How about high school au? Where lulu and friends get bullied, but big kids like Vi wont stand for it.
They’re laughing at her again.
Lulu pretends not to notice. She’s rather good at it - pretending. She pretends a lot of things, like…being cheerful all the time…or having friends.
Like Pix. Pix is her stuffed squirrel. His head often sticks out of her backpack when in class, but outside of it, he’s never far from her arms. He’s like a shield, between her and her tormentors.
Oh, and they’re vicious today.
It’s probably the stuffed toy that attracts them, but Lulu wouldn’t give up Pix for anything. After all, he’s her only real friend. Other people think she’s too…well, weird. After all, her parents are into all this New Age stuff, and with her outfit and upbringing, she really stands out.
And, even though she is proud of her roots, Lulu wishes that for once others would be too.
So when she hears a loud, brash voice, the young teenager shuts her eyes tightly, waiting for the pushing and shoving and laughter to start.
Wait. That didn’t sound like what she expected.
Lulu opens her eyes to an astonishing sight. A tall, burly teenager is standing between her and her tormentors. Even as the short girl watches in confusion, the bullies flee - and before she can say anything, the older and taller girl turns to her. “Hi. I’m Vi,” she says simply, thrusting out a hand.
Pix thinks that this Vi isn’t so bad, plus- “Your hair,” she squeaks.
“But isn’t it against the ru-”
“Yep, but they gotta make me wash it out first.”
Vi blinks as the small student takes her hand in a quick shake. “…P-”
“This is Pix,” the girl says, hefting the squirrel in her arms. “And I’m Lulu!”
“I know.” When Lulu tilts her head, Vi adds, “I’ve noticed you around…especially those people.” Her lips twist unpleasantly. “I don’t like bullies.”
Lulu reverts back to her downward gaze, resuming the position that she’d adopted while the bullies had been having a go at her. Vi only harrumphed under her breath. “Look, I know you’re small, and people think you’re…weird, but…If you need somewhere to go, then there’s always a spare seat at our table.”
Lulu looks up, surprised, following the pinkette’s arm. Sure enough, a small group of students are gathered around a table. One girl is watching them with a clearly worried-mother expression. Another seems to be trying to have an animated conversation with a third, who is miraculously ignoring him while perusing the contents of what looks like the textbook for the advanced physics class.
And Pix likes Vi already, so- “I’d love to sit with you,” she said, letting her shyness through her ordinary happy mask.
Maybe she wouldn’t have to pretend around them.
