Yo Zutarians/Anti-LOK People/Comic Book Haters!

I heard that y’all are getting exhausted from the act of reaching so much, so I decided to change my approach and help you guys out. I’ve put together a revolutionary workout program crafted to strengthen the muscle groups used in stretching the truth and reaching really far to validate yourselves!

(Pro tip: make sure you warm up first with some cardio or light Bryke insults)

1. Lateral Dumbbell Raises (3 sets of 10 reps)

This exercise will strengthen your shoulder muscles, specifically the ones used in reaching up and to the side. This will benefit you in situations where you have to stretch your resources into a side interview that another Zutara blogger made up when trying to bad-mouth Kataang.

2. Calf Raises (5 sets of 20 reps)

If you ever find yourself having to reach REALLY high or far to validate your hatred for the comics, make sure to really emphasize this activity. Your calves are often forgotten as the most important part of stretching upwards, so reaching for those uneducated interpretations of Azula’s character arc is much, much easier after doing this exercise.

3. High Rows (3 sets of 10 reps)

These rows work on the upper back, which will allow you to extend your arms outward to the most confusing interpretations of The Legend of Korra, allowing you to validate your flawed opinion on it with ease. This exercise will also aid in pulling things closer to you, such as your Zuko body pillow, or your fanfiction when you cry yourself to sleep at night.

4. Treadmill (20 minutes)

We finish off our fitness adventure with some nice cardio. Try to keep a steady, fast jogging pace, as running away from the truth and people who are smarter than you is often difficult. Make sure you train properly for these moments by pushing yourself each time you exercise, just as you push your shitty opinions on other people.

And that’s it! In just 4 simple exercises, you can become better at being the worst person in the fandom! Don’t forget to cool down afterward with some foam-rolling or reading a “fix-it” fanfiction. Let’s get in shape and spread the hate!!!

Why do Zutara stans reach so far to put down Kataang and Maiko, but don’t ever seem to mention the truly toxic/abusive relationships that Bryke have spewed out, like Bolin x Eska, Bolin x Ginger, and even Mako x Korra?

To be fair, Bolin x Eska was meant to be toxic and Mako x Korra didn’t work out because of their toxicity. It’s the idea of “bad relationships portrayed well” vs “good relationships portrayed poorly”, which I definitely think it’s the former. To each his/her own.

The only one I can kind of give a pass is Mako and Korra, just because they admitted to each other they wouldn’t work out because they butted heads so often. However, that doesn’t change how destructive the love triangle in season one was, and how unapologetic those two came off as. They never seemed genuinly sorry for what they did.

From The Spirit of Competition:

Korra: Bolin, I’m sorry I hurt your feelings. I didn’t mean to let things get so out of hand.

From Skeletons in The Closet:

Mako: Asami, I’m sorry things got so messed up between us, but whatever happens today, I want you to know how much I care about you.

Rather than admitting what they did was wrong, they spin it around; Korra is sorry that his feelings got hurt, and Mako is “sorry things got so messed up between us” which sort of implies that both of them had a hand in the way their relationship derailed. Mako and Korra never apologize for going Asami and Bolin’s backs’ whilst dating/leading them on, they just feel bad because of the aftermath. 

Bolin and Eska was a complete trainwreck. Bolin’s torment was played off as a joke. He was straight up terrified of Eska, and no one did more than give Bolin advice that only ever went as far as “you have to break up with her”. 

After escaping Eska’s clutches, Bolin pursues Ginger, who really doesn’t owe anything to him. She’s an actress, she’s doing her job, she’s not obligated to pay him any attention off set. For the most part, she’s simply indifferent towards Bolin.

She only ever addresses him with contempt only after he takes advantage of her situation and forces a kiss on her. It wasn’t a fleeting kiss during a moment where they were both confused and hurt, where he immediately backed off when she pulled away, where he immediately berated himself with “I’m such an idiot”. She was tied down on set, he leaned down to kiss her, and he continued while she struggled underneath him.

It was unnerving. It was only made worse when he had the gall to go and hit on Ginger. 

From The Sting:

Bolin: So … that kiss. I liked it. And it seemed like you liked it too.

Ginger: Uch. You’re confusing Ginger the actress with Ginger the character.

Bolin: Okay, okay, I’m sorry. I’m totally getting, like, a weird vibe from you right now. It’s like, a minute ago, when we were shooting, you were into me, but now you’re not.

Ginger: That’s because Ginger loves Nuktuk, not Bolin. [Walks off in annoyance.]

Bolin: But Nuktuk is Bolin. I’m a hero. [Sighs.]

Is Bolin really that dense? He’s not five years old, he’s sixteen. 

What really irritates me about Ginger and Bolin’s relationship is that Ginger becomes interested in Bolin when he saves the President, and is noted as a hero. Not only is Ginger portrayed as a fame seeking, shallow person, but Bolin is then “rewarded” with her, rather than having been truly punished, or at least having learned what he did was unnacceptable. Even if their relationship was supposed to be comedic or some … kind of commentary (?), it didn’t succeed at either the former or latter. It just came off as shallow. 

So, Bolin and the rest of the Krew join Korra in the season 2 finale. Eska captures Bolin and Mako. Then, Bolin breaks down and confesses his love to Eska.

From Darkness Falls:

Eska: No. Don’t listen to him. His words are poisoning your mind. [Bolin weeps bitterly.] What’s with this outburst of emotion? Bolin: [Weeping.] I’m sorry, I can’t help it. It’s just so sad that I’ll never be with you again. Eska: What? Explain yourself further. Bolin: Eska, I’ve always loved you. And I always wanted to be with you. But now that the world is ending, [Weeps.] I’m never gonna get that chance. Eska: [Angrily.] We could have been together, but you left me at the altar. Bolin: No, I was scared. I was scared of my true feelings for you. Gah, I should have never left you. I’m sorry. And I’m sorry that we’ll never have the chance to rekindle the dying ember that was our love into a big fire of love flames. As Bolin continues weeping, Mako looks on with unsure looks. Eska looks at Bolin with confusion before kissing him. The ice around the brothers melt. Eska stops kissing Bolin.

The viewer is left believing that Bolin confessed his love to Eska to free Mako and himself. Mako even comments on his performance,

Mako: Wow! That was the best acting I’ve ever seen. You completely fooled her. Bolin: [Unsure.] Yeah right, huh. That was acting. [Wipes a tear.]

… and then we find out he was completely serious. Now this could have been … believable as an attempt of a portrayal of an abusive relationship. Maybe they wanted to show how abuse victims can often blame themselves for the problems in a relationship and come crawling back to their partner. It was sloppy, insincere, and often made Bolin, the victim, the subject of abuse for the sake of comedy. But, we ended up getting this instead (which I can’t figure out if it’s better or worse):

From Light in The Dark:

Bolin: So, I was thinking. I’m not really a fan of a long-distance relationship thing, [Korra walks off.] so how about you move to Republic City with me. Eska: I do not think it will be possible. Bolin: [Somewhat disappointed.] Okay. Desna can come too. Eska: I will not be joining you, Bolin. Desna and I must return home. Bolin: But you said- Eska: Eternal darkness was upon us. I became caught up in the moment. Bolin: [Sadly.] Yeah. I guess I did too. Eska: [Walking toward Bolin.] But, you will always hold the special place in the organ that pumps my blood. I will remember you fondly. [Places her right hand to her heart, while smiling.] My turtle duck.

They share this “cute” moment, and break up on good terms, because of Eska’s protests. That’s insulting. Eska and Bolin isn’t a good portrayal of a bad relationship, it’s a bad portrayal of a bad relationship trying to be a quirky relationship.

Honxrable has an unhealthy obsession in whatever Mai does and what every fiction character does except for her ship. I don't ship Aang x Katara, but I prefer Zuko x Mai, I actually like that Zuko didn't end up with some generic nice girl (like Katara)

Yeah, I’ve noticed. I also totally agree with your thoughts on Mai and Zuko. I think they’re a good match despite their complicated relationship.

She is very bland and loves being nice to people.

[To Aang] Will you please shut your air hole? Believe it or not your infinite wisdom gets a little old sometimes! Why don't we just throw the scroll away since you're so naturally gifted!

[Mockingly.] The stars sure are beautiful tonight. Too bad you can't see them, Toph!

Yes, a very generic and nice girl with no flaws. If anything, Mai is more subdued and “generic” than Katara

Gene Yang: I’m writing ATLA comics.

Me: You messed up a perfectly good series is what you did, look at the artificial plots, disjointed character arcs, bad dialogue, shallow new characters, change and shortcut into major elements such as taking away Aang’s control of the Avatar State, creating a new Ursa, never giving Sokka a serious moment, making Zuko perpetually out of control, leaving Azula on the cutting room floor, terrible progress on Maiko.

Story has a beginning and an ending, but there’s no change or escalation in between these books.

-“Artificial plots” What? They had to do something in order for there to be more story. How is dealing with the aftermath of the war and people’s conflicting views on what to do with the world “artificial”?

-“Bad dialogue” So the characters acting and talking essentially the exact same as they do in the show is bad dialogue. Hmm, I see.  -“Shallow new characters” I bet you’re one of the people that complains about the already-established characters not having enough time either, huh? Would you rather there be no new characters? The stories are still about the Gaang.

-“Shortcut into major elements” Nice buzzwords ya got there. If only they made sense, like, AT ALL.

-“Taking away control of Aang’s avatar state” No wonder your name is “incorrectatla” considering you seem to not get anything correct about the original show. Aang lost control of his avatar state in Book 2. Might wanna check that out. It’s kind of an important episode.

-“Creating a new Ursa” There’s a new Ursa? Where? When did they start making clones? I know Ursa had her identity thing in The Search but I didn’t realize I missed a comic where she clones herself! -”Never giving Sokka a serious moment” While I will admit that Sokka is certainly less serious in the comics, to say he never had any moments of seriousness is shallow and shows your complete lack of understanding I’ve come to expect at this point. -”Making Zuko perpetually more out of control” Yes, because we didn’t have 2 entire trilogies dedicated to him improving as a leader. Did you pass elementary school reading class? -”Leaving Azula on the cutting room floor” Yes, because her growth out of psychological torture and plans (albeit somewhat sinister) to help her brother definitely wasn’t showing any progress on her character at all, right? Also, isn’t Azula a side character? I thought you already said the new characters don’t get enough time? Which one should have more time, then? -”Terrible progress on Maiko” I’m assuming you haven’t read any of Smoke and Shadow now. -”Story has a beginning and an ending” Holy shit, you got something correct! Congratulations!!! Seriously though, this might be the most hilariously awful criticism of the comics I’ve ever seen. It’s clear you lack any form of reading ability and basic inference skills. See, I hold some form of “reading ability”, I can show you with my knowledge of miscellaneous literary devices! As follows: ad hominem (something you seem to use a lot!), hyperbole, aphorism, allegory, allusion, simile, metaphor, alliteration, personification, chiasmus, etc. As you can tell, I definitely passed elementary school. Anyway, back to what I wanted to say. I’m not going to argue with you about any of your points, except for one. “Aang lost his control of the Avatar State in Book 2. Might want to check that out. It’s kind of an important episode.” You know what else was an important episode? Sozin’s Comet, Part 4: Avatar Aang. Using my “inference skills”, I can tell that Aang finally gained full control of the Avatar State. Right before he can kill Ozai, Aang is able to pull himself out of the Avatar State. His willpower is so strong that he is able to resist the overwhelming power of every past Avatar pressuring him to kill Ozai. Then, after taking Ozai’s bending away, Aang is able to channel and control the Avatar State to flood the lands before him, and then drain them again to put out the fires that had been set. It makes no sense that Aang doesn’t have control of the Avatar State in the ATLA comics. It completely ignores Aang’s development, all for unnecessary conflict. It’s shallow and transparent. It’s just another example thing the ATLA comics gets wrong.

Remember that part where Aang only went into the Avatar State in the finale because it was an involuntary defense mechanism? Remember when that’s exactly how it worked in the flashback in LOK?

If anything is at fault, it’s ATLA for using the avatar state as a random cop-out after establishing Aang lost his ability to use it. The comics weren’t the thing that made it confusing, this inciting the basis of this argument in the first place.

So no, the comics did not do that, nor 99.9999% of the things most people say that they do “wrong.”
