Sukuna’s 2 Paths: My Character Anyasis of Sukuna and his Backstory
This will contain minor spoilers for the Sukuna Backstory comic I am working on, I’ve flagged them just in case. Also, you should check out my explanation on why I think Sukuna was raised by monks first!
This is kinda long so if you don’t wanna read all that, just read the parts in bold, you’ll get the gist of it.
I believe Sukuna is an extremely nuanced character that can be interpreted a number of different ways, and this is my interpretation of him. I’ve had some people be genuinely mad at me that I gave Sukuna a loving figure in his life and that he’s not pure evil from birth. I understand that is how some people see Sukuna, which is completely valid, but I also wanted to make my own analysis that will explain why I made these choices and how they still align with Gege’s writing of Sukuna. This analysis will also inform how I’ll be characterizing Sukuna in the rest of my backstory comic! I also want to preface that Sukuna having a “tragic” backstory does NOT absolve him of his actions, he is 100% pure evil in JJK and aware of the own cruelty of what he does.
Was Sukuna Always Evil?
The Sukuna we see in JJK is pure evil, there is no denying that. However, I am of the personal opinion that he wasn’t just born like this but was instead made this way.
His conversation with Mahito at the end of JJK I believe supports this best. Here it’s revealed that Sukuna never truly followed his own ideals of being “detached” from humanity’s afflictions and the pursuit of only pure strength, instead his underlying motivation has always been seeking revenge against a society that shunned and persecuted him. Sukuna was never above human desire, he was always motivated by his own desire to retaliate against those who had treated him with cruelty. Now to me, that doesn’t sound like the underlying motivations of someone who is evil by nature, instead, evil is Sukuna’s response to his circumstance. His own reply to Mahito is “what’s the difference? I lived in the only manner I knew,” because to him cruelty is what he was taught and what he began responding in turn with.
Sukuna then explains why he went down the path he did, and it is because he “feared his own curse would immolate me.” This could mean a number of different things, he could have feared the way others persecuted him and those around him for his appearance or he could have feared his own capacity for destruction. Either way, this shows that Sukuna was motivated by a desire for revenge and motivated by his fear above all else. Cruelty probably became a necessity for Sukuna as the only way to survive his “curse” and once he embraced that cruelty, he “couldn’t help but spit out the curses stirring in his viscera.” His purist of strength was also probably came out of necessity, because if he was strong enough, he would no longer need to fear.
Toranosuke and Sukuna
I believe Toranosuke, the tiger that appears in Modulo, is meant to be Sukuna. Considering how much Gege associates both Sukuna and Yuji with tigers (Itadori literally has the kanji for tiger in it), I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he picked a tiger out of all animals to appear in Modulo. Also interesting that the tiger lives in the Gifu providence, which is where Mt Hida is, the mountain that Sukuna’s corpse was inside. The mythological Sukuna was also from the Hida providence (which is where Gifu is now).
Here’s a summary from the JJK wiki about Toranosuke for those who haven’t read Modulo:
“[A] man Osada, a former jujutsu sorcerer [is] hunting the true culprit behind the recent killings: a tiger named Toranosuke. When Tsurugi expresses disbelief that a tiger could even exist in Japan, Osada explains that Toranosuke's grandparents were smuggled into the country by illegal foreign traders over twenty-five years ago and eventually made their home in the mountains of Gifu. However, the recent restoration of a massive solar power plant atop the mountain caused the river to dry up from the heat, forcing Toranosuke to descend in search of water and prey, leading to the attacks on villagers...
Osada reveals his intention to save Toranosuke rather than kill him, planning to contain the tiger in his home far from town. Tsurugi objects to the idea, insisting that any beast that has eaten humans must be exterminated…
After Tsurugi kills Toranosuke… a tiger cub emerges from the bushes. Instead of attacking the cub, Tsurugi gently hands it over to Osada, asking him to raise it well and ensure it doesn't become another Toranosuke. Tearfully, Osada promises he will.”
The parallels in this one page to Sukuna are crazy. I have no idea if Gege ever intends on giving us a straight Sukuna backstory but I feel like this is pretty close. Both Toranosuke and Sukuna began life innocent, but because of human circumstances, they were forced to become “man-eaters” for survival, changing them completely.
*Minor spoilers here* My backstory for Sukuna will be based on Toranosuke. The Old Monk that raises Sukuna is Osada, a lonely soul who finds another lonely soul to take care of. However, similar to Osada, the Old Monk will be unable to help Sukuna and by the end of the story Sukuna will become entirely unrecognizable to him. Also like Toranosuke, Sukuna will be forced down from his mountain (the mountain shrine he lives at) then be forced to fight for survival down below. I hope that makes sense lol *End of spoilers*
I also believe the new tiger cub that Osada gets after Toranosuke represents Yuji. Yuji and Sukuna are foils to each other, at their core they are same person, but circumstance changed who they eventually became. It’s the same as how Toranosuke was once the same as the tiger cub, but because of their different circumstances, they will most likely end up very different.
Sukuna’s Two Paths
I’ve seen a lot of people say that Sukuna had absolutely no one in his life but Uraume. I agree, but I only think that is true for the Sukuna we see in JJK, which is after his whole human life and 1000 years as a cursed object. I believe earlier in life, Sukuna had at least one other person who thought he could be good and tried to teach him such.
I believe this because of this page right here. The woman on the left 100% isn’t Yorozu. If Gege had intended her to be Yorozu she would have actually resembled her, as other than having black hair, they have nothing else in common. She is also dressed as a shrine maiden, and I love Yorozu but she is the farthest thing from a shrine maiden LMAFO.
In this panel Sukuna talks about how a life driven by fear and revenge wasn’t his only option, he did in fact have another path open to him. Uraume represents the path we see him take in life, the path of a curse and a monster. As while I do believe Sukuna cared for Uraume, Uraume simply walked along with Sukuna down the path he was already on. Uraume never challenged Sukuna’s perspective, held all the same beliefs and is complicit with him in his actions.
The shrine maiden then represents the other path he could’ve taken in life. She was probably his teacher, someone who tried to show him the path of good, but instead he chose to give into his fears and desires and go down the other way.
Sukuna is more than aware that his actions are wrong, cruel and selfish. Despite the cruelty he faced, he must have had at least one person that tried to teach him wrong from right, tried to show him love, so that he could reject it later.
I also think that it is important Sukuna did have the option to be good at some point in his life, but he chose otherwise. If his life was nothing but rejection and cruelty, if he had no option but to become a monster, then that deprives him of the agency of choosing to be evil. He chose to be evil, he chose to embrace his curse and become a monster. His “tragic backstory” shouldn’t absolve him from his sins, because he ultimately chooses to go down the path of a curse despite having another option. This is why Yuji pisses him off so much, because despite everything Yuji has endured (even the stuff Sukuna put him through personally), he stays on the path of good, something Sukuna failed at. Someone he considers weaker than him and beneath him can do something he couldn’t, and that infuriates him more than anything else. Yuji recognizes this too, and that’s why the only time we ever see Sukuna truly angry is when he realizes Yuji is pitying him.
Imagine you’ve tried to be good, but the world is horrible and cruel so you just give up and decide being evil is wayyy easier but then this STUPID BRAT comes along and cages you and then shows you you’re actually the weak one for not being able to stand by your ideals and giving up. AND THEN he’s the one who looks down on you and pities you!!! Shiiii I’d be pissed asf too!!!
I find it so interesting that the only name Sukuna refers to himself as is “the fallen.” It implies he had to come down from somewhere ya know? The backstory I am writing will not try to make Sukuna a sympathetic character, you are NOT ment to forgive him for all the horrible things he’s done just because he has a sad backstory. If anything he is supposed to be a tragic character, where the tragedy lies in the fact that he’s let the cruelty he’s experienced become his own.
Thank you for anyone who read all of that!!! It’s a long ramble but I really wanted to make sense of Sukuna’s character. If you have any questions or anything I can elaborate on, let me know!

Furtive Chase
Leon was tired. Beyond tired, actually. Tired didn't even begin to describe the feeling deep in his bones. The Entity was mad at him for one reason or another. He was thrown into several trials one after another with barely a moment's rest between them to recuperate. In the past dozen trials or so he'd made it out of maybe three of them? The killers seemed to be getting harsher. Hell, he'd even been tunnelled out of the last trial. He didn't stick around to see if anyone else had gotten out.
Currently, Leon was sitting on one hook in the basement. The back hook, actually. What he'd done to deserve this? Well, he had looped The Ghostface for two entire gens after the silent stalker had marked him. Safe to say the killer was not happy. He winced a bit as a scream rang through the trial grounds. They'd gotten unlucky with the map, The Decimated Borgo was in a constant state of midnight, with the moon covering the sun. Plenty of darkness to hide the silent killer. Leon had lost track of time since he'd been on the hook, his mind wandering to a different time. A better time. Before the zombie outbreak in Raccoon City. Before the Entity had taken him and his friends. When he was just a normal guy, fresh out of the academy. Things were so much simpler back then. Unfortunately, he didn't have much time to dwell on it as he came back to reality. Dwight was pulling him off the hook.
“Come on, we can't stay here. I haven't seen Ghostface since Sable was hooked,” Dwight whispered. Leon could only nod as the pair crept up the stairs.
In the time it took for Dwight to stitch up his wounds, Ace had traded hooks with Sable. Hook trading was a sure fire way for things to snowball more than they already had. Leon and Dwight split, deciding working on two different generators was a better idea than one. By the looks of it, Sable had healed herself in the basement without being caught. Good. Once Leon had pulled enough useless parts out of the generator, he quietly slipped into a locker, and made a quick little flashbang.
With that in hand, he ran up to where Ace was hooked, looking around for the silent stalker as he unhooked him. He led Ace away and into a dilapidated building to heal him before telling the gambler where his generator was. He could tell that Sable was in chase with the killer. He couldn't tell how he knew. There were just certain things the survivors knew. Such as when another survivor was working on gens, getting chased, healing, cleansing totems, etc. Just knowledge that the Entity had given them during trials.
Using a perk Dwight had taught him, Leon crept around, waiting until the yellow aura of Sable was visible, standing out against the blue and black hue of this realm. He could tell she was injured, having been sliced by The Ghostface’s signature blade. He stayed out of sight but nearby as Sable was giving The Ghostface a run for his money.
Speaking too soon, Sable went down not long after those thoughts crossed Leon's mind. Breaking into a sprint, Leon ran towards the pair, and as The Ghostface bent down to pick the poor girl up. Fingers at the ready he pulled the pin of the flashbang, dropping it at the killer’s feet. Unfortunately though, the momentum from a perk he learned from Renato, Background Player, was a little too good. He bumped right into The Ghostface and Sable, the flashbang blinding all three of them as Leon stumbled to the ground, landing on top of someone. That someone wouldn't remain a mystery for too long as the momentum from the fall made his face smack straight into the rigid plastic of The Ghostface’s mask, cracking it and making his nose and lips hurt.
Leon sat up, disoriented and sore. He rubbed his sore nose, his hand coming back smeared with blood, damnit. He looked down at the person under him. Oh fuck. Oh fuck. The Ghostface groaned underneath him, his mask cracked and practically falling off his face. Shit. He not only knocked the killer over, but also broke his fucking mask. Leon looked around, relieved Sable had gotten away, hopefully to Dwight or Ace to get bandaged up. He wasn't left to his thoughts for long as he was abruptly pushed off Ghostface.
“You brat!” He shouted, clutching the now broken mask, in his hands, “That was my favourite mask!” The killer’s eyes met Leon's.
Leon wasn't exactly surprised that The Ghostface was just a guy. He knew that most of the killers were just people, or used to be regular people before their inciting incidents. Honestly, he expected The Ghostface to be…Ugly? Was that mean? To be fair, he expected any of the killers who hid their face behind a mask to be ugly. But The Ghostface was just…Average. More on the attractive side, he had a slightly crooked nose, likely from a fight. From a victim maybe? Leon found himself wondering. His hair was dark and his eyes were darker. They were basically black, like a starless night. An endless void you could get lost in…
Unfortunately, Leon couldn't get lost in them for long as The Ghostface lunged at him “I'll kill you kennedy!” He yelled, almost screamed, at Leon.
Shit. Leon jumped out of the way, narrowly avoiding his lunge, “It wasn't on purpose, man!” and the chase was on. The rest of the trial was a blur. Apparently while he and The Ghostface were on the ground, another generator got finished, leaving two generators left. The Ghostface was solely focused on him now. He didn't seem to notice any of the other survivors that tried to run intervention, attempting to get The Ghostface’s attention. Leon had pissed him off badly. So, the others decided to focus on the last two generators, getting them done as quickly as possible while Leon did his best to avoid certain death.
Luckily, academy training came in handy, his lungs weren't as bad as some of the other survivor’s. He had heard poor Dwight's wheezing after being in chase. He regretted using so many pallets, but he didn't really have a choice, as he smacked shack pallet down onto The Ghostface’s, now exposed, face. The final generator was finished, and the sirens blared throughout the map, letting the survivors know the exit gates could be opened now. Shit. The generator was finished on the other side of the map. No doubt the furthest gate is the one they'll be opening. Would he be able to make it there?
He didn't have time to think as The Ghostface broke the pallet with his boot, resuming his hot pursuit of the rookie cop. Shit. Leon vaulted the window, nearly bumping into Ace and Dwight.
“Hey, we came to take hits!” Dwight smiled at Leon. They couldn't stand around for much longer as The Ghostface vaulted the shack window. Shit. All three men broke off into a sprint, Leon at the head of the pack.
“Sable has the door ninety-nined!” Ace called out behind him, just barely missing a swing from The Ghostface’s knife.
“She knows that when we get close to open the door and take any hits as we- OW!” Dwight cried out as The Ghostface’s knife sliced the poor leader’s back, the hit boosting him up ahead of Leon a little. Shit. That's one hit down. It felt like forever and only a moment before they came up to the towering gate, Sable pulled the lever down, the giant gate lifting as she sprinted to run behind Leon. The Ghostface’s bloodlust seemed never-ending. Ace had taken a hit already and was running alongside Dwight. As they got to the drawbridge Sable was hit…And instantly downed. Shit. He had No One Escapes Death. Sable screamed as she hit the ground. They couldn't look back. Not now. The Ghostface paid no mind to the white haired woman on the ground, his inky black eyes still focused on Leon, and still filled with rage. He swung a second too late, hitting the spikes the Entity put up to protect the survivors as they exited the trial. Leon, Ace, and Dwight all got out. They watched as Sable was picked up, and carried to the nearest hook. The killer even took out his frustrations on her by slashing her with his knife as she was sacrificed to the Entity.
Back at the campfire, Leon couldn't get the last trial out of his mind. He'd never seen a killer unmasked. He didn't even know they could break their masks. Who else's mask could be removed? The Legion? What would The Knight look like without his mask? Despite all the questions running through Leon's mind his thoughts kept returning to The Ghostface. Those dark eyes, black as ink, as the night, that crooked nose, sharp jawline. The brown hair, messy from the mask, and probably sweat. He couldn't help but wonder. What did killers do in between trials?

Tips for Writing Injuries
✧ Broken ribs suck. You don’t just “walk it off.” Breathing hurts. Laughing hurts. Existing hurts. Characters with rib injuries won’t be doing heroic sprints.
✧ Concussions aren’t instant naps. Dazed vision, nausea, dizziness, maybe even personality changes, but they’re not going to collapse neatly like in the movies.
✧ Blood loss is sneaky. It’s not just about dramatic pools of blood. It’s dizziness, confusion, and the body getting cold as circulation tanks.
✧ Adrenaline lies. Someone can take a serious injury and not feel it until the fight’s over. That “I didn’t realize I was bleeding until later” trope? Very real.
✧ Twisted ankles are brutal. One bad step and suddenly running is off the table. Even walking hurts like hell. Perfect way to ground a chase scene.
✧ Burns linger. Even small burns hurt more than most people expect. Blisters, infection risk, constant pain, it’s not just a cool scar later.
✧ Dislocated shoulders = useless arm. Characters can’t keep swinging a sword or firing a gun. They’re basically fighting one-armed until it’s fixed.
✧ Shock is a thing. Pale skin, trembling, rapid heartbeat, and eventually disorientation. A character might not even realize how bad their wound is.
✧ Stitches aren’t magic. Getting sewn up is painful and recovery takes time. They’re not instantly battle-ready after a needle and thread.
✧ Scars tell stories. Some fade, some don’t. Some stay sensitive forever. Don’t forget the aftermath when the wound becomes part of the character.

Zoom In, Don’t Glaze Over: How to Describe Appearance Without Losing the Plot
You’ve met her before. The girl with “flowing ebony hair,” “emerald eyes,” and “lips like rose petals.” Or him, with “chiseled jawlines,” “stormy gray eyes,” and “shoulders like a Greek statue.”
We don’t know them.
We’ve just met their tropes.
Describing physical appearance is one of the trickiest — and most overdone — parts of character writing. It’s tempting to reach for shorthand: hair color, eye color, maybe a quick body scan. But if we want a reader to see someone — to feel the charge in the air when they enter a room — we need to stop writing mannequins and start writing people.
So let’s get granular. Here’s how to write physical appearance in a way that’s textured, meaningful, and deeply character-driven.
1. Hair: It’s About Story, Texture, and Care
Hair says a lot — not just about genetics, but about choices. Does your character tame it? Let it run wild? Is it dyed, greying, braided, buzzed, or piled on top of her head in a hurry?
Good hair description considers:
Texture (fine, coiled, wiry, limp, soft)
Context (windblown, sweat-damp, scorched by bleach)
Emotion (does she twist it when nervous? Is he ashamed of losing it?)
Flat: “Her long brown hair framed her face.”
Better: “Her ponytail was too tight, the kind that whispered of control issues and caffeine-fueled 4 a.m. library shifts.”
You don’t need to romanticise it. You need to make it feel real.
2. Eyes: Less Color, More Connection
We get it: her eyes are violet. Cool. But that doesn’t tell us much.
Instead of focusing solely on eye color, think about:
What the eyes do (do they dart, linger, harden?)
What others feel under them (seen, judged, safe?)
The surrounding features (dark circles, crow’s feet, smudged mascara)
Flat: “His piercing blue eyes locked on hers.”
Better: “His gaze was the kind that looked through you — like it had already weighed your worth and moved on.”
You’re not describing a passport photo. You’re describing what it feels like to be seen by them.
3. Facial Features: Use Contrast and Texture
Faces are not symmetrical ovals with random features. They’re full of tension, softness, age, emotion, and life.
Things to look for:
Asymmetry and character (a crooked nose, a scar)
Expression patterns (smiling without the eyes, habitual frowns)
Evidence of lifestyle (laugh lines, sun spots, stress acne)
Flat: “She had a delicate face.”
Better: “There was something unfinished about her face — as if her cheekbones hadn’t quite agreed on where to settle, and her mouth always seemed on the verge of disagreement.”
Let the face be a map of experience.
4. Bodies: Movement > Measurement
Forget dress sizes and six packs. Think about how bodies occupy space. How do they move? What are they hiding or showing? How do they wear their clothes — or how do the clothes wear them?
Ask:
What do others notice first? (a presence, a posture, a sound?)
How does their body express emotion? (do they go rigid, fold inwards, puff up?)
Flat: “He was tall and muscular.”
Better: “He had the kind of height that made ceilings nervous — but he moved like he was trying not to take up too much space.”
Describing someone’s body isn’t about cataloguing. It’s about showing how they exist in the world.
5. Let Emotion Tint the Lens
Who’s doing the describing? A lover? An enemy? A tired narrator? The emotional lens will shape what’s noticed and how it’s described.
In love: The chipped tooth becomes charming.
In rivalry: The smirk becomes smug.
In mourning: The face becomes blurred with memory.
Same person. Different lens. Different description.
6. Specificity is Your Superpower
Generic description = generic character. One well-chosen detail creates intimacy. Let us feel the scratch of their scarf, the clink of her earrings, the smudge of ink on their fingertips.
Examples:
“He had a habit of adjusting his collar when he lied — always clockwise, always twice.”
“Her nail polish was always chipped, but never accidentally.”
Make the reader feel like they’re the only one close enough to notice.
Describing appearance isn’t just about what your character looks like. It’s about what their appearance says — about how they move through the world, how others see them, and how they see themselves.
Zoom in on the details that matter. Skip the clichés. Let each description carry weight, story, and emotion. Because you’re not building paper dolls. You’re building people.
