doctor who canon is easy. It's true if I like it
OR if it's really funny
and what if I told you nine was less afraid of love than ten. what then.
pride month tomorrow and they killed ncuti gatwa
This entire era was just rtd doing nostalgia bait for his previous era without actually bothering with a proper plot. Bringing back legacy characters can absolutely be done well and has been in the past, but here is really just felt like it was overshadowing the doctor. And I’m sure 15 will get overshadowed by a lot of fans because rtd had tennant before him and Billie piper after him. Both are good actors who played well liked characters, but they aren’t the entire show, they are not more important to doctor who canon than everyone else. Can’t we just take the time to appreciate a new actor who was delightful in the role of the doctor
Not to mention the racism of it all, rtd has a track record of sidelining his characters of color, and unsurprisingly he did it this time too. Ncuti was the first black doctor and him and Belinda were the first fully nonwhite tardis team, and yet we had so many doctor lite stories and Belinda’s characterization was basically forgotten in favor of focusing on the white companion from last season
stupid use of omega, INSANE underuse of the rani, not enough mel, not a single plot thread tied up properly, random changing of belinda’s past with NO EXPLANATION………………
when 13 appeared and 15's immediate thought was "wow it's not david tennant, didn't see that one coming"... that was funny
so we had:
an indian woman talking to another indian women about blood purity
the indian rani being a dictator and then getting killed for no reason while the white rani survives
the indian companion being randomly shoved into the role of mother and then getting sidelined in favour of the white companion from the previous series
the black, openly queer doctor regenerating into a white woman from a previous series
russell t davies back to his old tricks i see
Fuckin insane (derogatory) move to pull with Belinda. Rewrite time so she has a child and sideline her by quite literally putting her in a box much of the episode, then have that child Vanish and her forget it, then give her the child back by changing reality AGAIN so that she's always had said child and act like this is a win? Woman Gets Happy Ending With Child played entirely straight as far as I can tell??
I don't really have the headspace or energy to do a proper rant but changing Belinda from a like strong willed person who wants to go home and not travel with the doctor by choice, into A Mother Who Wants To Return To Her Child is such fucking bullshit.
RAH FUCKING THIS
also shitposting aside it should've been a horror movie. belinda chandra should've looked down at that child and known she would've died for her. she would've killed for her. and known also that those aren't her feelings. this isn't her child. fifteen wanted this dream so badly that he rewrote belinda's whole life. this ending isn't just a tragedy for the doctor
The first queer Black man to play the Doctor, a generational once in a lifetime casting, representing Black fans especially queer Black fans across the diaspora to be written out like that for his favourite blonde from 2005 is one of the foulest things Russell T Davies has done.
doctor who did so wrong by ncuti and varada. this whole thing revolved around RUBY being the catalyst. belinda's arc was so haphazardly put together- they basically made her a ruby substitute, gave her a story arc that made no sense & then gave ruby so much of her screentime this season.
and 15 was never given the time to come into his own, develop, or face other classic villains. he started with a previous doctor and ended with a previous doctor. they never let him just....be.
they both deserved SO MUCH better than this
In all seriousness, can we give this gorgeous, talented man the appreciation he deserves - what an absolutely fantastic portrayal he gave us, Ncuti Gatwa you will always be famous ❤️
ncuti gatwa i’m so so sorry, first your entrance was overshadowed by david tennant and now your exit was overshadowed by billie piper
It’s official!
anyone else, regardless of the billie piper of it all, really fucking upset that ncuti gatwa isn't the doctor anymore
he was SUCH a good one. SO good. we had nowhere NEAR enough time with him with two short ass series.
WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT ENDING
