veronica was so used to being loved in such a toxic way that when jd died she questioned if he even loved her at all, or if she was capable of it anymore, because she wasn’t capable in her mind of remaining seventeen (“if we’ve still got the right”) and it was so intense that the word love kind of scares her after jd dies. love is associated with his grandiose mission and depending on how the canon goes jd is still there (in the form of a ghost) and still loving her in that same way. the concept of affection hurts her because she’s scared of misjudging the person again upon first meeting and landing herself in a similar situation, because despite everything she is still an optimist and still sees the best in people. and she’s horrified that might work against her again so that’s why she laughs off feelings of affection; because she’s horrified of its implications post-events. love is a hard word for veronica to grasp.
