comes from someone or something much, much larger than we are. Many of us start the new year feeling extremely positive about making a goal happen only to be crushed when things don’t go our way after some time. First of all, this happens to many of us, so if this happens to you, know that you are not alone at all. Second, there’s no sense in doing the same things over and over, examining why they don’t deliver the results we want. Why do some people achieve the plans they set out to accomplish at the start of the year, and why aren’t you one of those people? When you examine things closely, you see what is truly going on and you can decide from there how you want to proceed with your resolution. Then never underestimate the power of prayer. It is one of the most important treasures in life. Examine what you have and list what you want or where you want to be and then pray. The Magic of Beginnings

A few short weeks to go and it’s already year 2020. How exciting is that? A whole year is about to come to a close and a fresh one is about to begin. At this point of the year, what are we supposed to do to ensure we welcome nothing but the good vibrations of 2020? The magic of beginnings is real. That’s why there is what we call beginner’s luck. People all over the world believe in beginnings and the magic happens all throughout the year. New Year, however, is a special one. On New Year’s Eve, aside from the usual parties and family, friends, or office get-togethers, one thing is certain. Everybody is excited about the possible magic the new beginning will bring. Young and old, we all wonder about what the year has in store for us and whether or not it is our lucky year. Who doesn’t want magic and a fresh set of opportunities? When the two go together, the stars will align. However, nothing ruins good luck like an unpleasant past. Every tiny thing that goes around comes around. Every bad intention or action will haunt you one way or another. History haunts those who owe something to the past. Hence, you need to finish 2019 with a clean conscience and a happy, grateful heart—a clean slate so to speak. How do you start a year effectively? For starters, declutter and make space for the blessings to come. When you are full to the brim, there’s no way for you to accept new blessings since you will overflow. What and When to Ask from God

Many of us who have a relationship with God turn to him in prayer. Prayer is one the best ways to communicate with Him and let Him know our thoughts, our feelings, our intentions. Of course, God hardly needs us to tell Him all those things because He knows every tiny thing about us, including the number of hairs on our head. But voicing out what’s on our mind and in our heart help us foster a great relationship with God and allows us to express ourselves as freely as possible. What and when should we ask from God if God knows everything about us? First of all, prayer is not all about our petitions. It is also a chance for us to be thankful and to acknowledge the blessings we have in life. When we ask, we should welcome the plans of God and pray that whatever we ask for are in accordance to God’s will. We should ask God to enlighten us and show us the way rather than us taking the lead ourselves. We know nothing about the future and we seldom realize our purposes in life before they manifest to us; hence, making plans and doing what we think should happen is counterproductive to our overall growth us a person and as a soul. Furthermore, it is easy to ask for more without seeing what we already have. Therefore, never ask anything without first acknowledging the blessings in front of you. They are there for reasons maybe only God knows, but it is your job to be grateful and to use them as wisely as possible. Beyond our daily concerns, beyond our day-to-day life, there is a purpose for all of these, for everything around us, and for every happening in our life. Beyond our concerns and our plans, let us remember that God’s plans should come first. Hence, when you come to Him in prayer, be grateful for that purpose—whatever that may be—and ask that may He blesses your plans if they are in accordance to His. Beyond the Merrymaking for Christmas

Christmas is just around the corner. It’s hard to miss the excitement in the air and harder still to ignore the festive season. But just before we make it all about the gifts, the tree and the gatherings, let us ensure we understand why we celebrate Christmas. Obviously, we know we celebrate the birth of Christ on Christmas. We know the story—the star, the three wise kings, the shepherd boy, Bethlehem, and the baby Jesus in a manger. We know Mary’s story and that of Joseph as well. We know how they journeyed to protect themselves and Mary’s unborn child. We know how the angels announced the coming of the Messiah and how they celebrated his birth. We know Jesus was born in order to save mankind. We know God gave his son to us because of his love. That right there is the real meaning of Christmas—Jesus and the love of the Father in heaven. Time and time again, many of us forget about the real reason for Christmas. Instead, we devote time and effort on material representations of love or simply fall prey to the abundant temptations that take our focus away from Christ—shopping, parties, or travel. Material abundance is not wrong. Giving gifts is not wrong. Celebrating with family and friends is not wrong. But when we forget what Christmas is all about, that’s where we go wrong. Beyond the fanfare and the merrymaking on Christmas, let us remember Christ and be thankful for the gift of life and second chance that he bestowed on us. More importantly, let us remember the love of God the Father who gave us his son so that we will be saved. That is the grandest gift there is. When we love others and willingly sacrifice ourselves, especially our comfort and convenience, for others, we partake in the genuine meaning of Christmas. What Are You Grateful For?

Thanksgiving comes and goes every November. For many of us, it means spending time together with loved ones, family, and friends. It means lunch or dinner with the traditional turkey and endless chatter over a table of good food. For many of us, thanksgiving is an annual tradition that couldn’t be missed. What are you thankful for and how do you give thanks? Because the day is expected to be a busy one, before hitting the door or before getting up in bed, why not set intentions right and start the day in prayer—in thanksgiving? Before rushing to get last-minute items, why not remind ourselves what we are thankful for? When we are intentional about giving thanks, thanksgiving becomes more than just a tradition or an annual event to gather friends and family. When we take the time to express our gratitude, thanksgiving becomes more meaningful. Gratitude does not demand so much time and effort. First, let us be thankful to the one who made life possible—the one who created us and gave us purpose, the one who comes to our succor every single time we are challenged, the one who carries us through all the trials and joys in life, the one who gives us the wonderful people we are surrounded with. Let us be thankful to God. Let us also remember the people in our lives who are constantly there for us and say a prayer or two for them. Taking this a step further, writing notes or letters or emails is a wonderful way to give love and show appreciation. Before taking time to relax, let us make sure those who are important to us know just how much we appreciate them. We may not express our sentiments all the time, but let us take advantage of the day and make people feel extra special. You will be surprised how a simple gesture will result in even more blessings coming back to you! Aside from the people in our lives, let us be mindful of our circumstances and give thanks. Whatever situation we are in, there are lots of reasons to be grateful. Let us not limit ourselves to material blessings. There are blessings that are even more important like good health, peace of mind, and the ability to forgive. These and many other non-material things should be acknowledged. If you find yourself in a better position than others, extend help where you can. It makes gratitude tangible. It makes Thanksgiving Day even more special. Letting Go of Hurts and Graces

The new year always inspires us to change the unpleasant ways of our lives and become better version of ourselves. At the same time, we are inspired to make new plans and set new goals to accomplish within the year. Whether that is to save money, lose some undesirable weight, get out of our cocoon, and see the world, reach a milestone in our career or start a career, let go of vices, or forgive and make up with people we weren’t in good terms with last year, the new year is a fresh start—a time to reset our clocks and to clean up the slates. All of these wonderful endeavors are not always a walk in the park. As much as we want better, more beautiful things for ourselves, sometimes they can be a real challenge to accomplish. What can we do then when the goings get tough? What can we do when we are about to give in and go back to our vices, our resentments, and our hurts? What can we tell ourselves when the office promotion we have been working on suddenly seems impossible to reach? What can we do when we cannot forget the hurt other people caused us? What can we go when we can’t let go of the past? There are times too when we enjoy the wonderful things we received in previous years and become complacent or too comfortable in our comfort zones. What can we do to push ourselves out of that comfort zone and discover what greater things we can accomplish? Where can we turn to for inspiration? More importantly, why do we need to get ourselves unstuck? Letting go is never an easy thing to do. Whether you need to let go of painful stuff or whether you need to challenge yourself and let go of the comforts you are used to, both need effort, time, and prayer. After holding on to grudges for example, how do you move forward? After being an expert in something, how do you learn a new thing? First of all, let us remember that beyond all the things we have today, beyond our experiences, beyond our life, there is another life in eternity that matters more. There should be acceptance and gratitude in our hearts, and more importantly, we should empty ourselves so God can show us the way and pour forth his love and mercy. Next, whatever burdens us keeps us from getting where we should be. Whether we are attached to our colleagues too much or contented in our way of life, if something doesn’t move us toward the fulfillment of our purpose, it is time to let go. Let go then of hurts. Forgive and know that you deserve peace. Let go of what makes life a routine. Make a little change here and there. Life is beautiful. It should excite you the moment you open your eyes. It should remind you that you and your days are blessings from the Most High. Read the full article

Marriage Beyond the Changing Times

There was a time when marriage meant a lifetime commitment to someone. There was a time when divorce was the exception and not the rule. There was a time when real men stepped up to the plate and provided for the family no matter how young or uneducated he was. There was a time when women tended to the needs of the family first and foremost. Those times seem so long ago. There is the obvious need to make changes according to the demands of the times. Women now are inclined to work just as much as men, but that still doesn’t make them half the housewives and mothers they are. It just means they have more to take care of. But let us not deny that times have ushered in short-span marriages, some lasting only days and, worse, hours. Some rush into marriage only to end in divorce a short time after. There was a time when whirlwind romances were romantic. Now, they mostly end in a divorce. Why? Change is as constant as the ever-shifting sky. Why did marriages last in the past and they usually don’t these days? Can we, as a society, change the bad and keep the good? Can we change in order to become better people? What is so different about love in the past and love in the present? The more we advance in our understanding of the universe, the more we gain knowledge, the more we should know how to value people who truly matter to us. The more our inventions connect us, the more we should strengthen our relations. What is technology for if it cannot foster better relationships, if it will only take us apart? To advance is to be better. Why is the opposite happening to the very core of the family? Why are marriages falling apart? Love is the catalyst that moves our relationships. The Bible says, God is love, therefore when we follow God, He directs our affairs. Beyond the wedding day is a lifetime that should be spent together as one husband and wife, one unit in society. Beyond Challenges: Hope

Nobody ever said life is a walk in the park. Nobody ever has it easy. Even those who are sought after, rich, and powerful, they too are beset with all kinds of problems. The truth is, it’s not about how rich or poor a person is. Every one of us encounters problems because, whether we like it or not, problems are important parts of life. How can something challenging be important in life? Every challenge is meant to teach us something. Whether it is a lesson in honesty, humility, faithfulness or whether it is meant to teach us to love ourselves and forgive others, every challenge will teach us a lesson. Oftentimes we do not see the lesson while we are trying our best to survive the challenge. Sometimes we recognize the lesson only in hindsight. But it is always there, a lesson that is meant to make us better versions of who we are. Beyond challenges then, hope springs eternal—hope that we will survive every hurdle there is on our way and that we become who we are meant to be. The moment one challenge gets overwhelming, we can step back and take as much time as we need to gather ourselves, our wits, and our courage to continue. There is no need to rush, so take as much time-out as you need, but know that the journey must go on no matter the size of the challenge facing you. Just because challenges are important to our growth does not mean we are not allowed to rest and to gather our strength. We should do so without the need to explain or excuse ourselves. Rest is just as important for our personal growth. As they say though, the show must go on; hence, pick up yourself and face the music. Do know that there is hope beyond every challenge. Beyond Marriage

Marriage is a sacred covenant between two people and God. That it includes God makes it one of the most precious things in life. Sadly, too many people take it lightly. Why do more and more marriages end in divorce? Divorce used to be the exception; now, it seems to be the rule. Why? Once romance fades and all the butterflies in the stomach cease to flutter, what do we have left? More often than not, we have two people consumed by many different priorities and pressured by the standards set by society. Careers, children, finances, in-laws, habits (like smoking and alcoholism) all affect the quality of a marriage. Keeping up with the Joneses and showing off in social media are additional strains in the relationship. Unless we realize that beyond the wedding day there is an enormous responsibility for both husband and wife, perhaps the divorce rate will skyrocket some more. What is beyond every wedding? Whether you have a small and simple family affair or a grand, expensive event, beyond every wedding, the commitment to stay together and stay faithful through all that are yet to come should be in your heart. That’s what “through thick or thin” is all about. Obviously, marriage life is not a bed of roses. Even those who married their prince charming or their dream girls go through trials and challenges, but those very trials and challenges are not meant to separate what has been joined by the sacrament. Instead, those difficulties should keep husband and wife tighter together. It may look impossible, especially when one is so stressed out and ready to snap, but let us not forget the third person in the union—God. Beyond the vows, beyond husband and wife, someone else is there who is the most powerful. What can be so difficult if both husband and wife will seek his help, guidance, and blessing? Family

An African proverb says, “A family tie is like a tree, it can bend but it cannot break.” How true! Some things never change no matter how fast the world rotates on its axis, no matter how rushed our days are. The culture of digital nomadism has been emphasized by technological progress. The world has gotten smaller and smaller so much so that news from one corner of the world has lightning-fast tendency to be made known to other corners, and jet-setting is no longer just for the rich. While technology allows us to span the world quicker, it also has the power to tear us apart. Perhaps it’s safe to say there has never been so much restlessness in people than in our present time. Everybody just has to go somewhere, even if the end goal is only to gain approval from loyal followers online. This tears families apart. This tests shakes friendships to the core. Families and meaningful relationships suffer due to the effects of technology. It is disheartening to see how many have forgotten that the family is the basic unit of society. There are familial bonds that are ignored and unappreciated, but a family is a family no matter what. Beyond differences of opinion, the tie that holds together the family can never be broken. We may dislike members of our family, but in spite of ourselves, a family is a family. What can a family do then to protect its tie? If we all remember that beyond our individuality all of us are special and important members of a society, we would be better off. If we remember that beyond our dreams and ambitions there is a greater plan, we will be better off. If we remember the persons who are responsible for our present, the father and mother or the guardian who sacrificed something for our sake, we will be better off. Teaching Kindness

Billions of dollars are spent on education in America. We put a premium on the quality of education we can afford for our children. Yet education is not a guarantee that a child will do well in life. In fact, the best kind of education is not the education from within the classroom. The most important kind of education is the education at home, the education that teaches a child kindness and respect. Although math, languages, science, history, and art are important factors of our day-to-day life, they are not as important as humility, respect, and kindness. These are the first lessons that should be grilled into our children if we want them to be the best version of themselves. Education alone does not make a man kind and respectful. Some educated men are worse than the uneducated ones. Some educated men and women become greedy and selfish industry tycoons. Of course, not every educated man turns out that way, but money, status, and power oftentimes push people away from the real important things in life like family and faith. Children are like sponges. They easily absorb whatever is poured on them. Give them love and appreciation, and they reflect those back. Raise them in negativity and they spread the same to others. Children who grow up in abusive environments reflect those abuse and sometimes bully others to assert themselves. But children who are raised in love and positivity give the very same to others. Hence, when they receive the most important education at home, the more teachable and coachable they become in and out of the classroom, the better off they are in life. Teaching kindness simply means showing it. You can’t teach calm and scream at every time you get frustrated. When you want to teach patience, you have to be, first and foremost, patient yourself. Restoring Faith in Humanity

Every day we are bombarded with news of gun violence, terrorism, scandals, murders, and controversies. Sometimes being exposed to all types of media makes you feel helpless. It makes you feel disconnected from and angry with the people around you. We need to find some sort of inspiration to help us stay positive, to help us find our humanity again, and to let us stay true to our values and principles. One way to do this is to recognize and look for acts of humanity that gives us moral elevation. Moral elevation is the warm feeling in your stomach when we see others doing acts of courage and kindness. Sarina Saturn, a researcher from the University of Portland, says, “Moral elevation not only boosts our positive emotions, but it also promotes our love for our fellow human and inspires us to be better people. Indeed, making an effort to experience more moral elevation will restore our faith in humanity and encourage us to help other people.” Seeing others do good acts also drives us to take care of ourselves better too. We get encouraged to do right by others and make us focus away from the negatives in our life and in our surroundings to shift a more positive outlook. We need to infuse inspiration in our lives so we can protect our mental health and others’ mental health around us and help make the world around us a better place to live in. There are several ways we can do that. First, be careful how you expose yourself and others in social media. Avoid pointless arguing in the comments or chat groups or sharing negative content. Instead, make it a habit to post or share positive news from the world. Always check if what you share or post will be more hopeful or harmful. Second, volunteer for a cause that you believe in. It does not have to be something big, just something doable and one that you’re passionate about. Hearing that “thank you” from people you help or from your fellow volunteers is enough to keep you inspired. Along the way, the one you helped can even pay it forward by also doing their share to help others in need. And lastly, try a little mindfulness. It may seem simple, but this packs a punch. Remember, someone is going through something and not everything you hear or read on the news or in social media is necessarily true. Beyond Parenthood

The roles parents play in the lives of their children are unlimited; meaning, the roles are not limited by time, place, or anything else. Once a person becomes a parent, he or she has gained a responsibility that will last a lifetime. Parents are the first teachers of their child. They are the role models. They are the living examples of what is and is not good behaviors. Parents are the source of a child’s confidence, faith, and courage. When a child knows that his or her parents have faith in what he or she can do, there is security in the child’s life. When he or she is taught and shown the importance of faith, he or she will most likely live in faith. Raising a child goes beyond the basic necessities of a tiny human, like food, clothing, shelter, and education. Raising a child means more than providing for his or her material needs. The needs that are far more important to a child’s well-being are not material things. Every child—actually, every person big or small—has emotional needs that are more pressing than physical needs. We all long for a friend, a companion, or a confidante. A child is no exception. He or she needs love, attention, security. Every parent must extend his or her patience, understanding, and kindness. It is not easy to be a child. To want something and be denied, to wonder about something and receive no explanation are not easy. Hence beyond parenthood, there is the responsibility to be there for a child in whatever way is necessary. One cannot be a parent all the time. Sometimes a parent has to be counsellor, sometimes a friend. Beyond parenthood, a parent still has to be there for his or her child. A parent has to pave the way for the child to follow whether that way is toward a dream, a goal, or toward the most beautiful destination of all—Christ. Read the full article

The Kindness of Strangers

Kindness is not a lost cause. My book “Saying Thanks and Beyond, Is Saying Thank You Enough?” speaks to the acts of kindness people offer you and what you say or do comes back in the same way it is sent out. Sometimes, in our hurried lives, one beset with concerns about making a living and accomplishing goals we set for ourselves, we see the bad and ugly more than we see the good and beautiful. However, circumstances have a way of putting us right where we should be just so we realize how truly blessed we are. There are those who are knocked down on their feet and find themselves struggling to get up only to find the kindness of strangers extended to them in many different forms of help. There are those who lose their health only to gain compassion and friendship from the most unlikely people. There are those who get lost in life only to find the guiding hand of a new face. There are those who are without much material possession but have a treasure trove of family and friends for support. Indeed, the world works in amazing, mysterious ways, just like God does. God never leaves us alone to bear our burdens. Sometimes he uses strangers to show us the way or to remind us that we will always be cared for. Imagine people who leave their home country in search for a better life somewhere else. These people often start with the most minimal resources—a few clothes, a small room or apartment, a little pocket money. Yet somehow they always find people who are willing to welcome them or willing to give them a chance at making a living. Somehow, they always find people to group with, people to call family in a new place. Sometimes too we meet people who inspire us to be better versions of ourselves. These are the people who cannot help but be positive lights in the world. They help others sometimes without even knowing it. Once we are the recipient of the kindness and goodness of others, the best way to pay it back is to pay it forward. Somewhere out there someone just like you is in dire need of something. Someone out there needs kindness extended to them. Paying kindness forward keeps the chain going, and if we all contribute in our own ways, the world will be full of kindness before long. The Joy Beyond the Material World

The pull of capitalism is strong wherever we go. Young and old, rich and poor, men and women—all of us need and want material things. Capitalism is quick to feed our needs and most especially our wants, so much so that there are those who have hoarding habits, impulse buying, and even kleptomania (or just plain theft), not to mention credit card debts or debts in general. Materialism is so widespread that it has become our way of life. The pursuit of happiness is now synonymous to the latest gadget, the trendiest clothing and fashion accessories, the grandest vacation, the most number of likes in social media platforms, among many others. Simplicity is now hard to come by. Aside from all these, we are in a constant rush. Twenty-four hours is not enough anymore. Whenever possible, we’ll take on more and more tasks in order to make more and more money. Rest is a vague concept, and sleep is not of prime importance anymore. This is the material world that we live in today. Materialism is not inherently evil. Nothing is wrong about needing and wanting things. After all, we are in a physical world. However, the moment we allow materialism to rule us, that is a different story altogether. It takes us away from simplicity and removes joy and tranquility from our lives. Abundance is a wonderful blessing, but it does not mean materialism. One can be blessed abundantly and still live a simple and contented life. One can have so much yet remain humble. Beyond materialism is a better way of living, one not ruled by spur-of-the moment buys or influenced by the Joneses. Beyond the physical world and every little thing we value so much is one simple truth: all of these do not last forever, even us.
