(( divergent au for the Family Connections verse with @envy-the-freak ))
For the past several weeks, Greed had been deliberately antagonizing Pride. Seeing how far his older brother could be pushed before Father stepped in. He knew that, Envy aside, the other homunculi took a dim view on Greed’s presence. Even Father seemed like he was only barely tolerating him, most of the time. Honestly, Greed used to wonder about his own usefulness in the past -- he was shit at stealth, shit at tracking, not the best fighter, horrible at espionage, wasn’t particularly strong or fast... His best asset was his shield, and that was only good at covering himself.
He was, basically, trying to make himself seem even more expendable now than he had been before.
Finally, he cornered Pride when Father was nowhere nearby to stop either of them and break up the fight. He didn’t pay attention to what was said, except in as much as he needed to in order to get Pride angry enough to attack. Sure, Pride could act all haughty and superior, claim he was ‘devoid’ of such anger, but Greed knew that his older brother was weak in one area that he wasn’t.
Predictably, Pride’s shadows had Greed pinned to the ground. There was a lot of attention being drawn to them, now. The other homunculi were watching. Greed carefully avoided looking at Envy, knowing that he wouldn’t be able to meet their eyes and see the pain on their face and still be able to make it through this. He was doing all this shit for them, not for himself.
That was the key difference between Greed and Pride, right here and now. “You should have learned to stay in your place, Greed.” Pride was so cocky, so arrogant, he really believed that he was ‘above’ Greed.
As the shadows closed in on him, Greed felt his consciousness shifting. Being... absorbed. An attempt to be assimilated. Pride was so convinced that he’d won that he wasn’t expecting a battle of willpower. And oh, if there was one thing Greed was good at, it was being a stubborn bastard that just. Wouldn’t. Quit.
Not only that, but Pride, like Envy, was suddenly exposed to a whole side of Greed that had been overlooked in the past -- his intense self-loathing. A strong enough counter to Pride’s hubris that Greed’s avarice was able to win out.
In the physical world, Pride’s child body dissolved into the shadows. Those same shadows swirled and churned, before slowly forming a very different body. A familiar one, with the Ouroboros tattoo sitting proudly on his left hand. He started laughing, the sound almost manic, before turning his violet eyes towards the other homunculi. “Nobody hurts what’s mine and gets away with it!” A warning. And also, for Envy, a promise.
Greed had taken down Pride for what he’d done to Envy. Father was next.
