Rosetta Lucas Quisenberry, must tell this story because it is an evil that existed and dramatically shaped the lives of black people in America. Stereotyping a people has existed since biblical times and unfortunately is the most lasting impression that works insidiously, influencing our reactions to a diverse people or culture. Based on recent history, our country cannot afford to continue this conscious and/or unconscious attitude. Coming from slavery and our self-esteem beginning to grow and blossom is when this racist attack occurs. Boy, oh boy, how we got screwed over! Both men and women were pictured with huge thick red lips, this has a diabolical hidden sexual agenda behind it. The black woman was always pictured with a head rag to show shame for her hair and for herself. This was done to lower the black woman’s self-image and self-esteem. My first book in this series titled “A Saga of the Black Man, Part 1” has been listed on the website Expanding Our Minds Through Knowledge, Enlightening Books. This was discovered by my niece Sherica Johnson and verified by a phone conversation with her mother Sallie Johnson. Personally, I felt as if I had won an Academy Award two times. First, because I believe in myself and self-published the book. Secondly, because I have been placed on a list with some of the most highly respected writers in our nation’s history.
Upon reaching my 50th birthday, I realized I had more time behind me than perhaps in front of me and it was time to bring this dream into reality. Also, I realized if I did not tell this story (Saga), then who would. The generations that follow me must come to know their true history and the experiences their parents, grandparents and forefathers have lived though and continue to endure.
We must grapple with these facts that are now coming to light. We acknowledge that some persons in our society were out to destroy our race psychologically my murdering our “spirit” while destroying our human essence (self-respect) and self-esteem (self-worth) through very hostile stereotypes.
