Your average, run-of-the-mill wooden baseball bat. What is this stuff staining the end, though? Donât question it; Itâs definitely not blood. Hopefully.
ă A Sense of Incompatibility â Closed | Warrenă
Perhaps it was fortunate that Umeko had her back turned away from Warren, for when she heard the flirtatious words that escaped his lips, her expression raised into something that was better left unseen. A twitch of a smile crept onto her face as Umeko arched her back into a straight posture. Shoulders square to her hips, and hands properly placed in her lap in front of her cradling her text, Umeko didnât give Warren the satisfaction of her gaze. Instead, she lifted her head and stared out towards the clock of the Square, eyes fixated on the ever-ticking hands and omnipresent eyes of the Monobear face that decorated it.
Umekoâs eyes remained shut, drinking in the scent of the air around her. She shut the book in her hands with a sudden snap, silencing the crickets around them for a brief moment. The Class Representative filled the silence between them with her low, melodious voice.
âJust the nature of the beast, indeed.â
Her english, though accented, was fluent and near flawless. Truly something to be expected of a young, model student. Finally rewarding the Automotive Designer with her eyes, Umeko glanced backwards at Warren, the corners of her mouth arched upward into a coy, but foreboding smile.
âHow we decide to spend our time on this island is ultimately up to our own discretion, and likewise, so to are the beasts in which we choose to share that time with. Making time to learn who your company is might be more beneficial to you in the future than it would be harmful.â
She brought a hand up to the hair that obscured her face and tucked the hair in her eyes away behind her ear, a manner common to the young rep that was entrancing and curious all at the same time. When she returned her eye contact to Warren, the gaze in her eyes was oddly serious, more than it was humorous.Â
âWhat makes you think I would want to kill you anyway, Warren-kun? I donât think youâre my type.â
A pause. Perhaps one that was far longer than it needed to be filled the atmosphere around them. Umeko stood up at her own words and brushed her skirt off. It almost made it seem like she was going to walk away with such a frightening statement lingering in the air, that was, until she turned to look at him and offered him a small peace sign.
âJust kidding! Fleeting humor, I apologize.â
He doesnât know if perhaps itâs the tone of her voice, or the way she so eloquently words herself to disguise what felt like ice on the back of his neck when she spoke. He seeâs her look at him, catches his eye contact from a side glance and a smile seems to all but curl on her lips as she practically jests about killing the Automotive designer, and it didnât help he broke from the Japenese the were both speaking to clarifying herself in English. Damn good English at that.
The hairs on the back of his neck may as well have curled up and died in that moment, internally setting himself into a panic. Why though? He larger for sure, and if anything suddenly became violent, would she really be able to fight back? Was he really considering murder the longer he looked at her? He gets lost in her words, and the struggle going on behind closed doors. All it takes is that soft chuckle and flash of a grin to bring him back to reality, and he manages a smirk, eyes narrowing just a bit.
His heart was starting to slow down, and his palms didnât feel so sweaty once her playful taunt reached his heads. He looks to the ground, right at his Oxfords as a weak chuckle escapes past the thin line of his lips, raising his head to look up at the sky that once was a brilliant peach hue, darkened to shades of purples and blues in what feels like a matter of moments. She walks away, and his eyes are glued on the Class Representative, how her skirt shifted in the faint breeze, obsidian locks draped down her modest form as sheâs all but slowly becoming a fleeting form in the distance. She stops long enough to give him that smile though.
And he canât help but feel like itâs fake as shit.
âConsider me disappointed tâere as much. Though maybe thatâs a gift I should be thankinâ ya for-- guess weâll just never know whichâa the two I lean more towards, Miss Miyamoto.â
ă A Sense of Incompatibility â Closed | Warrenă
Of all the people he suspected may be out and about in the dwindling hours, the Class Representative was certainly rather low on the tier. Of course, perhaps it wouldâve been wiser to stop making assumptions about his classmates, after all it seem liked it was easy for them to hide being something they were not. Not that he had any room to talk of course, he was aware that it was increasingly apparent as of late that with the right motivation, anyone could be a monster. Hysteria only needs a little push after all.Â
âWarren, Wyse, Gaijin, the choice is yours really. Any and all choices are correct in their own right.â
He shugs his jacket over broad shoulders, rolling his neck a bit with an unsatisfied hiss before gray eyes wonder down to a pair of crimson. He seeâs the book, a familiar title to him though only because he was once friends with an engineer who adored fictional books of such genre, and it seems like itâs enough to get him to smile, even if not the strongest.
âI had a feeling someone would be out and about reading the works of one Yasutaka Tsutsui, and I just had to harass them for their good taste. Not enough of that going around these daysâ Good taste, I mean, yaâknow, plenty of harassment and wotânot.â
Smooth, Wyse. He scratches at his neck and chuckles, shrugging a bit as he remained on the girlâs side, not yet taking a set.Â
âFleeting humor, I apologize. I was working on a few things in my room and couldnât find the ability to put my head to rest. Thought perhaps the breeze would help. Iâm not opposed to company though, especially one such as yourself. This seat wouldnât happen to be taken would it? Itâd be a shame otherwise.â
Umeko couldnât hold back the smile that tempted her lips at the attempt at humor that Warren preceded their conversation with. Umeko brushed the hair away from her eyes and tucked it behind her ear, taking a seat back down on the bench she was previously sitting at. She nodded in approval at his request to join her, a tender expression shielding something else behind her eyes.
âHow can I deny the company of someone familiar with Tsutsui-senseiâs work? Iâm by myself at the moment, so please, Warren-kun, your company is welcome.â
A proper conversation, it seemed to be now. Umeko opened the book once again, crossing her ankles as she looked down at it, the overhead streetlamp above them casting a darkened haze over her eyes. For a moment, the only sound filling the space between them was the ambient sounds of the ocean and the quiet symphony of crickets in the flowerbeds. Umeko glanced towards Warren, her fingers delicately turning pages as she read the characters down each one. After a few minutes, Umeko finally spoke up and broke the silence.
Her question was poised with genuine curiosity, but it was trailed with a strange sense of trust. Perhaps it was incriminating for the Class Representative, or perhaps it was a simple question of curiosity based off their unfortunate circumstances.Â
âYou seem rather unconcerned for yourself at the moment, Warren-kun. Do you think it wise to share the company of a student you barely know after everything weâve got through?â
âI have my engineer to thank for that. He loved the stuff, wouldnât let me leave one night until I cracked the first few pages. itâs a pretty good read, no arguments there.â
Itâs only until sheâs agreed to having company that he joins her, walks around the back, and takes his seat on the opposing side, though not too far from her person. One arm is thrown lazily over the back of the bench, the other resting lazily over his knee which is crossed over his lap, inhaling heavily as the breeze lulls him into a calm. Itâs perhaps the first real content feeling since heâs gotten on this island, strange considering as of late he feels heâs put a student to death. The nail in the proverbial coffin is that it had to be done, but it doesnât make him feel any less like he has a whole lot of blood on his hands-- he starts to wonder if deja vu is beginning to wash over him.
At her inquiry though, he opens his eyes, and looks over to her.Â
He spends the first few moments in silence, debating on just how to go about answering something he knew very well she was right on. She could jab his throat with say, a box cutter hiding in her bra or something outlandish like that, and really no one would be any the wiser to the situation. Is that not how Uzaki died? Stella?Â
âDove, you answered your own question. I think at this point it hardly matters how well we get to know each other. We donât have time to be pals like perhaps we could have, nobody does. So, I opt to live in the moment of âright nowâ. If I die--which letâs be clear, Iâd like to live to be a bitter old man on my rocker yellinâ for kids  to get off my lawn--than really thatâs just the nature of the beast isnât it? We started this mess, now we opt to play along.â
He rubs the back of his neck, not able to really look her in the eye as he found himself lost in thought. He remembers home, remembers the sound of his mentorâs voice. Thereâs even a face he clings to, slender and beautiful, kissed by the sun with light eyes that he swore looked like sunlight, dressed to kill, and for a brief blip of time, he feels the heavy pressure of despair on his shoulders.
He never lets things show this much, but itâs never dawned upon him heâd be faced with the fact he may never see the ones he loves most ever again.
Heâs quick to pick up a smile though, leaning just a bit in the girlâs direction, eyes wandering back to herâs.
âBesides, if youâre goinâ to kill me, at least the last thing I saw would be a lovely face.â

How many hours had it been since the trial had ended? The cool breeze kissed her face as her vermilion gaze lifted from the book in her hands to gaze up at the flickering lights of the Citizenâs Square. It was bizarre to see the Class Representative sitting out on one of the benches in the square, rather than tucked away in bed as how so many others seemed to be. Perhaps it was a result of being unable to sleep after such a long night of turmoil and despair.Â
Umekoâs thumb rubbed against the spine of the book in her hands gently as her gaze shifted from the streetlight she sat beneath to the dark blue horizon of the ocean. The sound of chirping crickets kept the quiet of the island bearable, and to the young woman, it was like a symphony of familiarity that almost felt comforting. Her eyes returned to the contents of the book in her lap, the characters on the spine reading Paprika on it. Umeko returned to the fictional world that she had enveloped herself in for a short time, up until the sound of approaching footsteps caught her ears. She lifted her gaze to find the wide silhouette of the foreigner that she had only briefly spoken to in trial.
âAh, Good evening. Youâre Warren-kun, correct?â
The young man in front of her was Warren Wyse; The Automotive Designer that she only knew of through the information on her now shortening school roster on her guidebook device, and through their brief interaction in the courtroom. She counted neither as a proper dialogue between them, because how well can one get to know someone else when they are busy condemning a person to death? She stood up from her seat on the bench and took a momentary step forward, engaging her attention with her company.
âWhat brings you out here so suddenly, if I might ask? I assumed that everyone had gone to try and sleep after tonightâs events.â
Of all the people he suspected may be out and about in the dwindling hours, the Class Representative was certainly rather low on the tier. Of course, perhaps it wouldâve been wiser to stop making assumptions about his classmates, after all it seem liked it was easy for them to hide being something they were not. â TRIAL âĄAbracadabra | RE: Seiji, Umeko, and Hayato.
With a crack of his neck, and an exasperated sigh, the brunette wastes no time with meaningless introductions or a few short words for the dead. Honestly heâs not really in the mood for it all. He hears whatâs being thrown around in the courtroom by Seiji, Hayato, and Umeko, and calloused fingertips stroke at a stubble chin. When thereâs a brief air of silence, he decides to squeeze into the conversation, starting it by flashing a picture of the knife beside Stella, hands firmly grasping the sides of the podium afterwords for support.
âMurder weapon, found it tossed a wayâs down the hall from the girlâs body. The knife is no doubt covered in the victimâs blood, so I donât think it was used in any sortâa retaliation. The lilâ shit came by, piked her in the spine a good couple of times, and likely left right after to take careâa themselves. Now, before ya ask why Iâm so sure they did, I did a few laps âround the damn island lookinâ fer clues because I donât really GOT a damn choice, ya know, murder bear loominâ over our heads and not with the promiseâa milk and cookies, and I found some blood poolinâ in the lobby of the bathhouse.â
He leans up, no longer putting his weight primarily on the podium, and crosses his arms against his chest.Â
âDidnâ find anymore in the restâa the place, which leads me to believe our culprit probably went to take a dip, and get all the blood off âem. âCourse, with all this talk âbout a crystal ball, and how it wasnât confirmed whether or not it was Stellaâs blood on it to be exact, could it be safe to guess maybe she DID get a hit in on the bastard, and they may have suffered an injury in result? Itâs a blunt object, so of course the only place I can think of where a strike on the dome with that thing would produce blood, is the skull.â
â TRIAL âĄAbracadabra | RE: Hiroshi, and Chika.
His attention filters briefly over the other girl, easily perhaps one he can say he hasnât seen before. He squints for a moment, trying to wait for a name to match up to a face, but it seems he comes up on empty in that department. With a roll of his shoulders, gray eyes meet very briefly with hers.
âStella, Crystal-Gazer, Talks in third person, Stabbed about six times in the spine, blood all over the place, but no obvious point to who couldâve done it. Thatâs the condensed version anyway, gonnae have to wait for the extended addition once we piece more clues together Iâm afraid. Nowââ
With an unceremonious âTHUD!â, does the automotive designer lean up against the podium, chin resting in his palm while he looks ahead, processing Okadaâs words as the cogs slowly turned in his head. Heâs rightâ this trial would fuck off right quick if someone came into the court room with an obvious dent in the noggin. If only, if only, if only.
âSâwhat I was âfraid of honestly. All in good wishinâ that someone just confesses to head trauma yeah? inappropriate joke aside, itâs hard to think how else the crystal ball, thingie, would be involved in this entire ordeal. I mean in truth, she couldâve held the bloody thing in âer hands when the bastard took her down, but thatâd possibly imply she was expecting a visit, or was already with the person. All in theory of course, just trying to find out the bad end here is all. Thereâs no trail that implies it was in the blood either, since I donât think it was found anywhere near the body.â
He runs a hand through his hair, grumbling a few improper obscenities under his breath.
âWould probably be a smoother process if anyone else speaks up about findinâ any other trinkets, and clues, that could well- get this shit-of-a-trial over with right quick.â
â TRIAL âĄAbracadabra |RE: Umeko, Hiroshi, and Hayato.
âGuess you would know thatâs âweirdâ more than anyone in the courtroom kid, but truth be told with that in mind, it certainly reinforces Okada and Iâs theory that she definitely had a somewhat âtrustingâ relationship with the culprit, or, in the very least, was expecting them for a visit. Still doesnât do shit for us though.â
Nails rake at stubble once more, sighing a bit. He needed a damn shave, on the list of things to do after this hot mess was over. He flips his guidebook open to follow along with the list of clues found, eyes slowly rising to meet a pair of crimson across the courtroom from him. The school rep right? Umeko something or another. He clicks his tongue, shifts a bit in position, and soaks in the clue she happens to read aloud to him just as he gets to it.Â
âSo letâs say this a hypothetical big-kick-in-the-ass clue for us, and not some vague ramblings of a girl who likes shiny stuff. âThose in red are a threat, stay aware.â I can think about a good handful of you all who wear red. We got Okada, YouâUmeko, euuuhhhâŠ..HâŠHarumi? Yeah. Maybe Nodame if weâre countinâ hair, but hell if I bloody know. All it gives us is a list of people she MIGHTâVE spoken to, not much tâgo off of in all honesty, but I suppose itâs better than shit-out-of-luck nothinâ.â
â TRIAL âĄAbracadabra | RE: Harumi, and Umeko.
The brunette chuckles a bit as both he and the Mountain Climber seem to speak pretty much in an echo off one another, gray optics stealing a side glance with a tiny huff before returning to those in question. Seiji brings up a fairly good point, and what the Spirit Medium, and the School Representative both have to offer seems fairly bleak in terms of moving the investigation forward anymore. As they both drone on, Warren finds himself flipping back and forth between his Guidebook, filtering through the clues collected, examining the images with great care to look for attention to detail.Â
It takes a moment for it to hit him, quite a bit of a long shot too, but something was better than nothing. Clearing his throat to interject shortly after Umeko finishes speaking, with a muffled âsorryâ at the end if he may have been so rude as to interrupt, he attention is fully directed at Harumi now.
âHarumi right? So, you were making talk about this âshrineâ for the fallen or what have yaâ, I assume given the nature of your uhâŠ.âTalentâ, which is similar to that of what I think Stella mightâve done, hell if I know since I deal more with engines and machines than Faith and Crystal Balls, my guess is you wouldâve set up charms yeah? Perhaps you even brought one with you? I know, I probably sound like Iâm talking out of my arse, but let me explainââ
He wiggles a bit, rocking back and forth in his oxfords before continuing onward with his theory.
âSays that Okada found a small charm found at the Island Shrine. Not only that, but judginâ by appearances of it, it looks a bit worn, which suggests that itâs likely something brought on oneâs person. Nâ I know we havenât spoken personally, but I have seen ya âround before and I know you typically tote a red kimono, and I canât help but notice until just recently, as in fresh before the body fell into our laps, youâve up and changed to white. Plus, sâlike Umeko saidâ your closet primarily contains RED kimono. Nâeven if someone investigated your room, tâbe completely fair in ALL respects, including the others who may as well be bloody guilty, it still wouldnât matter if there wasnât suspicious items, or heavily incriminating evidence in your possession. Most of that was found OUTSIDE the room, that being the knife, as well as the blood in the bath house, the prayer charm, and not to mention yourself and Stella have similar talents which would mean itâs likely Stella felt she could coincide with someone with similar interests. You couldâve gone to pray, add the charm maybe as a little âforgive meâ act before meeting up with Stella and giving her a final parting gift a few times in the back, gone to panic and clean up your shame, and carry on like all is well in the world. I mean, in theory of course, if by some sick twistâa fate I happen to be onto something, makes a person wonder what exactly YOUR secret to hide was.â
â TRIAL âĄAbracadabra |RE: Harumi, Chika, Umeko, and Nisemono.
Heâs quick to side eye Chika, even so far to give her a brief eye roll and a glance to the ceiling. So there was going to be one of those? and by the looks of Nodameâs speech now, tears dripping down her face, the magic number was not one, but two. With a heavy sigh and a roll of his neck, Warren rubs a calloused palm at sore joints, picking out bits and pieces of who was saying anything worth the merit. He himself was trying to patchwork the trial together, because even though his theory was a far stretch, it seemed to become a bit more realistic the more he listened. His gaze went back to the Spirit Medium, watching quietly, listening to all the chatter and picking out important pieces much like how he listens to when he tunes and engine.
Sometimes the underlying issue hides in plain sight, and when he puts Umekoâs evidence find together, and Nisemonoâs testimony, a little part of him seemâs to go back in time for a history listen. He stares at her kimono a little longer, before speaking loud enough to part the jeers and screams of the court room with ease. He was good at demanding attention, a skill of his really.
ââŠNow THAT makes some damn sense!â
âI may be a foreigner, but Iâd be plain stupid not to learn the integrity, and history of a culture I would potentially do business with. I almost couldnât hear that âI donât knowâ, Harumi, but lets be real honest right now, I think we ALL know that you do know why that kimonoâs under there. I know itâs a shit situation love, but itâs one you easily got yourself into on your own prerogative. Nobody can blame you, you certainly arenât the first, likely not the last either, but the only one you can blame for getting caught is yourself. Now before the lot of you brand me at the stake for beinâ a right bastard and wonderinâ why Iâm so confident, let me explain.â
He looks up, brow furrowed as he mumbles to himself trying to gather what he could remember from his teachings that Mordecai taught him.
âYouâre a Priestess yeah? Something of the sort anyways, and earlier you told me that the charm has little significance because anyone religious could âave planted it there, but after the revealing of Umekoâs discovery of the kimono under your bed, it just reinforces it couldnât have been anyone BUT you. I didnât have enough time to run to the laundromat, but at this point I donât think I have to since Iâm most sure you washed your clothes, but only AFTER taking a dip. This is where it gets good.â
He takes a breath, slicks his hair back, and slaps his hands on both sides of the podium now, keeping his gaze, while not malicious, heavy on the Spiritual Medium.
âIs it not true that in uh, whatâs itâ Shinto? Shintoâ thereâs a ritual that operates similar to how Muslimâs preform Wudu before entering a Mosque, where one âwashesâ themselves of impurities? You have to be entirely cleaned head to toe before entering a place of worship, and I believe the same goes for those who practice the same thing you do. You also say that your change of clothes isnât at all definitive evidence, but Iâm gonnae have to call your bluff on that because itâs quite possibly the MOST important piece of evidence in this trial love, not to mention the most incriminating.â
Now it seems his expression goes from smug, to rather serious, and in a way? almost somber.
âOnce I was set to release a line-up of a particular design of sports cars only to be released to the Japanese. They wanted something sleek, minimalist, plain white and boring as hell, but most importantly, they emphasized on the name PURITY for the line up. Now I didnât know why the hell theyâd want to be so ardent on making this their name, until the engineerâs I worked with in Akihabara told me that despite how western folks believe the color âWhiteâ is a symbol for death because of grossly misinterpreted media and shit horror movies, White is a symbol of Purity, Hence the name. Itâs also primarily why you all dress your holy figures, and corpses IN the color white. Youâre absolved of all your impurities when you but on that robe and get down to pray. Iâm not a religious man myself, but I suppose you can confirm my onslaught-mini-japanese-rant yourself, and the whole praying for absolving your sins bit? All on you.â A brief pause before he continues. âThe moment you finished puttinâ six stabs into that poor girlâs back, ya felt so damn guilty ya ran tâ the bath house tâwash the blood away. There wasnât enough found to belong to Stella, so it had to have been runoff from your bloody clothes. Once you were âcleansedâ, you got changed, washed your clothes most likely since crusty blood not only looks awful on fabric, but rather incriminating if I do say so myself, and sat down to pray and get rid of that lingering feel of âimpurityâ. Soââ
He finally lets up on the girl, and exhales a breath, looking at her with a gaze that easily spells tired, but also forlorn. He didnât want to condemn someone to death, but the reality of this situation, this courtroom, was that was how it had to be. He places his hands in his jacket pockets now, keeping his eyes locked on Harumi at all times.
âTry to prove me wrong, honestly, no more âI donât knowâsâ, Kiddo.â
â TRIAL âĄAbracadabra |RE: Harumi
So his entire theory was shit, but he was still right. So, where was the part where he was supposed to be leaping for joy? I mean, he solved a murder! Sortâve, shouldnât this be where he brags and plants his hands firmly on his hips to parade about his victory?
How do you applaud being someoneâs executioner?
â⊠⊠âŠâ
He lets go of a breath he feels heâs been holding onto since the start of this trial. He hears what Harumi has to offer, but most of it goes past and beyond the grease monkey. Itâs difficult for him to say much of anything, and once the culprit has all but finished what she has to say, the girl from earlier who just about ripped his head offâ Chika was it? She practically broke down. Noâ She did break down, and he honestly couldnât blame her. There was no REAL chance for friendship or any sort of bonds as long as they were all here, all trapped, all participating in this shit murder game, and to do so would only mean the deaths caused and committed are much more painful.
God, it reminded him of how much he wanted to go home. He wanted his mother more than anything in the world right about now.
âCoulda, shoulda, woulda kiddo. Stillâ nobody can really blame you. Besides, the lot of us? at the rate weâre going? weâll probably be back here within the weeks end, I guarantee it.â
That wasnât some melodramatic off-hand comment either, it was pretty much fact.Â
âBollocks.â
âWhaâdo ah get if I win?â âImplyinâ youâre even gonna win.â âPiss off.â

Monobear, my glasses are all messed up. Could ya tell me if there's a moderate amount of blood 'ere in the lobby, no trails, just a a few flecks here and there, or is there more than I think I'm seeing.
âYou know this island doesnât have an optometrist, so there wonât be a way for you to update your prescription if you actually need it. From what I understand, the blood really isnât subtantial, but it definitely says that someone was here earlier.â
âMaybe washing off any evidence they might have on their person?â
â CH. 2 ⥠Warren Investigation III.
The cafe seemed to have been a bust, and there werenât any other places that the boy could think of that the girl, or the culprit, may have gone. It couldâve been that she knew the person right? course, she never saw it comingâ all stabs right to the spine, like a damn coward. Quite the mess too honestly.
Wait, mess? Well. It was worth a shot. With a hop and a skip, the brunetteâs off to a few couple places in mind, starting with the Bathhouseâs. First was the girlâs side, ignoring the obvious tinge of discomfort in his gut from being in a place he shouldnât be for the sake of the investigation, he scans the changing area tenaciously before deciding to step out into the bathing area for a quick sweep. Ducking out once the area was surveyed enough, he moves out and across to the waiting area, moving now into the menâs changing area to do a sweep there, before doing the same procedure of checking and scanning the bathing area for evidence.Â
