that reminds me that i recently was rereading baptism of fire, and i realized that the first time geralt calls regis by his first name without title or honorific is in his hut…
but regis doesn’t drop the titles so soon, and the first time that he calls geralt by his name, without calling him mister (pan) or witcher, is when he has appeared to him and dandelion in the partisan camp
only when he appears to them here, which he knew would make geralt know, and would push them apart (and indeed geralt suggests that they should never meet again… well, we’ll see about that)
but it’s kind of interesting… the first time he addresses him with familiarity is when he’s revealed the part of himself which geralt was guaranteed to loathe
of course i think regis is very polite just in general, in the way he speaks and acts… but it’s endearing how the more familiar to geralt he gets, the less “polite” he gets. like mocking him and teasing him…
It's also funny beacause when it comes to Polish language, calling somebody by their name (first name, surname) straight away OR without, let's just say - 'consent' is very rude! So everytime I see Geralt change from 'Master Regis' (which is the most proper adress, beacause it uses his "surname") to 'Regis' is always very funny to me. Geralt is fed up with the bat.
I've always wondered why no one calls him Emiel? At first he's called Emiel Regis or Master Regis by everyone including the author, but then Jaskier calls him Regis in the middle of their little party, and that's that. No more Emiel for us ever 🥺
I just realised that we probably know Cahir's rank in the Nilfgaardian army. He calls Morteisen by his last name in their famous two line exchange, which means they were probably the same rank. If Morteisen had been Cahir's superior, he would've likely called him "captain" because that would be his usual everyday address.
And we know Morteisen is a captain because he's Sievers's equal, given that they're both placed at the head of similar army units. Sievers's rank is given to us at the Battle of Brenna, but I suppose he was captain half a year back too because his and Morteisen's group each comprises four squadrons, and anyone more junior than a captain wouldn't be qualified to lead those.
That said, Cahir's career, of course, stopped right when the First Northern war broke out - he was too busy being imprisoned, while Morteisen probably got a promotion or two. Thus, Cahir's rank is likely lower, but he's still an officer. There are three officer's ranks below captain in the Polish military, and they are all close to the rank of lieutenant (like, second lieutenant, lieutenant, and first lieutenant). Overall, calling him a lieutenant seems to be the most correct way.
Finally, I believe Cahir also served in the 7th Daerlanian cavalry division. Not only he knows Morteisen from there, but he also says to Milva "That's one of ours, a Daerlanian" when she steps on a corpse in the river. He could, of course, just be referring to the soldier being a Nilfgaardian rather than a Northerner, but it all adds up. Also, we know that Cahir used to have a splendid black stallion that even made Emhyr envious, so it makes extra sense for him to serve in the cavalry.
I seem to be having a bit of a writer's block, so I feel like reflecting a little on my road so far, especially since a few days ago it's been a year since my first Witcher fic.
My ao3 stats say that I have 234k words posted in total (apparently, it counts Ysgith as a whole, so 220k in fact), of which 66k is this year. Is it a lot? Probably not, compared to some other, more talented people, but it certainly is for me. A year ago I could never imagine that writing would become such a huge part of my life, and that this little community would become so dear to me. And for that, of course, I'm immensely grateful.
There are quite a few fics that I'm really proud of, and a couple that I prefer not to re-read 😅 Some (a lot actually) were born in a wild bout of inspiration, while others took some patience and discipline to finish. Both is fine, I guess.
I've had fanarts made for my fics, and let me tell you, there are very few occasions I can recall in my entire life that made me feel a similar level of euphoria. Having an insanely talented artist for a friend really helps 🥰 and, of course, can't forget the many, many lovely comments I've received for my works.
My writing style is now quite different, I think - or, on a second thought, maybe not so much. I tend to lean towards darker, deeper psychological things, where fantasy is just the background; however, given that the second fic I've ever written was already focused on depression and other mental illnesses...
There are still lots of genres and styles I haven't tried; as soon as I overcome the block, I'd like to write a horror story, at least a small one. I really want to post the gothic Yengefortz romance, even though it needs some improvements. There are still two Cahir stories from my new year resolutions to be written. And, hopefully, another major project that has been on my mind for a while.
Alright, apparently I have the writer's block for fanfics but not for rambling on this blog 😄 Need to come up with a name for the blog btw. You could probably tell from the titles of my stories that naming is certainly not my main strength 😂 but at least I seem to be getting better at tagging, a year ago I had no freaking idea whatsoever how that works.
Again, my inbox is bursting with hundreds of requests to finally post the review of The Brothers Karamazov, so here it is!
#7: The Brothers Karamazov - 4/5
As I said earlier, this is some peak, and while it's of course a masterpiece, one of the top books ever written, etc etc, it's also very obviously the peak of Dostoevsky's writing. It comprises and summarises everything he's written before, so I believe the only logical way is to read this novel after the others - Crime and Punishment, Idiot, Humiliated and Insulted, and maybe some more, so that you could familiarize yourself with some of Dostoevsky's favorite topics, such as:
whether a crime can be justified if the victim is an asshole;
who deserves to be a father and whether having children is sufficient to be called one;
how good it feels to assert domination through suffering and self-sacrifice,
and, of course, how a woman can ruin multiple lives just by existing in her own space.
That said, one should brace oneself for the first half, where hardly anything goes on. However, once the murder happens, things get a lot livelier!
Characterisation has always been Dostoevsky's main strength, so lots of very nice characters here. Let me introduce them with some random quotes, both their own and not.
Dmitry Karamazov: "And to think, only to think that a man's life should be ruined for the sake of that paltry three thousand!"
(Just for the reference, 3000 rubles is about 100k usd today)
Ivan Karamazov: "Well, Alyosha, it's sometimes very unwise to be a Russian at all, but anything stupider than the way Russian boys spend their time one can hardly imagine. But there's one Russian boy called Alyosha I am awfully fond of."
(Ivan doesn't know anything for sure in his life except that he loves his brother 🥹)
Alexey Karamazov: "Though I haven't had time to think about it, I believe I couldn't find a better wife than you, and Father Zossima tells me I must marry..."
(Alexey nailing that marriage proposal - and social interactions in general)
Fyodor Karamazov: "Would you believe it, he told me three weeks ago? You don't suppose he too came to murder me, do you? He must have had some object in coming."
(If everyone who wants to stab Fyodor did it, he'd probably be the modern era Julius Ceasar)

(Homegirl is literally making everyone miserable by trying to make them happy)
Grushenka: "And now after four years the sensitive, injured and pathetic little orphan had become a plump, rosy beauty of the Russian type, a woman of bold and determined character, proud and insolent. She had a good head for business, was acquisitive, saving and careful, and by fair means or foul had succeeded, it was said, in amassing a little fortune."
(A little fortune: the only glow-up that matters)
Smerdyakov: "You think that every one is as great a coward as yourself?" "Forgive me, I thought you were like me."

The court scene is pure delight and probably the reason they have first aid rooms in theaters 🤌👩🍳 Make sure you have some nails to bite and take care not to topple from the edge of the chair!
To sum it up, is it lengthy? Yes. Is it hard to read? Also yes. Did I almost dnf it? Right.
But let me tell you, that build-up pays off tenfold in the end. I only wish Dostoevsky had the time to develop this into a trilogy as he wanted to. Would've been the best goddamn trilogy ever written.

This is the first of the three major Cahir fics I have planned for this year, and probably my peak writing in terms of sex scenes 😂
Nothing screams sexy like open and proud acceptance of one's own sexuality. A person who's completely in tune with what they want is an instant turn-on. Shall we call it "self-awareness kink"?
Unpopular opinion: there's no bigger turn-off than a creator publicly complaining about the quality or quantity of the feedback they receive (and not in a way of joking). I get it, creativity literally thrives on feedback, we all want as much of it as possible, and no amount is ever enough. Still, I've seen the pattern more than once, and each and every time it completely takes away my desire to leave any feedback whatsoever. I agree that in the current era humility is probably not exactly what's going to get you through life... but we're here writing and reading fanfic, for god's sake. It's supposed to let us escape from responsibilities, not add more of them on top.
